Hi!

I saw you removed Category:Skylines of Seattle from a bunch of files. When you removed that category were you aware of the steps I took to initiate a discussion over renaming Category:Seattle skylines to Category:Skylines of Seattle?

If so, was there a reason why you didn't weigh in with an opinion as to why that renaming shouldn't take place?

Some of my correspondents can be really unpleasant with demands that categories be renamed, in order to "be consistent with other cats". Most cities have a Category:Skylines of Foo or a Category:Skyline of Foo not a Category:Foo skylines. I don't care which name we choose as the parent name, so long as the other name redirects to the basename. I had to waste time searching for the right category name.

The {{Move}} template I chose sounds like it is the simplest way to initiate a renaming, that preserves the original revision history in the right place.

If you didn't have any actual objections to the name itself, and your only objection was that they were red-links, can I assume you have no objection to restoring that category? Alternately, if you do have an objection, could you state it at Category talk:Seattle skylines? Geo Swan (talk) 11:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

MLS[edit]

Hello there. You wrote on my talk page saying that File:MLS logo (2014).png is up for deletion as you have uploaded a vector version found in this PDF. I have no objections to the deletion, though I ask a small favour: could you also upload the LAFC, Atlanta 2017 and MLS 20th season emblems on the same PDF too? Capitol Hill Station & permissions[edit]

You recently updated a bunch of photos such as File:Photo by Don Wilson Capitol Hill Station 2016 (25161940723).jpg that say in their description "To request permission to use this photo, contact Darrius Wells at Darrius.wells@soundtransit.org or 206.689.3381". That seems to sit oddly with a CC-By-2.0 license, though I guess it could relate to using the image in manners incompatible with that license. Still, it seems like putting these on Commons may go against the photographer's (ill-expressed) intent. Can you follow up on this (probably make the contact)? @Jmabel: Looks like an error on my part (in letting the automated tool run pretty much unimpeded) and on Sound Transit's (if they indeed did not want these images CC-BY-2.0). Not all of the photos on the Special Collections account are licensed as CC-BY-2.0 (quite a few non-commercial and All rights reserved licenses), so it may be intended as open use. I've notified the listed e-mail offering guidance. (Though I really hope we can keep a few of the photos, especially the portraits and construction pictures; most everything else is replaceable). Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Sounder commuter rail categorization[edit]

Just a heads up: I've created Category:Sounder commuter rail trains, as I've been doing for several other commuter rail systems (MBTA and VRE among them). All images of Sounder trains in revenue service should be categorized in there (as well as the appropriate rolling stock and station categories). This allows one-stop shopping for images of Sounder trains, but keeps Category:Sounder commuter rail as an uncrowded top-level category. Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,400 people (the most of any nation this year) contribute over 8,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate pages on various Wikimedia projects.

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States! These photos are recognized for their photographic quality, artistic merit, and their encyclopedic value as illustrations of unique historical sites. We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret only being able to formally recognize the top 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. Hello! Last year you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States. Thanks to people like you it was a great success, with over 1,400 people contributing over 8,000 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information. The event runs similar to last year with some small but exciting changes: improved state guides, an interactive map, and a larger prize pool! Like last year, you'll be able to upload your photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

Help requested[edit]

As you know, I'm constantly diffusing the thousands of images dumped into Category:Seattle. Right now there are at least 50, probably 100, transit-related images in there (among many others).   • Thanks. No such script as far as I know, and they are not recently uploaded: someone just slapped Category:Seattle on a ton of stuff, much of which I'm finding is not even in city limits. It will be pretty obvious which photos are in question because this will be a large percentage of the color photographs in that category: the bulk of the category is century-old black-and-white photos that I'm carefully working through, often making a lot of corrections to descriptions. - Jmabel ! talk 21:39, 25 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've knocked a couple of hundred photos from Category:Seattle in the last day or so. From what I've now seen, I'd guess that there are actually over 100 that are transit-related in what remains, it depends how broadly you define transit. - Jmabel ! talk 05:13, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Jmabel: I see that they are all from a single Flickr account, which was previously raided for photos by transit-knowledgeable users.     • Well that's a pity. A good number of the other uploads were not from the Atomic Taco account. (Plus there were a bunch of quite worthwhile photos from that account on other topics.) Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. @Bluefriedragon09: Follow the steps at Commons:Licensing. Do not upload something that you did not create yourself or are not certain meets the free licensing requirements. State history museum & Union Station in Tacoma[edit]

Logos associated with bus transport in Canada revert[edit]

2 things

1. I'm kind of in the middle of transferring images in the vague "associated" categories to more specific ones. In this case the logos "associated with bus transport" are really for public transport companies that utilize buses as the method of transport. They aren't "associated with" bus transport though. Otherwise I'd be interested to know what companies are "associated with" bus transport but aren't just transport companies that use buses. I think the fact that all the logos you added to the category are for exactly that shows there aren't any companies "associated with" bus transport, just ones that are bus transport companies. So if that's the case just create a category for that instead of making one with the useless word "associated with" when the images files being put in the category aren't actually "associated with" bus transport.

2. If you look at the origin category for this one Category:Logos by association the parent category is Category:Categories by association which is a part of Category:Clubs and societies. So the category scheme is suppose to be for "clubs and societies" of which associations are an off-shot of, but obviously transport companies aren't. The point in the category scheme isn't to be a general dump for things that are slighted related to each other though. It's for a specific type of organization that is an off-shot of clubs or societies. So there can be a lot of potential images for the category, but the category structure in general is still not for logos of normal companies that aren't clubs or societies. Let alone logos of things that are just "associated with" each other conceptually but aren't either one of those. You'd have to agree that a transport company isn't a club or society. So there's zero to have the category regardless of it's potential. And personally I could really care less what "potential" it has, I care if the category makes sense and follows the purpose of the category structure in the first place, which this one clearly doesn't. So I'd appreciate it if you reverted your edit and created a more descriptive category for logos of bus transport companies. Maybe Category:Logos of bus transport companies. New map request for the metropolitan Seattle Link light rail[edit]

Hello.

Can you create a whole geographical network map for the metropolitan Seattle Link light rail? There is none in Wikimedia Commons and which needs to exist for the Link light rail articles across Wikipedia. Can you use your detailed map of Line 2 File:East Link map with stations.png, as the basis for the new expanded map and fuse it with File:Link light rail, route map.png? Line 2 is scheduled to open in 2024 (or 2025) and Line 1 is also scheduled to expand in 2024 (or 2025). The lines that are under construction, should be shown dashed, and should be able to be edited on, when they open to service. Actually, a comprehensive network map is required in Wikimedia Commons and for the Wikipedia articles about them, and not just for individual lines.

@Multituberculata: The interactive map works best for a system that will be undergoing many changes in a short period of time. I do not have time to create a complicated SVG map of the system, and there are others who are better suited to that work.
