Comments Pretty colors, and the composition pulls the viewer into the scene. Good exposure with some detail visible even in the bright white towel and in the shadows. I worry that a little too much noise reduction has been applied, as some of the surfaces look smoother than I think they should be, but I think that's not enough to block promotion. —David Eppstein 03:55, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I don't remember applying NR to this. Just in case I checked the original file and there is little detail in the coloured stucco. In fact the green towel has more detail than the stucco. I even looked at some files where I took pictures of the walls and the newer stucco they use is quite flat compared to what used to be on the homes. Much of Burano appears to have been "upgraded" in recent times. Saffron Blaze 09:31, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I guess the walls are just smooth. Nice picture, anyway. —David Eppstein 15:41, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Thanks. Just thought I would add that not all the walls are smooth as evidenced by the first house in the row. I also noted while there that the renovated homes use much brighter/saturated colours than the ones that are yet to be redone. I think it is more than a function of fading and quite a deliberate initiative to "brighten" up the area.Saffron Blaze 08:43, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

QIC comment[edit]

Hi! I've commented on one of your QIC pictures. It's a good image, but I think you can easily improve it. I'd appreciate a little rework! Thanks! Kadellar (talk) 14:18, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have checked the white balance and histogram and I am confident the lighting is correct. I do note the water and sky is partially polarised by the angle of the shot. Thus the colours are quite saturated. If you look at my wife you will see her blouse is white and suitably exposed for being sunlit by cold early morning light. However, when I have a moment I will upload an alternate version with the curves pushed to make it lighter. I will include it as another version in the original. Cheers. Saffron Blaze (talk) 19:43, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see the temple is correctly lit, but I still think the sky is dark. Next time please answer on other users' talk page, so the one questioning can notice if you have answered or not. Thank you. Kadellar (talk) 12:04, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, the sky is dark but it is first sunrise and the sky is polarised. This will always give the effect of a slightly darker sky. People use polariser filters to get this effect but it can be achived naturally by ensuring the sun is fully, but at least partially behind you, as it was in this case. If you prefer something a bit lighter there is this photo I took the same day but under different conditions and the processing was pushed: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sunrise_apollo_side.jpg
As to posting on other people's talk page I prefer to keep a conversation on one page. Otherwise it gets rather disjointed. I had understood this was a community norm.Saffron Blaze (talk) 13:01, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Hostile?[edit]

Do not worry. My English is too bad. I can understand your comment in my talk page, but I can not understand the comment in QI candidates. When I write, I write with a translator. In Spanish "hostile" is "hostil". When I wrote, in the translator, I don't wrote "hostil", but I don't remember the word that I wrote.

Is not worth arguing on an image (in this way) (to me). I'm thinking withdraw the image. Thanks--Miguel Bugallo 02:58, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Saffron. I ask to excuse me if I "corrections" have interfered with your creative process and was an irritation source. And my actions over your photo were simple: 1. To find a correct point for balance white (it should be the neutral, light gray point) - after that invisible color shades and a photo are shown before will look more accurate; 2. Accurately to adjust contrast by means of curves (! Not to use a marker "contrast"), probably it is necessary to work with masks. After that the photo will be even more accurate than process; 3. We raise sharpness with the help "Unsharp Mask". Corrected here such - the less details in a photo, the there should be a value "Radius" less (approximately from 0,3 to 0,7), further raise "Amount" to the necessary result, is possible to 80-120 - here it is necessary to experiment, as the general standards aren't present, the main thing that wasn't white auras round contours. In brief process looked so. I hope, it is useful to you in processing. --Aleks G 17:21, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Saffron Blaze

First, I would like to thank you for all your very interesting comments (and frequently, your supports) of my pictures in the QIC page.
It helps me a lot.
Regarding your nomination above, I have some comments.
The subject, the mood (the vicar ! Wonderful !), the light and the colors are very good and interesting, looking for me very "british", and better, very "english" I should say...
But there is a slight problem of overall sharpness.
In my opinion, you know that, because it seems that you tried to improve this by digital sharpening.
And...it is visible, the picture suffers of little sharpening halos between sky and architecture, especially at the top (see the crosses and the vane, for example), but not only (the battlements).
I'm afraid there is nothing to do, except rework the sky manually, pixel after pixel, but it is very tedious ! (I know that !)
Anyway, I hope your image will be promoted, because I do like it very much.
I hope this comment will be helpful.
Again, many thanks for all your kind supports, and for the nice pictures of your country I love (except this afternoon in "Stade de France") ;).
Sorry for my bad english, and greetings from Paris,--Jebulon (talk) 13:20, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The gilt ewer[edit]

Hi Saffron Blaze,

Another time, many thanks for careful review.
That is the problem with masking job... Let the truth as it is, or change it ? In this case, the metal was a bit "twisted" at some edges of the plate, probably due to age. Yes, I can "correct" this, I'll probably do it to avoid useless controversy, but I'll change the truth...

It is a better portrait[edit]

  • In my humble opinion, QI is about technology, not about artistic value (compared to FP or VI). This is why I think both Tumanov portraits have enough quiality. Your remark about «tired eyes» made me jump: he's a temporary acting mayor, moved into this position to solve the problem with city utilities. He has a huge reason to be tired, yes.--PereslavlFoto (talk) 10:05, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You make a good point about QI being more focused on technical aspects, but I think composition is still part of it. This portrait just stood out to me even in thumbnail because of its compositional elements. That aside, he sure does have that look about him that he has many responsibilities and issues to deal with so his eyes just add to that quality that makes the portrait just a little bit better in my opinion. With this said there is no reason that any of your recent portraits can't be QI. Cheers... Saffron Blaze (talk) 10:16, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I will have a look... perhaps add an annotaion of an approximate crop? Saffron Blaze (talk) 10:16, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, I like that one too. I recently had this same bird promoted from another perspective and people were commenting on all the Eagle FPs. I thought I'd give it some time before submitting another. Thanks for the compliment.
