Interwiki guidelines for Nynorsk Wikipedia[edit]

These are the guidelines used for interwiki-links at Nynorsk Wikipedia, roughly translated from nn:Wikipedia:Interwikilenkjer. If you are a robot, please take care to use a bot-flagged account.

  1. General instructions:
    1. Interwiki links should reside at the very bottom of each page (after category tags).
    2. Each interwiki link should reside on its own line.
    3. For appropriate display of interwiki language name here on nn:, nb: should be used in place of no:. (Please note that this is a local decision for nn: only — other wikipedias may have a different policy.)
    4. Interwiki links are sorted in two main sections: 1) skanwiki and 2) interwiki.
  2. Skanwiki instructions:
    1. An empty line and the comment tag <!-- skanwiki --> should prefix the skanwiki section.
    2. The skanwiki section should contain only the links to nb: (Norsk (bokmål), sv: (Svenska) and da: (Dansk), in that order.
  3. Interwiki instructions:
    1. An empty line and the comment tag <!-- interwiki --> should prefix the interwiki section.
    2. The interwiki section should contain links to all languages.
    3. The Scandinavian languages nb:, sv: and da: should nevertheless only be repeated in the interwiki section when total number of languages equals or exceeds seven.
    4. The interwiki section should be organised alphabetically by displayed language name (not by language code). (Example: fi: is alphabetised as "Suomi".)

See nn:Wikipedia:Interwikilenkjer#Organisering av interwikispråklenkjer for example organisation.

Thank you very much. In my opinion, these rules are a bit too complex. However, I will bear them in mind. At the moment, I do not plan to place any interwiki-links in any wikipedia other than the Commons.

The enforcement of these rules is in my opinion an optimal task for a bot (not me) which could examine recently changed articles etc. and reformat the interwiki-links as described. Yours, RCBot 14:42, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Bot on Serbian Wikipedia[edit]

Hi i would like to know what will this bot do for serbian wikipedia? You can answer me to user talk pages on: en:User:Sasa Stefanovic or sr:Корисник Саша.Стефановић. Best regards Saša Stefanović

Hello Saša,
sr:Корисник:RCBot is a bot currently being in development. Its purpose is to help with issues on the Wikipedia Commons. There is only one task that the bot is supposed to do at the moment: help renaming media files on the commons.
Suppose there were two identical files (e.g. images) on the Commons that might even have been uploaded from different language Wikipedias. But media files on the Commons can be used in any language Wikipedia, for example in the Serbian WIkipedia, and so all languages need to be checked and – if necessary – the reference to the first file replaced by one to the other.
If you have further questions, please ask on RCBot's talk page. — Richie 14:46, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for the answer, i know what will bot do for now!!!! --Saša Stefanović

"interwiki" links[edit]

The problem in using the interwiki links for linking the usage of a certain image within the commons into the Wikipedia only works for Wikipedia but not for Wikinews, Wikibooks etc. at the same time. So I would suggest another solution that can be added at the bottom of the image decription text of an image within the Commons until this problem is getting solved within the MediaWiki software:

Image usage
Usage of this image within the various Wikimedia projects:

Wikibooks
en, de
Wikinews
[the same]
Wikipedia
[the same]
[and so on...]

So this would adress the problem that there are many different projects and this solution would be also very compact and using the ISO-Codes as description would be sufficient. Arnomane 11:23, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

from Village Pump[edit]

I am developing RCBot, a bot whose main purpose at the moment is to crawl all Wikipedias in all languages and automatically replace filenames that have changed or will change on the Commons. There are several situations where the bot would be useful:

  • Suppose there were two identical files on the commons. This happens quite frequently as most images were created for one specific language Wikipedia and then uploaded to other languages where different people think it might be a good idea to have this image on the Commons and thus upload independent copies of the same image. Someone now discovers identical images and decides that one of them should be deleted. RCBot helps here by changing all links to the to-be-deleted file to the one that will "survive".
  • RCBot can help to rename an image on the Commons. Of course, the actual renaming of the image -- by uploading it again using a different file name -- needs to be done manually. But RCBot can change all links from the old file to the new file.

Up to now, RCBot is still in development and testing, but I'd like to receive some feedback about it. Do you think it is or will be useful? What functions do you miss?

