Hello, SimsContPics!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

It'll be all fine[edit]

Hey my friend,

Do not worry about the alternative versions of your Mandelbrot zoom getting featured. It is clear that all reviewers are quite enthusiatically supporting the animation, and as 99of9 says, there are already plenty of support votes, so in the end one version will get featured. If it turns out to be the higher res alternative (odds are it will be the original that get feautured in the end), just be cool about it. Then each version will be featured, one on WP and one on Commons! And if it does i just think you need to accept that it is the will of the majority of Commons FPC reviewers. I realise all this business with the different featured picture programs, alternative versions, etc. is confusing. Personally I had rather seen we had just one high-activity Wikimedia project for featuring Wikimedia project images (on Commons of course ;-) ), but that is not the wish of tlocal he Wikipedias unfortunately....

By the way, I had a look at the game of Life, where I believe you contributed an interesting animation. After seeing the animations and showing it to my nine years old daughter we had a fun evening playing this zero-player game on a piece of squared line paper. These animations are really great at engaging new groups of people who would otherwise not get stuff like cellular automata under their skin at ages below ten! Thanks for making such educationally interesting and valuable animations!

I downloaded Golly yesterday, and played around with it. It is really a handy tool for Game of life. Kids got interested and played around with it for a while. They found it fascinating to play around with.
Ps. You might want to stove some of your examples on your user page(s) (espicially the en one) onto subpages as they require quite some resources to show. You can have a look at my user page to see how it can be done. I clicked in on your en user page today to have a look at some of your fascinating animations, but it was so resourcedemanding that my 2-3 y old laptop froze completely. After 7 minutes I gave up and rebooted the PC. --Slaunger (talk) 23:36, 5 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

FP promotion[edit]

Hi Simpsons Contributor,

This thing landed on my talk page:

but it really belongs here as you have done all the hard work making this nice Mandelbrot set zoom.

I'm afraid the Secret Life of Chaos has not been shown on Danish television yet, or maybe I just never noticed as I rarely watch television. So, it will be interesting to see what you can come up with using the arbitrary precision floats. Keep them processor cores glowing. Good for keeping a house warm in this freezing winter (Snow that fell in December is still lying in Denmark). --Slaunger (talk) 18:38, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
