Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi, you suggested I add categories to the pictures I upload. I've tried this in the past without success. I'd be very interested to learn how to do this intelligently. Thanks so much!

First, do a search on Commons for the subject of your picture. e.g. for File:USS Oklahoma (BB-37) sea trials 1916.JPG I searched for "USS Oklahoma (BB-37)" and found that it already had its own category. In such a case all you need to do is add that category to the image i.e. [[Category:USS Oklahoma (BB-37)]]

If the exact subject does not have its own category, but e.g. you know it is a US Battleship you can look under the "Battleships of the United States" Category to see if there is a category for the ship's class and you can use that category. Try to add at least some cat6egory, even just "Battleships of the United States" is better than nothing. Likewise if it is a ship steam turbine or naval gun, search for those terms and you will find categories for them. You can then look through the category for something more specific... e.g. Naval guns of the United States. Think of it like a shelf of books in a library... Categories are equivalent to Subjects in a library, and your image is equivalent to a book that you need to place under the correct subject on the shelf. regards. Rod. Yes, you've got it sorted out ! You can add more than one category e.g. if the image is of say USS Iowa and also shows a good closeup of its 16 inch guns, you could add 16 inch Naval gun category as well as the Battleship category. regards, Rod Rcbutcher (talk) 01:55, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
