Getting help

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.

On derivative works[edit]

Hello! Thanks for taking an interest in prehistoric mammals. I believe some of your image contributions, and placement of images, are problematic. First, and importantly, when you crop or extract part of an image that someone else owns the copyright to, as in the uploaded File:Pristerognathus extracted.png you don't automatically assume the copyright to the modified image, even if the image is free to use. The original work remains under copyright, no matter how much modification there is. I'm not even sure such modifications qualify as derivative works: you did not draw or paint the original, you simply cropped the background. I am not a lawyer, but since no new original content was added, there is nothing new to claim ownership or copyright on. Had you added wings or painted a new background to the image, then you would be author of only the new work. For more info, see Commons:Derivative works, as well as Copyright in Derivative Works and Compilations from the U.S. Copyright Office. Legal issues aside, I believe it is intellectually dishonest to claim authorship of an image you did not create. There are templates for clearly stating who made changes to a work, see for instance {{Retouched picture}}, {{Extracted from}}, or {{Derived from}}.

A different species?

Issues of authorship aside, and perhaps this is only my personal view, but I think it is questionable practice to duplicate existing reconstructions of a fossil animal, whether your own creation or others', make minimal changes in color, and claim that is a different extinct animal. This can mislead readers in thinking a species is more well-known than it really is, and can create confusion if the images get widely reprinted outside of Wikimedia. Case in point, the creator of File:Morganucodon.jpg (the original) presumably did some research into the proportions and existing fossil material on Morganucodon. Making several near duplicates with shortened tails and declaring they represent completely unrelated species (Therocephalians vs Cynodonts) may be contrary to Wikimedia's Educational Use policy, which excludes: "Files that add nothing educationally distinct to the collection of images we already hold covering the same subject". You might consider discussing your images at Paleoart review, or requesting more feedback at the WikiProject Palaeontology talk page. Cheers, -Animalparty (talk) 23:43, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons has a specific scope[edit]

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter.
