Hello, Penyulap!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Hi there, this image, and the other one below it are of en:wp:Wikipe-tan a well-known charcter in the wikipedia community. The source of the original work is from wikipedia. I can't actually edit to add the source to these images as they have been deleted. File:Wikipe-tan sorceress color.svg is the original work. Penyulap (talk) 07:48, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Great work on きぼう Kibō.png but...

instead of photoshopping the rest of the station out of the image can you instead just darken the non-relevant parts? My reasoning is to avoid giving an inaccurate depiction of the station. Also please give the font and text size of the lettering so if another member notices a misspelling they will be able to fix it more easily.--Craigboy (talk) 04:39, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

There is this one here I just did, is it technically ok on your screen ?
Photoshop ? No I get the same effects by using GIMP + Flushing lots of cash down the toilet. 8-) Actually I agree with the darkening, That is what I'd like to do, I thought that would be cool originally, but I'm a bit of a beginner with GIMP, it's got so many features, I mean, It's so got everything that it's kind of hard to know where to start. The font is a good idea though, I can do that for sure. Please feel free to update the image entirely, It's like fuzzy with bad lighting and all, it was as good as I could find, but I am certain that I can find better, plus there is the external extra platform bit totally missing! Anyhow I have found a quirky way to browse chunks of 200 nasa images per page so stay tuned for better pics in the near future (so long as nobody springs upon me with political attacks I can't handle at all.
Oh, I did the same thing with the russian orbital segment one, it's actually got a bit of radiator across a docking module, but it was kindof better than the drawing i thought.
Please do help me with more comments and criticism on my actual work, it's a big help to me. (I have to be careful here to specify actual work after the Mlm42 thing). Penyulap (talk) 09:34, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
I also using GIMP. I'm guessing you found nasaimages.org? In dark lighting the Russian image looks great but if the brightness on your monitor is higher than you can clearly see where its been edited so it might just be best to simply darken the USOS instead of trying to remove it completely. I may try to shade one of the images but I can't promise it'll be good enough to upload.--Craigboy (talk) 06:21, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Hey I didn't actually know about that site, thanks ! Also I found one shading tool, so I should be able to do more of it from now on, now I get the idea, I will update the others, shading where possible and so forth.Penyulap (talk) 11:19, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
In regards to the Dextra image I was thinking maybe a little more precise shading but the circle you did works and looks fine. Also I've cleaned up the Russian Orbital Segment image but now the annotations need to be re-added.--Craigboy (talk) 21:09, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
Sweet that looks fantastic. I can't manage it right now, I'm trying to put out some of the fires on the ISS I shouldn't even be at the computer however, I have been living in the hospital for the last week, talked a nurse into bringing me a printout of the iss talkpage a few days ago, addicted or what ? omg. I shouldn't be at the computer now. Also I have an emergency operation pending. I should (gesture of prayer) be ok. But patchy on wiki, or just unavailable. The old one might be an idea, i saved your brilliant work though on my computer and will definitely get to it as a priority. The ISS lede is a mess as per ISS Tp, I'm not fixing it. Hassling me on my en.wiki tp is faster (almost missed your work/message this session). Penyulap (talk) 17:31, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
Text is done, it needs two straight lines, forgot how to select that layer Penyulap (talk) 05:16, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
For the labeling system how about instead of having "Soyuz/Progress" we have "Soyuz or Progress", with the words of the one currently docked boxed? Also the image should probably once again reference that ATV docks to Zvevda rear. Here's an example of my proposal (but of course the text would be the correct size and font and the Russian translations would be included).--Craigboy (talk) 17:59, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Possibly we can have it with the particular ship's designation underneath, smaller unboxed writing such as TMA-14 or whatever it is ? The arrows need re-doing as well, as one of them points the wrong way, although I'm working on a bunch of image projects, labelling the MARS 500, I only got one label done so far, and the ISS itself is a massive project, and there is also ground control centers as well, it needs updating too (current work). Penyulap (talk) 09:15, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Can you clarify your first sentence suggestion?--Craigboy (talk) 22:22, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

I am taking a break from all this Wiki stuff, too many morons with nothing better to do. People who are not experts who just want to criticise because they have nothing better to do. I am posting pics to my Facebook fan page and Twitter now to support my book, its more rewarding and people are complimentary not critical. But I do appreciate your support and kind words, thank you. Wicked !! Fantastic work, I'll get those labeled in a bunch of languages and pop them right on in ! (do you think MLM (current planned position) - ISS module.jpg could be a little brighter than it is ? I know it's probably just my monitor being turned down a bit, but I'm thinking if it's no problem, and can still be shaded, it'd be good on a wider range of monitor settings) Penyulap (talk) 19:35, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
I've made "MLM (current planned position) - ISS module.jpg" a tad brighter.--Craigboy (talk) 01:09, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
About 3 or 4 times as much, it's still a Nauka only image, rather than where it is image. Sortof looking for a dextre sort of feeling to it. I've done some of the translation work for the ROSPN image, though, can you make some more space for me in the image ? basically zoom out or pop some black border around it, so I can write the text more freely, and then you can crop it later on ? That'd be a big help. Penyulap (talk) 17:04, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Penyulap, from where did you take the Wikipetan-nun image or did you create this really by yourself? --Túrelio (talk) 14:09, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

