Thanks for uploading Image:Republican-koolaid.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}}to release it under the GFDL or{{PD-self}}to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. --EugeneZelenko 22:21, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the warning. But I gave the source which is www.encyclopediadramatica.com. I'm not sure who the creator is, but it seems all in good fun and free for fairuse. So no harm in uploading it. But if you feel it has no place on the commons, then go ahead and delete it. I fully understand, since, unlike my other images it is not being used in any articles and so serves no serious purpose. regards--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 20:57, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization-cruft[edit]

Well, since you asked... ;-)

The major gap we have is that Category:Wars (and, as an extension Category:Battles by war and the hypothetical Category:Military people by war) are badly incomplete. From the perspective of someone writing an article on en:, it would be nice to be able to search for the name of the war and, at least for major wars, find a category full of images to use. We do have a lot of good images, but most of them aren't linked to the war involved in any way.

The idea, then, is threefold:

  1. Create lots of sub-categories for (major) wars under Category:Wars.
  2. Organize the material under Category:Battles into corresponding sub-categories of Category:Battles by war.
  3. Organize the material under Category:Military people into corresponding sub-categories of Category:Military people by war.

Let me reiterate that this will likely be a long, boring, and fairly unrewarding process; so please don't feel obligated to do any work on it if you have more interesting things to do. Thanks! Kirill Lokshin 11:19, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was afraid of that. But I promised to help so I will try to, at least some. Last week (and weekend) was madness, so even if I had the inclination I wouldnt have had the time. Maybe this week will prove more generous, though right now, according to my Magic 8-ball(tm) "Signs point to NO" :<--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 13:59, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Author and source[edit]

Please identify author and source of images uploaded by you. Otherwise, they will be deleted. See Commons:Licensing. A.J. 11:11, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're not quite right: Commons is not an encyklopedia, It's a resource of free media, which copyright can be verivied. You uploaded images by author who died in 1992 with "PD" template, that's why I tread all your uploads with suspicion. I cannot promise you they won't be deleted: if not me, someone else will notice lack of this info and mark them with "no source" template, because source' is not about URL, it's copyright related info that matters. I can only be not very strict about 1 week term: if you cannot tell the author of some images, It's a little hard to prove they are PD, unless you tell original source, for expample: ancient encyklopedia.

I myself spend many time collecting paintings by Polish painters, and carefully pointing the author, date of creation and where it can be verified. If you value your work so much, I think you should do more effort than just telling the URL you used for download. If you disagree with some of my "no source" templates, you may start a discussion on COM:DEL.

André Jouineau[edit]

André Jouineau wrote a book French Aircraft: From 1939 to 1942, so his drawings cannot be in public domain. I'm very dissapointed about that: did you upload more of his picrures?

Your sources apparently aplly "fair use" principle, which is not acceptable here. A.J. 10:44, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

{subst:image source|Image:GrandeArmeeVictoryMarch.ogg}}

The file is also not an OGG (as labled), but is instead a WAV file... I'd be happy to convert it once its copyright status is clear. --Gmaxwell 08:27, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the file in question is a 35 second sample I made of La Victoire Est a Nous (Victory is ours/upon Us) which was played by Napoleon's army at triumphal processions or even when forming up for battle. I made it off of this CD which I legally purchased and own (I collect Military music, you see).
I can assure you, the original composer has been dead at least 100 years. Yes, it is in fact a wav file, but since wavs cannot be uploaded, I fibbed and made it into an ogg:). Unfortunately, this is all moot now, since, much like Boris' brother in "Love and Death" it has been bayoneted by a Polish Conscientious objector objector

.

Thank you, though, for your thoughtful offer.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 08:11, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
