A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:States of Zhou Dynasty.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Hey, I like your ancient Chinese states map a lot, I was wondering what period it is? Also, whether you have any intention of doing an even more detailed one sometime? When Western Zhou was founded, it was supposed to have had around a hundred principalities wasn't it? But I've never been able to find a map with close to that many. Interesting map. Do you happen to have a verifiable source that served as the basis for it? I would love it if you could add it to your file descriptions. --Cold Season (talk) 02:39, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Positioning of the Youxiong Tribe[edit]

Map

Based on which sources did you place the Youxiong Tribe on the map? --Nikke92 (talk) 08:39, 9 April 2018 (UTC)nikke92[reply]

Answer: This map was based on multiple sources. Youxiong was based on a map on a version of high school textbook in China. You can find a scanned version here: https://kknews.cc/zh-hk/history/gqkbnnm.html and a similar one: http://l.zhuixue.net/ditu/1597.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seasonsinthesun (talk • contribs) 19:03, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Maps and sources[edit]

Hello SeasonITS,

When drawing and publishing your maps on Commons, may I encourage you to collect and publish your sources as well. A beautiful map without sources will hardly stay long within Wikipedia's articles, and other cartographers cannot use the data (zonings) to draw better maps with it. Also, if you need a background for ancient China, be aware there is an high quality topographic background for this purpose. (The coastline may be corrected tho). Yug (talk) 14:34, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Yug. I will learn how to do it next time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seasonsinthesun (talk • contribs) 02:50, 28 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

References/sources to maps[edit]

Hi, I have removed a few of your self-created maps from Wikipedia articles.

I have requested for references that you've used to make these maps, but you have not provided references (preferably at the description page of the image files themselves). It is for the purpose to verify the information displayed on your self-created maps. --Cold Season (talk) 12:05, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Eight Thousanders Map.png[edit]

Hi, I've just added a comment to the talk page for this schematic page of yours: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Eight_Thousanders_Map.png.
I believe there's a slight issue with the location of Dhaulagiri (or possibly the labeling of Dhalagiri and Annapurna). Hope this helps. JA 1961 (talk) 14:07, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Where's Yang Zhu on this map?[edit]

I can't find Yang Zhu within this map, despite he's a philosopher around Zhou Dynasty that only owns his school Yangism. Also, where's Sun Bin on this map? I know Sun Tzu is there but he's different than him. I would like to add Pang Juan in there also. I'm sorry.--SMB99thx (talk) 05:16, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File:China Dynasties.gif requires updating[edit]

Hi Seasonsinthesun,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:China Dynasties.gif is out of date. Arunachal Pradesh just ain't under China (PRC) control my friends- you gotta change this map Could you update it? Thanks again. Geographyinitiative (talk) 00:39, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

幸安门 XING'AN[edit]

Hey- I think you missed a 隔音符号 on this map: File:Chang'an of Tang.jpg 幸安门 XING'AN GATE --Geographyinitiative (talk) 18:05, 23 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Seasonsinthesun,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Xi'an Incident Map.png is out of date. Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh uncertain to have been claimed by or actually under ROC rule- is this map about asserting modern day PRC claims or about the actual objective historical situation at the time of the incident? Part of northern Burma and eastern Tajikistan is/was claimed by the ROC, so maybe that should be part of the map. The phrasing "Kashag Local Government" is not neutral because it is not obvious that Tibet was not a fully independent state. Could you update it? Thanks again. 你好,关于File:Tumu Crisis.jpg的建议[edit]

在下注意到这幅地图中的蔚州,写作了“Weizhou”,但其读音实为“Yù zhōu”。

I noticed that 蔚州 in this map was spelled as Weizhou, but in fact it is read as Yù zhōu . -- Vikarna 10:19, 23 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New Map for Tang Dynasty[edit]

Hello Seasoninthesun, I hope all is well. I noticed that you make really good maps for Chinese history on Wikipedia, so I would like to ask you if you are willing to make a new map for the Tang dynasty article.

If you go to that article's talk page, you will see that an edit war has been running over the map in the infobox for quite a while. Basically, there is one camp (one guy really) who insist on using a map of the dynasty when it was much smaller than its greatest extent (it doesn't even show the Tang dynasty proper, but Wu Zhou). Obviously, intentionally not showing the greatest-extent map is a bit of a double standard, given how so many other maps on Wikipedia do show greatest extent (see how the Roman Empire article shows Mesopotamia under Roman control in 117, even though Rome lost control of Mesopotamia just one year later). Evidently, there may be ulterior (likely political) motivations behind these users' actions.

Anyways, the main issue here is that there is currently no good greatest-extent map of the Tang dynasty. The yellow map was used for some time (you can see it in the talk page), but it overstates Tang territory in the southwest. So it would be a really great help if you could produce a good-quality, accurate map of the Tang dynasty at its greatest extent. Please let me know if you want to move this discussion elsewhere. I am happy to help in any way I can. Thank you, and I wish you all the best. Ratata6789 (talk) 02:27, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ratata6789 -
Thanks for reaching out. I think I have made a similar one before: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tang_circuits_660.png
Do you think this map could be used directly on that page? Or do I need to make a new map showing such a boundary? Seasonsinthesun (talk) 14:40, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Seasoninthesun,
Thank you for the quick response! I think that map is pretty good, but I think if you made a new one with color, and less text, it would be better. Also, you should be careful and conservative in making the map, because if there is even a small inaccuracy, people will probably try to get it removed. For example, I noticed that the Andong protectorate is shown on the map you linked. However, the date at the bottom is 660-663, and if I'm not mistaken, the Andong protectorate wasn't established until 668. So that might be an inaccuracy that would need to be addressed.
I am happy to communicate with you and help with this. Ratata6789 (talk) 00:30, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see.
How about this one: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tang660.png
It's the year 660 when the Ungjin Commandery was established and the Western Turks were conquered. It should be the greatest extent although the Goguryeo territory has not yet been annexed. One year later the Persia would fall under nominal rule but I do not think it's wise to include that because it was never under solid control. If a later year were chosen (e.g. c. 670), the Goguryeo would be included, but the western frontier would shrink a lot because the Abbasid Empire would expand eastward and swallow up many nominal commanderies. Seasonsinthesun (talk) 04:35, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That looks really nice! Thank you for making it so quickly as well. Just to be safe, do you think you can make another version of it, with protectorates colored in a lighter shade (though still dark enough to be clearly visible)? Don't replace that map though, I think I will try to get it put on the article.
Again, thank you for doing this. Ratata6789 (talk) 19:12, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. Here it is: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tang660_core_and_frontier.png
The darker color indicates the core territory administrated by circuits, prefectures, and counties. The lighter color indicates the frontiers administrated by protectorates and commanderies. Seasonsinthesun (talk) 20:42, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, that looks very nice. At first I was confused by Vietnam (I thought it was a protectorate too) but then I checked and saw the Annan Protectorate wasn't established until 679. Hopefully we will be able to use this map, but I think we will face lots of resistance. Again, thank you so much for your work. Ratata6789 (talk) 00:55, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Seasonsinthesun,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Xi'an Incident Map.png is out of date. Taiwan under Japanese rule was not claimed by the ROC or the Communists in 1936 and should not be labeled on the map (cf. Korea under Japanese rule) Could you update it? Thanks again.
