First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. Finn Rindahl 21:31, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I gave the categories a go for Image:Chicago violent crime map.png, hopefully without error. --Peter Talk 14:53, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, thanks ;o) Finn Rindahl 15:31, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am now proud owner of a TUSC account!

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 19:29, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:World regional languages map.png[edit]

I think you should add Dutch.

You now have 11 world regional languages on your world regional languages map. I feel you should add Dutch to it (maybe combined with African)! Ischa1 (talk) 13:39, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, for which countries? Netherlands, Belgium, and the relevant Caribbean nations would make sense, but would South Africa and Namibia? The yardstick I've been using is whether the language would be very useful for travel in a country. I know there would be the possibility to use it there, but have no idea whether a significant enough percentage of the populations there speak it (Afrikaans) for a traveler to realistically use Dutch as a lingua franca. It might be good to first solicit opinions at voy:Talk:Talk. --Peter Talk 19:00, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, Dutch/Afrikaans makes sense, then we could also add South Africa and Namibia. I feel like we should add Dutch for these countries:

  • the Netherlands
  • Belgium
  • France (French Flanders)
  • Caribbean
  • Suriname
  • South Africa
  • Namibia
  • perhaps Indonesia

Thanks for uploading File:Central Saint Petersburg-banner3.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Whew, that's a big notice, but thanks for the reminder--I have now added the appropriate license info. --Peter Talk 16:47, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Travel map of Arctic[edit]

Hey Peter! I was looking for a travel map of the Arctic to use on Wikivoyage. However I can't really find one which is usable (which is devided in in regions like all the other travel maps we have)! Can you create one for us? Thanks! Ischa1 (talk) 15:31, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chicago crime[edit]

Hi. I just saw your upload depicting Chicago crime. The attachment here is what I think a crime map of Chicago would look like if all violent crimes swept under the rug were revealed.

I noticed that File:Continents colour2.svg has a coloring error on the Kazakh side of Vozrozhdeniya Island. Also, it still has the former island as surrounded by water in the Aral Sea, rather than the land (more accurately, toxic wasteland) of the Aralkum Desert. —ReGuess (talk) 05:03, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering if you could make separate files for the icons on File:Amtrak icons.svg. Some of them have been created, but not all. For instance, we do have a single icon for the Empire Service, but not the Auton Train. Contact me if you need clarification.--Davidng913 (talk) 17:56, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Corrupted SVG File for DC Neighborhood Maps[edit]

I'm having a hard time opening your SVG file for the DC Neighborhood Map and I'm worried that it might be corrupted. I'd very much like to obtain your editable SVG file so that I can produce a CAD drawing to use for 3D printing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.--Gussmans (talk) 12:52, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
