Permission for file[edit]

Hey, got a question. You uploaded an image of the Bizzell Library a while ago (Image:Lightning over Bizzell Library.jpg). In the image description, it said you received an email from the photographer saying he released it under the GFDL. You wouldn't happen to still have that email would you? If so, I think it would be beneficial if you forwarded it to the OTRS group so we have it documented. I'd like to get the OU article featured and I could see that being an issue. Thanks.Nmajdan 02:40, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I noticed this image in the Sertraline article over on WP, and thought it was a little on the dark side. I did a bit of levels adjustment and uploaded a new version; do you mind if we use this one in the article? I won't mind if you prefer the earlier version—photo editing is pretty much beyond my expertise, so I'll defer to you on that one :) Best, Fvasconcellos 20:46, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I guess I'll upload over the original, and you can delete the new version—I didn't know you were an admin here. Best, Fvasconcellos 21:35, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr Review[edit]

Thanks for taking a closer look at this photo. I exchanged a few emails with the owner and I think I confused him about the whole OTRS thing, and he tried to release the GDFL through the comment section . So, thanks for taking a second look at that release. I was wondering if you would be so kind as to look at this other photo in the same situation from the same photographer: Image:Barack and Michelle Obama, Bob Casey, Teresa Heinz at Rally.jpg. Hello Ragesoss,

Please forward your reply asap/immediately to Hollmarsh1@aol.com..

I found your photo at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:The_Great_Fire_of_London%2C_with_Ludgate_and_Old_St._Paul%27s.JPG while doing photo research for a textbook publisher on a project. I thought your image might be appropriate for inclusion in a literature curriculum.

I aI am specifically seeking to confirm the if you took the photograph yourself of the artwork, or if not, who the photographer is and how I might reach that party. I work for a publisher who wishes to possibly publish it within them within the curriculum.

I look forward to hearing from you as quickly as possible; the publisher is eager to finalize images to be used.

Thank you, Holly Marshall

This is another Elliot & Fry image. I can find nothing stating that it has been released under a Creative Commons copyright licence. Whence did you obtain that information when you originally uploaded it to the English Wikipedia? Uncle G (talk) 17:12, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • The image was uploaded to Wikipedia by the artists with the title File:Rosalind Franklin.jpg; since that title was in use already on Commons, it was moved to commons as File:RosalindFranklin.jpg and the WP version was deleted. In the deleted edits on en-wiki and the deleted edits on commons, you'll find where (despite some confusion about what it meant, at first) she/they added the CC license. You can see the exchange I had with the uploader, User:SionBrown, at w:User talk:SionBrown and w:User_talk:Ragesoss/Archive3#Rosalind_Franklin_new_portrait.--ragesoss (talk) 01:57, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • By the way, I assume you don't mean Elliott & Fry, but what did you mean instead?--ragesoss (talk) 02:02, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Yes, I really did mean Elliott & Fry, which is (according to the NPG at any rate) the studio that took that photograph. Elliott & Fry certainly took some of the other photographs of Franklin. Even if the NPG is wrong, the image is not a work of the United States goverment. The United States government explicitly says so itself, saying that the image comes from the personal collection of Jenifer Glynn. Given that it was taken in 1956, it has certainly not yet entered into the public domain, whoever the photographer was. Uncle G (talk) 02:43, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      • Sorry, I was confused by the fact that there was another image (a painting) by the same name that I had dealt with, which has deleted revisions underneath the current file. I didn't upload that image from the the NIH website, Jacopo Werther did. It looks like that user just assumed that it was PD since it came from a government website. I have no reason to doubt the NPG if they say it's Elliott & Fry.--ragesoss (talk) 03:50, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      • The photo you link to at NIH that says it's from Jenifer Glynn is not the same photo. A link to the NPG source?--ragesoss (talk) 04:03, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      • I see two other Elliott and Fry photos on the NPG website, but not this one.--ragesoss (talk) 04:06, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
        • I hope you find a free source! (Just passing by. -SusanLesch (talk) 04:23, 15 July 2009 (UTC))[reply]
        • The NPG source is a deleted edit from the NPG's own IP address to the English Wikipedia's page for that file made in August 2005, that reads:

The copyright in this image belongs to the National Portrait Gallery, London. The information in the copyright box below is incorrect, and the image has not been released into the public domain.