Up to now, RCBot operates in 200 different Wikipedias. But I don't know whether files on the Commons are used by any other projects I need to be aware of? — Richie 10:10, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wow this feature is really needed. I'm very interested in seeing this bot in operation. The Commons are used by all Wikimedia-projects. Especially also Wikinews (see: http://www.wikinews.org). Arnomane 10:58, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Sounds like even more work. I noticed something strange about wikinews. If you look at the current weather you'll see several maps uploaded here on the Commons that are used there. One of them was wikinews:en:Image:World_C_8Apr2005at0800UTC.jpg at the moment I wrote this, but the image page says that There are no pages that link to this image. Is it because of weird template construction they use? Most other images work. Apparently, if you want to upload a file to wikinews, you are redirected to the Commons. So they need to be included. — Richie 17:04, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)
great idea! could help in standardizing image names. I do not know whether one can set up project pages at commons, but if so maybe do this and let me know so I will put the page on my watch-list. regards. Tobias Conradi 12:58, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • Halló Richie! Great idea! I want to let you know about
  1. en:User talk:Patrick#Did you know that ...
  2. en:User talk:Patrick#inline links at commons: to nonexisting images
Thanks Gangleri, I haven't thought about changing inline links to images yet, but the bot should be able to handle these as well since it just replaces Image:OLD by Image:NEW.
What is wrong about changing the link colour to red after an image is deleted? It just indicates that the image doesn't exists. No problem in my opinion, but I might miss something.
Vina
I see it as a problem that you can not follow any more / could never follow talks (and other inline references) about images that have been / will be deleted.
Example: Image:Satellite image of Romania in December 2001.jpg is now referenced at (commons:)Commons:Village pump. If you look at Special:Whatlinkshere/Image:Satellite image of Romania in December 2001.jpg you will not see Commons:Village pump in the list. Please compare Category:PD NASA and Special:Whatlinkshere/Category:PD NASA and you will see a different behaviour.
The "Image talk" namespace behaves as most others
  1. link colors: Image talk:Satellite image of Romania in December 2001.jpg - Image talk:Vina vom Schloss Neubronn 2004-07-E-08-300.jpg
  2. Whatlinkshere: Special:Whatlinkshere/Image talk:Satellite image of Romania in December 2001.jpg - Special:Whatlinkshere/Image talk:Vina vom Schloss Neubronn 2004-07-E-08-300.jpg
Another inconsistency in MediaWiki is that the link Image:foo bar blabla.png is allways blue. This is confusing especially for "newbies" and but also iritating for everybody.
Special:Whatlinkshere/Image:Vina vom Schloss Neubronn 2004-07-E-08-300.jpg does not list (commons:)Commons:Village pump either - the image is shown at the right.
Conclusions: For normal pages you can "fix" references either by having a redirect or changing the link. For categories you have to change the link because redirect of categories is not functional. For images you have no chance to detect (with standard MediaWiki functions) the pages where they are refered. You can compare the references with full http:-links / links using SERVER etc. Best regards Gangleri | Th | T 19:29, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wiktionary[edit]

Hoi,
I saw that you want to run a bot on the wiktionaries to deal with Commons. FYI we use mainly soundfiles for pronunciations. They have a naming convention. As long as files conform to these naming conventions, there is no chance that they will change their name. I have admin status on Commons to deal with problems. (Wrong soundfiles will be deleted as long as they cannot be renamed. )

Thanks, GerardM 20:59, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

That's right. The bot will be under manual control while still in development. By the way, I'm an admin myself. — Richie 21:49, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Need Rename[edit]

Need rename Image:Russia_Nothwest_1882.jpg to Image:Russia_Northwest_1882.jpg --Ustas 01:24, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Checked, no renaming needed. — Richie 16:26, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Bugreports[edit]

Please note that this Bot crippled cs:Bern. See the top left image. The description says "flag of Bern", but the picture is missing. -- cs:Wikipedista:Slady 23:31, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the bug report. However, the bot hasn't "crippled" cs:Bern, it just replaced 'Ch be canton map.png' by 'Map of Canton Bern.png' and leaved the flag untouched [1]. The flag has been deleted (not by me). — Richie 07:18, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for explaining. I tried to solve it by copying the flag from english Wikipedia (not the best way, but it can be corrected later, and at least the article is not "bleeding" now). I believe your Bot will remain bugfree! ;-) — cs:Wikipedista:Slady 10:11, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

Ang Wiktionary[edit]

Is there some way to have the RCBot work on the ang.wiktionary.org for some interwiki-links? Perhaps also some common words, like days of the week and months in various Indo-European languages? Thanks! --James Johnson 11:44, 21 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RCBot isn't an interwiki-link bot, he is only concerned with the usage of media files stored on the Commons. — Richie 12:59, 21 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Schaengel89 @me 19:51, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Flag Images[edit]

Can you tell me what flag images have you done so far? I saw you replace the Qatar flag image on the EN Wikipedia, good show. I have been doing the same thing, except by hand. If you need a list of countries that have flags on here, just let me know. Thanks for giving my wrist a break :). Zscout370 (sound off) 18:51, 2005 Jun 8 (UTC)

work for your bot[edit]

please mark the flags you've done. so we can delete the old ones. --¡0-8-15! 19:18, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

et.wikipedia.org[edit]

more see: et:Maailma riikide lipud

    • I personally think some of the new file names that were suggested here are not a good idea. I think we should create a list of file names that we should use. Example, the flag of Qatar used on en Wikipedia is Flag of Qatar.png, not Qatar flag 300.png. However, the bot does great work and if he wants work or has questions to ask, let me know here or at my Wikipedia account en:User:Zscout370. Zscout370 (sound off) 2005 June 30 05:22 (UTC)

Bot[edit]

Hallo
There is a template for bots for using it in the babelbox. you only need to add

bot

to the userpage of your bot. With greetings. Augiasstallputzer 14:00, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your bot on the Arabic Wikipedia[edit]

Hi, Richie. I am Meno25 from the Arabic Wikipedia. You can contact me at my English Wikipedia user page or my Arabic Wikipedia user page. You have a bot named RCBot on the Arabic Wikipedia. This bot has made only 6 edits on the Arabic Wikipedia. First edit: April 5, 2005 and last edit: November 5, 2005. The bot didn't make any edits for 15 months, so, what's the problem? Why is the bot not active? If you want to close the bot account so please let us know so that we remove the bot flag. Thank you. --Meno25 11:29, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request from Wikipedia siSwati[edit]

Sawubona, colleague. As you know the swati project is under discussion about its closure. In order to encourage someone to help here, I thought to request you as one of the bots in this Wiki. Please, could you review the links to the swati pages (articles, categories and templates are a hundred more or less) in german Wikipedia?. I did it in Commons, but without bot it is slow and hard to do. Ngiyabonga umngani.--Jatrobat 06:25, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The bot it not in use anymore and I have no intentions of reviving it any time soon. Sorry. — Richie 11:18, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's a pity. Thanks.--Jatrobat 22:51, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
