First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Macdonaldtown station[edit]

Hi J Bar, Just want to thanks for the photos you have up of the railways stations, i am doing my bit trying to fill the gaps and just want to say what a great job you have done. just one q, when you took the photos of macdonaldtown station, did you notice the old platforms 1 & 2? JROBBO mentions it here and was wondering do you know what he is talking about? Roadrunnerz45 03:52, 19 March 2008 (UTC) Thanks[reply]

G'Day Roadrunnerz
I saw no evidence of platforms 1 & 2. I'm sure they have been completely demolished. I do remember there was some construction work happening when I visited and parts of the station were boarded up. It might have been the stairs that JROBBO was talking about, behind some of those boards but that was a while ago now. Cheers. J Bar 04:20, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Delete your own images[edit]

You can't delete images or pages if you aren't an administrator :-) but if you want you can:

  • Ask me or ask another administrator to delete the images ;-)
  • Put the {{Speedy}} template on the image's description or in the page
  • Re-upload another image with the same name, this will replace the old image with the new one
  • Pray God (this usually doesn't work so well without doing any of the previous passages :P :-))

Need help with cats[edit]

Hi there again J Bar, wondering whether you can please help me with adding cats to this image of an island off the QLD coast i have uploaded to Commons. The relevant wikipedia article can be found here, any help you can give is appreciated. Cheers Roadrunnerz45 (talk) 03:35, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What do you need help with exactly? Do you need to know how to add categories or suggestions on categories that couuld be used? J Bar (talk) 04:20, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, i need some suggestions on what categories can be added to the picture. What are your suggestions? Thanks Roadrunnerz45 (talk) 08:17, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There don't seem to be that many categories set up for isaland photos. You've already used "Islands of Queensland". The only thing I could suggest is that you look for some photos from other Australian islands that you might know and see whether they have been linked to any other categories that you haven't thought of. Sorry I couldn't be any more help. J Bar (talk) 04:04, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