There's also an edit by the NPG to w:en:Rosalind Franklin here.

Whether or not the image here is the same one as was here in August 2005, I'm inclined to believe that this is true of all such images of Franklin. They all have not been released to the public domain, and are still under copyright. The NIH says that it is using its image because it is in Glynn's personal collection, but it doesn't know the rights holder or the copyright status. It's reasonably apparent that the Commons image is from the same photographer at the same time, even if the subject is in a slightly different pose. Since the Commons image also came from the NIH, it's not unreasonable to think that that, too, is from Glynn's personal collection, and the NIH doesn't know the rights holder or the copyright status. If it knew for the one, it would reasonably know for the other. Uncle G (talk) 14:14, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Commonist licenses[edit]

Dear Ragesoss,

As you might know Wikimedia is currently migrating from the GFDL to cc-by-sa-3.0. Wikimedia Commons is also migrating and we're down to less than 8000 files (started with about 1,8M files) . Unfortunatly this number keeps growing because Commonist contains outdated license templates. You appear to be running Commonist, could you please change the following lines in your license.txt?

GFDL should be changed to GFDL
GFDL should be changed to GFDL
cc-by-sa-2.5 should be changed to cc-by-sa-3.0

Can I also fix the images you have already uploaded by adding ?

Thank you very much, Multichill (talk) 12:05, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why can't or hasn't the Commonist source be updated or forked? I usually run it by clicking the webstart link, so I don't have a license.txt file available when I use it. I'll try to download it and use it that way, but the problem really needs to be fixed with Commonist itself rather than trying to continually track down users who are using it.--ragesoss (talk) 12:57, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I contacted the author. If he doesn't respond I will fork it. I'm now notifying users to at least catch the most active users and fix recent uploads.
Back to my first question, can I fix the images you have already uploaded by adding ? Multichill (talk) 13:08, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course you can fix the images I've uploaded already. I installed Commonist locally and changed the license.txt file for future uploads.--ragesoss (talk) 19:37, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, great. I changed your recent uploads. Multichill (talk) 11:24, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incoming links[edit]

Hi. What did the data look like, that you started from? Did you have page names? The source tool you cite is broken. --Una Smith (talk) 22:42, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When User:JaGa's script was working, the data was two columns pairing number of incoming links with number of articles that have that number of incoming links, excluding incoming link numbers with no corresponding articles. The graph was based on just truncating the data to the first 50 data pairs; there were (according to my spreadsheet, which is a bit cryptic) over 4600 data pairs. JaGa also created a separate script that listed the articles (maybe 100 or 1000 of them) with the most incoming links. I don't have a copy of that.--ragesoss (talk) 01:31, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We were wondering if you own the copyright to this image as we would like to use it within our documentary for the rights for worldwide, all media and for perpetuity.

If you can email me at: ellie.davis@parthenonentertainment.com or call me on 01923 286 886 that would be great!

Hello, Ragesoss!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine[edit]

Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:23, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, once someone accepts a work under a given CC license, that license is irrevocable. Lame question[edit]

Hi Sage, I left you a message elsewhere but maybe you won't see it. I know it is totally lame, but is there any chance that you can untag me in that picture you uploaded from the Wikipedia training so that it won't be searchable on the Internet? I am not comfortable with it for several reasons. I know that it is really hypocritical of me to ask, since I am all for free and open everything, it's just that I am not really a public figure, just an ordinary non-notable person made personally uncomfortable by it. Let me know what you think. Saudade7 (talk) 23:27, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yep. I've deleted the picture. It's no problem; there's generally no problem with removing photos from Wikimedia gatherings that the subjects don't like. Sorry for the anxiety it caused.--ragesoss (talk) 23:50, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I really do appreciate it. I hope you are well! Matt and I met with our first class (Piracy) today. It was great. Probably not enough for an official report yet but fun. Sorry I am such a party pooper. I hope I get to hang out with you again at some point. More soon. Saudade7 (talk) 07:23, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Would like to use your blackberry photo.[edit]

