First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Ciao Simon Praud. In italia non esiste la it:Libertà di panorama, perciò l'immagine Image:Palazzo dell'INA(Giuseppe Samonà)14.jpg è (assurdamente) una violazione di copyright (giuseppe samonà, infatti, è morto da meno di 70 anni). --Lucas 04:07, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Categories and gallerys[edit]

It would be interesting for me to read where there was a consensus to use categorys as gallerys. There is one that both systems are allowed and that both systems are equally valid. But in this case somebody took a category and made a gallery out of it and that mix of technical solutions definitely was never talked about. If you want a gallery with all palaces of Messina than make a gallery and put it in the category. But please don't take a category and use it as gallery. -- Cecil 07:15, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Categorie e gallerie[edit]

Caro Simon Praud, vorrei discutere con te del lavoro che stai facendo con Messina. E' molto valido, e noi abbiamo molto bisogno di persone coe te che amano la storia e l'arte della loro città per mostrarle con competenza e passione a tutti, ma il problema è che tu stai facendo una enorme confusione - anzi, francamente, dei veri e propri pasticci - fra gallerie e categorie e pagine.

Prendiamo questa pagina: Messina Ritratto di Antonina Cardia (Giuseppe Buceti). Ti sei preso la pena di fare di una singola immagine una galleria, quando le gallerie servono a raccogliere in un ordine scelto dal curatore una serie di immagini. Una galleria di una sola immagine non ha senso. Infatti, per darle un senso, tu hai fatto l'immagine grande come la pagina, il che daccapo non ha senso, dato che il posto in cui la foto deve andare grande è semmai la pagina, non la galleria, ovverossia questa: Image:Messina Ritratto di Antonina Cardia(Giuseppe Buceti).jpg.

Dopodiché, da altre parti ho trovato delle categorie usate come gallerie, allora a questo punto, scusa, il caos è totale. Ti chiedo di usare come gli altri le gallerie per le liste di piccole immagini, le categorie per gli insiemi di immagini, e le pagine singole per inserire singole foto in grandi dimensioni. In questo ultimo spazio ti chiedo di categorizzare meglio l'opera da te pubblicata, inserendo tutti i dati necessari, ovviamente se in tuo possesso.

Se pubblichi un ritratto, inserisci una categoria con l'autore del ritratto e il nome della persona ritratta, esempio [[Category:Giuseppe Buceti]] e [[Category:Antonina Cardia]]. Se conosci la data del ritratto, inserisci la categoria con la data, esempio: [Category:1763]].

Quando indichi la fonte, fallo in modo comprensibile. Scrivere "Accascina" probabilmente per te significa molto, ma per noi che siamo più ignoranti di te non significa nulla. Ricordati che le enciclopedie servono a spiegare a chi NON sa.

Sappi che tutti i pasticci che hai fatto con gallerie e categorie andranno smantellati e risistemati, il che implica doppio lavoro inutile: per te, e per chi deve rifare il lavoro. Per favore, discutiamone: non fa piacere a nessuno vedersi disfato il lavoro, tanto vale quindi farlo da subito nel modo standard. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
