Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:HoraIsraeliDance.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. You wrote that I had not provided sufficient source or copyright information for this picture.

The picture already exists in the Hebrew version of the Wikipedia at

http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%AA%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%A0%D7%94:Horah.jpg

with the title Hora.jpg. All the source and copyright information is written there in Hebrew.

I copied a translation of the source and copyright information to my Commons copy (I would have linked directly to the picture in the Hebrew version, but couldn't figure out how to do it). Here is (approximately) what I wrote:

source: Scanned from the booklet "GalGal" (Tel Aviv, 1948).

Copyright: According to Israeli copyright law (section 21), "The period of copyright on photographic materials is 50 years from the creation of the negative..." Consequently, this picture is now in the public domain.

In spite of this, I find that the picture has been deleted for insufficient sourcing. What more is needed?

I think I now see the problem. I should have added the tag {{PD-Israel}}, and because I didn't do that, the picture was probably deleted automatically. Can I undelete it and add the tag? Or do you have to do that? Tnx,

Image deletion warning Image:FleeingCellist.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hello Ravpapa,

the following content you uploaded is not free and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

Image:Beethoven Ghost Trio First Movement.OGG

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be used for any purpose, including:

  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload works you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:21, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It has been found that Image:HaydnOpus 20 Title Page.jpg has "images.google.com" in its description. The images uploaded on Wikimedia Commons should always have a free license, explicitly given by the copyright holder. Hello Ravpapa!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 17:49, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:BeethovensPiano.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File:HaydnPlaying.jpg[edit]

Haydn

Do you remember where this picture is from? I am pretty confident that it is not pre-1790 (as indicated), since it looks rather like a late 19th/early 20th century painting. Also, there is no "Staatsmuseum" in Vienna. --AndreasPraefcke (talk) 18:25, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The picture is reproduced on the cover of Stowell, Robert, editor (2003). The Cambridge Companion to the String Quartet. Cambridge University Press. ISBN 0-521-80194-X. The citation is taken from there, though I have seen the picture elsewhere. But you are right that there is some confusion over the Staatsmuseum. Although I find numerous references to this museum on the web, I find no listing of it in a list of museums in Vienna. Perhaps the reference is to the Staatsopernmuseum, which is the museum of the opera house. As for the date, it is hard to tell. The composition, the use of light, and the treatment of detail suggests to me early romantic, in any case certainly not early 20th century. But I am no expert.
I tend to believe the reference in the book, as in every other respect the book is very accurate and thorough. But the only way to know for sure is to go to Vienna and hunt the painting down. --Ravpapa 21:44, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

Dear Ravpapa, thank you for your contribution of the Schubert "Death and the Maiden" quartet recordings. However, as you probably know, Wikimedia Commons can only host free content, i.e. content whose authors (including performers in case of musical composition) have themselves clearly allowed anyone else to freely use, redistribute, transform and build upon content they created, even commercially.

Unfortunately, I see no indication of such permission on the youtube page that this file and similar link to. If you have permission from the performers and the person who did the recording to publish their work under a free license at commons, please send it to commons OTRS volunteers as described at the Commons:OTRS page. Otherwise, you may need to negotiate such permission with the performers. YurB (talk) 12:41, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please see my post at the deletion request page. Thanks --Ravpapa 13:11, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
Göring in Farbe / Goering in color

Google translate: ;-)

Sorry for my German, but I speak very little English. But now to the point: Special Film Project 186 in 1945 shot entirely in color. The color state of screenshots is indeed bad but original. I've reverted your edit reason. Further information on the Special Film Project 186 can be found here: [4] [5] [6]

PS: Currently the thumbnails are not updated immediately. It's just a cache issue.

Kind regards
