Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding.

Uploads information[edit]

Hi Phillip, I noticed that you have been uploading lots of engravings lately (which is great) but without adding basic data to the Information template, like date, source and original author (as in this file). It would be better if you could take the time to add similar informations, as they make it easier for other people to find your contributions and are also necessary to identify their real origins. Regards,--Underlying lk (talk) 15:33, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I don't have the information you suggest and it would take me too long to research it in-between uploading the several hundred prints I own. I thought it was better to concentrate on getting them into the public domain first. Clearly, the information I provided on the (very well-known) print you have taken as an example was enough for you to develop further. The information provided in the file names is all I have at the moment. Have mercy on me! :-) This is a take it or leave it situation! Let me know if would like me to stop my current activity and I will upload them elsewhere. Phillip Medhurst (talk) 07:51, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Right. In the absence of any further guidance I am aborting my current project. The files which might have been uploaded may now be viewed at http://www.flickr.com/groups/the_phillip_medhurst_collection_of_bible_prints and http://www.flickr.com/groups/phillip_medhurst_bible 1,455 prints in all. I cannot emulate eg. The British Museum whose prints are being put online: they no doubt have a team of full-time paid researchers who are able to engage in the very time-consuming task of finding out the source, date and originator of each print. Oh well. Never mind. Phillip Medhurst (talk) 11:02, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Good. Files may now also be viewed at:-

Hi again. From the above, I gather that you've decided that adding date, source and author of your uploads would be too time-consuming, and if forced to choose you'd rather upload those files somewhere else than provide basic information about them. Adding that kind of data is mandatory, unless I'm mistaken (see Commons:Essential information) so continuing on the current path of adding {{Own}} to every file is not much of an alternative. Having to write the same source/author over and over is an annoyance, but there are tools available to make the task less tedious without compromising the accuracy of the data. One of them is Commons:Commonist, perhaps you should try it. Cheers, --Underlying lk (talk) 12:25, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Apocalypse 29. Satan bound for 1000 years. Revelation cap 20 v 1. Mortier's Bible. Phillip Medhurst Collection.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Bringing Wikimedia into Disrepute[edit]

Dear "Underlying 1k"

Your failure to give an apology for the insulting remark on your Talk page and your vandalisation of my contributions is noted. What a disgrace. Those of us who have always lived in a free society find this kind of behaviour very shocking on the rare occasions we encounter it. It is difficult for us to know how to deal with this, another nail in the coffin of Wikimedia commons as we have known it. We will vote with our feet. No more licences will be granted to your organisation.

As regards my "laziness" I suggest you view those of my files where very detailed and extensive information has been given when this has been available. There is no excuse for high-handedness when it is coupled with ignorance. Some of us have been working very hard to enrich our global culture. My contributions speak for themselves. Do yours?

Yours sincerely, Phillip Medhurst (my real name) Phillip Medhurst (talk) 17:55, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry Phil. I have rescued your Apocalypse files and uploaded them to Pinterest. I think they'll be safer there. --Philip De Vere (talk) 19:35, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Stilling the storm has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Re the file Teachings of Jesus 5 of 40. parable of the mustard seed. Jan Luyken etching. Bowyer Bible.gif[edit]

Phillip, I had cause to use the image you kindly uploaded some 14 years ago, and have updated the page for it at File:Teachings of Jesus 5 of 40. parable of the mustard seed. Jan Luyken etching. Bowyer Bible.gif to the {{Artwork}} template to take advantage of the mulitlingual autolinkining features it offers. I have tried to respect the information you originally included in the standard Information section, but wanted to bring the change to your attention in case I have inadvertently mucked something up. I would be glad to make any alterations or even revert the change if that is your preference. Yours sincerely, papageno (talk) 01:27, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

File:Dewsbury Minster 001.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
