Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 06:13, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

File:EldridgeLovelace.jpg
[edit]Hi RVELovelace. You have edited on Commons in quite a long time, but perhaps you can clarify the en:provenance of File:EldridgeLovelace.jpg if you're still around. You uploaded this file as your "own work" under a public domain license, but I think you might be misunderstanding some important things about Commons:Licensing. Generally, "own work" means you actually took the photo yourself. Did you take this photo? If not, then you can't claim as your "own work" and you can't upload it to Commons without the COM:CONSENT of the person who did. Based on the Wikipedia article en:Eldridge Lovelace, this photo look as if it was taken when Lovelace was in his 50s or older which would be some time after 1963 or so. The photo also has a professional feel to it as if it was some an "official photograph" taken for some publication, etc. All of these things indicate that the photo might actually be still protected by copyright and that copyright would be held by whomever took the photo. If you can clarify this, please do; otherwise, I'm not sure whether Commons can keep the file as licensed and this would probably need to be resolved by a COM:DR discussion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:10, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
