Pay attention to copyright
Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content.

We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules.

In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files.

Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions.

Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Assigning genders to writers and artists[edit]

Hello, I see that you have been assigning gendered categories to writers and artists who were previously listed in ungendered categories. It seems to me that this could possibly offend the people concerned, since gender is a very emotionally charged issue. Is doing this something that you decided to do by yourself, or was it a decision that resulted from discussion with other editors? Could you please let me know of any pages where it was discussed. Sincerely, Nadiatalent (talk) 08:13, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for responding. It does seem to be a matter that is handled individually by different editors. There is some discussion at Commons talk:Category scheme People, including one person saying that they think splitting categories into 2 is undesirable. Perhaps there will be a policy decision about this some day, but I can't see one now ... Nadiatalent (talk) 09:39, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in Round 1 of the 2022 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2022.

Round 2 will end at UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Tardis Wiki[edit]

Hi there Tangerine,

Sorry for having to contact you this way, but Fandom has certain rules that made it impossible to inform you on wiki. Just wanted to let you know that Tardis Wiki has moved to a new host, https://tardis.wiki, due to Fandom's introduction of more and more intrusive ads and involuntary features, which have made the site inaccessible to most of our readers. The majority of our regular editors seem to have moved over, but we're still hoping to see you, one of the most senior admins there.

Best wishes, Aquanafrahudy (talk) 12:06, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm certainly feeling your absence, TD, since there aren't too many of the "old guard" still kicking around in general.
Hope all is well, in any case. So you know, the door is always open.
