First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)

Image:Nationalparker_i_kenya.png[edit]

Hejsan! Jag sag din karta av Nationalparker i Kenya! Jattekul att du arbetar med att gora sadana, det ar mycket viktigt! Jag tankte dock foresla nagra forbattringar som skulle behova goras for att gora kartan annu battre. Kartan ser ut att vara gjord i ArcGis (om jag inte misstar mig?) och det borde darfor inte vara nagot problem om du har alla lager sparade. Det som jag tankte pa nar jag tittade pa den var foljande:

1. I teckenforklaringen sa har den grona rutan som star for "Nationalpark eller reservat" texten "Tsavo" i sig; detta bor tas bort da det ju inte star sa i alla de grona falten pa kartan utan bara ar ett namn for ett par av parkerna.
2. I teckenforklaringen star aven "Asfalterad huvudvag", jag kan dock inte se att det finns nagon sadan vag utsatt pa kartan. Beror det kanske pa att den ar lagd under de andra lagren?
3. Samma sak galler med "Annan vag". Men att jag inte ser nagon sadan kanske beror pa fargvalet? Jag skulle vilja foresla att en farg som skilljer sig mer fran okenfargen anvands. Kanske nagon nyans av rott?
4. I teckenforklaringen star "Flod med storre damm" utmarkt. Vad jag kan se sa finns det dock bara en, och den ar pa Panganifloden i Tanzania. Daremot saknas det info om att de bla strecken som ar utan dammar ocksa ar floder. Om inte dammen har paverkat Kenyas nationalparker pa ett direkt satt skulle jag ta bort det lagret och bara visa floderna (atminstone bor en forklaring om floderna laggas in i teckenforklaringen).

Hej Jopparna, tack för återkopplingen! Jag håller just på att försöka lära mig göra kartor, så jag är tacksam för alla tips. Mina Kenyakartor är gjorda i Inkscape, hela kartan finns här: Image:Kenya_allt_.svg. Jag hade helt glömt att ta bort saker ur teckenförklaringen som inte fanns med på nationalparkskartan, så jag återkommer med en ny version av den. //Rotsee2 (talk) 06:57, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Locator maps for Danish islands[edit]

Hi Rotsee and sorry to disturb you but at some point you made some locator maps for Danish islands such as [File:Denmark location laeso.svg this one]. I am currently trying to improve the articles on Danish islands together with user:Ipigott and your maps are really useful. Unfortunately there are only locator maps for the 16 largest islands (see this List of islands of Denmark for an easy overview) and neither of us have any idea how to make them. So I wondered if there might be a chance that you would consider making some more? If you don't want to bother with it&which I of course totally understand—it would also be much appreciated if you could tell me how you make them.

I do realize that the red becomes very small as the islands get smaller but at least for a few more (Fanø, Fur, Anholt and Saltholm maybe), I think it would still be adequately visible on the general Denmark locator map, and for the following ones I guess they could be maked on the regional locator maps]. Well sorry again for imposing on you like this but I really hope you can help. And thanks again for the maps that you have already made!Ramblersen (talk) 02:31, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I could defenitely do that if it helps, but I may not find the time for some while, so please be patient with me. If you want to try doing some vector graphics your self you can use e.g. the freely available editor Inkascape and start playing around. Rotsee (talk) 19:39, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It would be great if you would make some more when you eventually find the time and there is no hurry of course. The mere phrase 'vector graphics' make me suspect that my computer would explode on me if I had a go with it myself. So I think I will just continue fiddling with the less technical side of the articles and hope that some more of your great creations will in time show up. Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Rotsee,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Hello ! Thank you for making these Democratic Republic of the Congo location maps !

(There are now 26 provinces instead of 11 since 2015. You can see this link : [1]. The map in this link is correct but the province of Lulua (center of the map) has a new name : Kasaï-Central.)

Could you please modify the maps in SVG format like this one for the 26 provinces ?
