Hello, Rprpr!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi, to the Dell logo PD-textlogo applies. Jcb (talk) 11:41, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you put some thought into this, since you made the two sensible choices that most uploaders miss:

 1. Producing the screenshot at a moderate resolution so that some detail can be seen in thumbnail view
 2. Including some open applications so as to get an idea of the look and feel of the thing (window borders, transparency, icon sets, native widgets), rather than reproducing the desktop background

So thanks for your good work. Samsara (talk) 15:27, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Debian 8.2 GNOME desktop.png seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

The reason given by the user who added this tag is: Missing copying permissions for screenshot software.

I've added Template:Free screenshot with Template:GPL and Template:MPL2. 80.221.159.67 14:52, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please clarify if these screenshots mentioned are really your own work (as in, your own software code) or only self-photographed (taking a screenshot of someone else's work)? I'm doubting the case is the latter, though you were claiming the work to be your own. 80.221.159.67 06:13, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

To clarify, in addition to giving a source for the screenshot elements themselves (e.g. Big Buck Bunny), you must also state the source of the screenshot. This could be your own work, self-photographed or an URL to an external resource. 80.221.159.67 06:31, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Debian 8.2 GNOME desktop.png. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk. The file you added will soon be deleted. If you believe this file is not a derivative work of a non-free work, please explain why on the file's talk page.

Please don't remove the notice of incompatible licenses unless you have resolved the issue by relicensing from CC BY-SA 4.0 to another license compatible with the GPLv2+. Specifically for this file, you must make sure that larger works combining works under MPL2 and GPLv2+ are available under the terms of MPL2 and GPLv2+. CC BY-SA 4.0 is not compatible with GPLv2+, and thus you can't choose it as your license. See Various Licenses and Comments about Them by the GNU Project, specifically § Mozilla Public License (MPL) version 2.0 and § Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 4.0 license 80.221.159.67 06:01, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Screenshot of Rotate Cube Compiz plugin on Ubuntu 12.04.png seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

The reason given by the user who added this tag is: The skydome / Milky Way image is not in public domain, as it was taken by European Southern Observatory (ESO).

You probably already also know this, but since ESO's copying conditions state CC BY-SA 4.0, you also can't choose to license your derivative screenshot under CC BY-SA 3.0 as those two licenses are incompatible. In addition, there's the remaining question about compatibility with GPL or similar. 80.221.159.67 06:54, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