I'd like to use a close up photo of blackberries you uploaded to Wikimedia, but I need to discuss with you how to handle the attribution. Please email me at greg(at) goldminemtn.com

Thanks!

Hi

We are writing a book on spices and herbs.

The title is “Krydderleksikon med urter og smakstilsetninger” (Encyclopedia of spices and herbs). Print run is 5000 copies and the book will be published in May this year. It will be illustrated with photos of all the plants.

Most of the photos are already provided for but we still miss some picture.

We have found your photo of Monosodium glutamate on the Internet and we wonder if you kindly will let us use the photo in our book.

Are you aware of Commons:Superseded images policy? It is generally controversial to delete a PNG that has been replaced with an SVG, rather than just mark the PNG as Superseded. --Tony Wills (talk) 02:46, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. In this case, the PNG was uploaded after the SVG, by the same user, and was explicitly marked as a temporary upload, and then marked as a duplicate by the uploader.--ragesoss (talk) 03:31, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Possible copyright issue[edit]

Hi Ragesoss, I am not sure if File:Krishna the cowherd.jpg passes as "own work". It surely contains clips from images belonging to International Society for Krishna Consciousness, and their images do have copyright. Can you please look? Also if there is some effective way of tagging such questionable images, can you please let me know? Thanks. Hoverfish (talk) 16:42, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well I was doing a quick check for other such images in Category:Krishna and this one: File:Krishna playing flute.jpg (also here File:Krishna with flute.png) caught my eye, which also seems to be a photo of an image of the above mentioned organization and it was uploaded by the same user as "Public Domain". Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

I did a quick post about it on the village pumps both here and on English Wikipedia, and I also shared it with the Signpost — hopefully it'll get a mention in the next issue. Feel free to bring it up other places you think it would be relevant. I've gotten some good feedback already in the last couple days and have some improvements planned, and I'd love to have it in front of more people and get their feedback as well.--ragesoss (talk) 16:35, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures from Pittsburgh museum[edit]

Hello.

I saw on the Commons website that you uploaded pictures from Pittsburgh museum, that's the reason why i send you this message.

I'm looking for pictures of the Nimatron, an automata built in 1940. The Nimatron (google translation) should be at the "Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science Building". Are you, in any way, able to go there and take some pictures of it and then upload them to the Commons website ?

I already asked this 2 times without answer here (Pittsburgh portal, village pump).

Archimëa: Sorry, I don't live in Pittsburgh any more.--ragesoss (talk) 16:20, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:The Shoppes at Northway - 1.jpeg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thank you, odder (talk) 02:17, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ragesoss,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Mouse pointing to the "My sandbox" link on Wikipedia.png is out of date. Could you update it? Thanks again. Daylen (talk) 05:01, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File:3rd Day - The Green Che.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Outreachy Round 15: Interested in becoming a mentor / featuring a project?[edit]

I'm contacting you, as your project is featured on the New Developers page! :) Would you be interested in mentoring a project in the Outreachy Round 15? If so, here is what you might be interested in learning about:

  1. Get an overview of the selection process, and your responsibilities before, during, and after the program
  2. Create a task, or modify an existing one on Phabricator. Make sure it includes: Project title, description (summary in 8-10 lines), skills required (Phabricator tags are welcome), mentors (required two), micro tasks (link to Phabricator task that must be completed to become a strong candidate).*
  3. Tag the task with #Outreach-Programs-Projects and #Outreachy-Round-15 on Phabricator.
