Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

location[edit]

Please note that {{location dms|8|||S|140|42||W}} will not work, especially since longitude and latitude should have the same degree of precision (i.e. both only degrees, or both degrees and minutes). You can fill in the gaps with zeros so the templates works, such as {{Location|8|0|0|S|140|42|0|W}}. Cheers. --Qyd 17:48, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thanks and stuff[edit]

I just got a quick and useful handtyped lesson about the futility of upscaling vectorized maps from Sting. The reality of map scaling has not and probably will not interrupt the fun I had playing with the image. It was/is beautiful and I appreciate that it was here to play with like that.

I learned a lot and I was wondering about a few things. One of the things I was thinking about was how the original depth image was made. If it was made by filling areas and blurring those, perhaps inkscape could be used to make the same image and it would not be as big as a vectorized mapping of the same thing.

By far, the largest of the two vectorized image was the land relief. I uploaded them to my web site the depth map 1.4M and the relief map 5.8M, in case you are interested to see what I started with. Less than 24 hours later and I know that there is a bunch of things that I could have and should have done differently.

I mentioned elsewhere and it would be nice to get this message to the map project. I had to delete attributes that were thoughtfully set. One that comes to mind right now is inkscape layer names. I am not certain what is going on with the file upload dialog that I use, but it refused to save a file with a 'sodipodi:nodetype' attribute in it. I did not take a chance with my version of the Hawaii map and removed any attribute that contained the word sodipodi and inkscape before attempting to upload it. So, this is entirely from a user point of view, but it would be nice if the "id" attribute could be named instead of the inkscape attributes. Also, if this is a complaint, it is about the size of a drop compared to the ocean of beauty that your map is, so please understand that :)

That is a long thank you! Perhaps not too long. -- carol 21:27, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cistercian abbeys of Bourgogne-fr.svg[edit]

Keeling Curve graph[edit]

I saw recently that you converted the Keeling Curve graph into an SVG graphic. Thanks so much for doing this! I had a question though: Would it be possible for you to update the graph to reflect what the current Keeling Curve looks like (the existing one was a couple years out of date). The current curve for reference can be found here:

✓ Done Thanks ! I have updated it and all others SVG versions. Sémhur 14:51, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I did notice, however, that there appears to be a bit of line overlap on the right-hand side of the graph. I attempted to create a cleaned-up version but I'm afraid my SVG skills are lacking, so I reverted back to your version. It should be pretty easy to fix just by clipping the edges of the dashed grid object a bit and removing the extra line objects that were added to the top and bottom of the right hand side of the box (they don't seem to be necessary anyway). Hi! You uploaded a new version of the image and thanks for improving it. I have a few questions. First of all, how did you manage to remove the "black box" on it? What software did you use? I had no idea why it appeared, on Inkscape it worked well. Secondly, what do you mean by "decreasing weight"? –AnzeeTM 21:04, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, but now I have another problem. You see, this time I created a typeface sample. This is what happened:

Voir notamment Commons:Language policy#Name of files.

Hiva Oa[edit]

¡Hola![edit]

Bonjour Sémhur, votre carte de "Mexico_1835-1846_administrative_map" est merveilleuse!!.
.... peux tu faire plus????.... --Heraldicos (talk) 21:48, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm working on a geolocation\mapping project on hebrew wikipedia, and this image is better than the one we use so far (File:Mexico geoloc blank.svg). The only problem is that I need the geographic limits of this map and to know if it uses Equirectangular projection, or other projection. Thanks, GilCahana (talk) 18:39, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Another one is File:Algeria Wilayas-blank.svg. Do you know it's geographic limits? GilCahana (talk) 01:58, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bandeau AG[edit]
