Hello, Plantman77!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Book covers[edit]

Hi Plantman77 - please note that book covers are copyrighted material and can't be uploaded here unless they are old enough to be out of copyright (typically 70 years after the death of the cover artist). I have had to delete the image "Secret life of plants thompkins bird.jpg" that you uploaded. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 10:48, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, It is my understanding that this cover is public domain. Please see: en:File:Secret-life-plants-cover.jpg.
If the above is true, can I use my photo of the book as the one on the above page has some flaws or do I need to use the this one.
Thank You
Plantman77
Hi Plantman77 - sorry, no, it isn't public domain. The en:wiki page actually specifically states that it is copyright (as would be expected), and only used there under Fair Use, which is permitted (with certain strict conditions) on en:wiki, but not permitted here on Commons. Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 18:47, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
