Hello, Shoulder-synth!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Sorry. I categorized it when I uploaded, but I forgot to remove Uncategorized tag auto-generated by tool :( --Shoulder-synth (talk) 06:50, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It has been found that Image:Rudolph Wurlitzer label.jpg has a deprecated license tag. Please choose a new free license tag which describes the rights of the image correctly otherwise it will be deleted! Thanks for your consideration. Thanks, Filnik. I've already corrected it on 06:46, 23 July 2009. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 07:11, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Upload under wrong name[edit]

For files you uploaded yourself under a wrong name, misspelled, wrong identification, what ever, please reupload the file under the correct name and place newname.jpg on the depreciated, badnamed duplicate.

Please also pay attention to categorization, always select the most specific category and not COM:OVERCAT your uploads. Happy editing, --Martin H. (talk) 14:17, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your advices ! I'll try to use newname.jpg, and also I'll care to avoid COM:OVERCAT. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 15:23, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Hiroyuki_Ito_(Hatsune_Miku_Night,_Sapporo_2008-10-12).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Sorry - late night editing. I didn't see the flickr link originally. You are fine. Have a nice evening. --Admrboltz (talk) 06:59, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your responce! --Shoulder-synth (talk) 07:04, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop adding long decriptions, it's really not needed here. Wikimedia Commons is not an encyclopedia, but free media repository. Thanks. Herr Kriss (talk) 21:20, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to change Commons rules, then ask in Commons:Village pump. We really don't need long descriptions, cause everyone can click on the link to english Wikipedia and read the full article. Herr Kriss (talk) 18:21, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Herr Kriss.

You said less descriptive pages are rule of commons, but there is no such rule on commons. Why do you think so ? Please describe me. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 05:44, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to intrude here. First I must say that I am extremely impressed by the accomplished work of Shoulder-synth, and I don't say that lightly.
From COM:C: "The category name would be enough to guess the subject, but some extra text can be useful to precisely define it". Categories are in the first place instated to find categories, images and galleries. Obvioulsy, we don't need large chunks of texts to walk through categories. Moreover, if the texts are important, those chunks become problematic as for example in Category:Antillia where only a couple of the 200 or so languages are used. Moreover, we have the problem of text maintenance and evolution: on normal wikipedia's, that is their core business, on Commons, nobody really looks after it in a systematic way. Therefore, the interwiki's (on the left side of the screen) are the most handy/compact way and avoid replication of the same texts. Larger chunks of text, if they find no way on wikipedia's can be added through links on the category page that refer to galleries or the associated talk pages. Keep up the good work. --Foroa (talk) 07:02, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Performance Memoirs"[edit]

[1]: Category:Communication museums seems an odd choice. This was a performance in a store window, I don't see where a museum comes into it at all. But if it does, it should presumably be added to Category:Performance Memoirs (although I notice that now has a lot of quite unrelated images, and I'll follow up on that). - Jmabel ! talk 06:59, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Jmabel!
Thank you for your comment. In some point of view, you may be right.
BTW: According to the Deutsch article w:de:Museum für Kommunikation Bern, exhibitions on communication museums are categorized with two types. One is about human being itself, and the other is about technologies for communication.
Thus, I seek the photographs of "exhibition of interaction between human beings", and I found the image, File:Performance_Memoirs_04.jpg (it is not in store window, but in the showcase of art museum). Although the museum type is different, and theme of the photograph is "peformance", but this photograph exactly show the "communication between human beings". I think it is suitable for Category:Communication museums.
If you think my idea is odd, probably your opinion may be right. Please remove it from the category. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 07:30, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Jonny_does_Keith_Emerson_1.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