I make it myself, that is the easy part, working out how to do the licensing is the impossible crap, absolutely impossible, it can't be done, I can make an image in 5 minutes, and then it takes three hours to try to upload it properly and it still gets deleted because apparently it's done wrong, why bother, I mean, just upload to flickr or something instead, why make it so hard to understand how to upload here, I know what I made, but there is no way that you can describe it according to the SHIT jargon that commons gives you to choose from, it makes answering someones request all but impossible unless it's just updating an existing image. Penyulap 14:21, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
No need to shout to someone who tries to help you! I have now added the proper sources and related author names to the description. You should do the same with your other derivatives that are based on other images. --Túrelio (talk) 14:40, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

The Wikipe-tan figure in File:Sister Wikipe-tan lowres.png was created from File:Wikipe-tan wearing ao dai.png, right? --Túrelio (talk) 14:43, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Sorry Túrelio, I shout at commons !wizard, and looking at the rest, I shout at the toolserver which invites you to write a thesis on which images you used, and shout at the upload form which gives one language to choose from for the description, and yell at the docs in general. :) but I do not yell at you, I'm sorry about that. Penyulap 14:47, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
There is no way to explain, I made this one just to explain this one. I think next is to image map and animate how I did it, just to explain to people who nominate for deletion. Penyulap 14:54, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Way above "common" but hey...

The Commons Barnstar
I don't think I've ever given a star over here, so when the chance presents... Creativity is what we use to fight the spirit of gravity and death. Your works are appreciated. INeverCry 20:40, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

I've never received a Barnstar over here, Thank you INeverCry, I appreciate that. Penyulap 06:25, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Me either. I don't talk to too many folks here though. I just do my thing behind the scenes, moving files, adding cats, uploading pics, etc, which is enough for me. I like giving barnstars even more than receiving them. If more people got the recognition they deserved, all of wiki would be a better more productive place with a better atmosphere. But too many people are tied up in their particular pet projects or only interact with a small circle of friends. I like to give barnstars here and there when I see those who deserve it. I think you deserved one just for the "Grumpy Editor Award" by itself. 95% of the 50 or so people I've given a barnstar have been obviously pleased and enthusiastic about it, while the other 5% gave just a quick thanks. I've never had anyone say they didn't want it. INeverCry 07:33, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
Sometimes to simply say thank you is the polite thing to do, or so I have heard. I am careful to review someone's work before I award any, and certainly I already know just how much you get done behind the scenes :) The drama is ridiculous pretty much all of the time, especially for the seriously fast editors on the popular articles. So many landmark editors have left over harassment.
Actually a few weeks ago there was some big and silly blow up at ANI about someone anonymous giving out large volumes of barnstars, and, like everything else at ANI the solutions raised were pretty crazy.
I can't say that I stay away from the drama boards, but I do quite enjoy cheering people up and giving them a laugh, so I think I shall continue in such endeavours. Penyulap

Unblock request

It seems the logical place to put this unblock request is on commons, as I have been blocked on en wiki for this diff here showing my marking my pen-name account here on commons with an alternate account template. I created the account on 2012-08-21 at 19:50:09, and then signed out, and signed back in under my main account and marked the page to identify it as an alternative account. That was six minutes after creating the account.

The explanation for the block is here where elen of the roads has her only sysop flag and has blocked both access to my talkpage there, and also, Elen has blocked my alternate account (Bittybattybitbotisnotabot) there. here is the summary of contributions and block log. As you can see, there are no contributions to English wikipedia by Bitty batty bit bot. So clearly, the 'block evasion' must have been on commons, however, I've never been blocked on commons, or any of the other two dozen or so sister projects I contribute to, nor has my main alternative account, PALZ9000 been blocked on the projects where he's currently being used, PALZ has only ever been blocked on en wiki. So the problem must be here, and the bad poetry is the only thing that Bitty Bot has done. Bitty is the pen name for the Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy styled poetry 'recited' by the bot PALZ 9000, who is styled after the HAL 9000 computer in 2001 a space odyssey. The styling of PALZ 9000 is demonstrated and explained here.

The poetry is modelled after Marvin's lullaby by Marvin the Paranoid Android in hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy, he is not paranoid though, he is more of a 'permanently depressed' robot according to the book, and his lifespan is 37 times longer than the age of the universe. There are original additions and changes to suit a wikipedia editor's feelings at seeing their work degrade slowly over time.

To capture the mood of 'endless depression' combined with a robot's lack of creativity, the music 'soundtrack' consist of an auditory illusion, a sound which give the impression of a single note which endlessly falls. The backing track and poetry recital is set up as a PALZ 9000 the robot giving an poetry reading in a sound studio with possibly a canned audience. It is intended that the poetry and overall effect rivals Vorlon poetry, which, according to the hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy, is the worst poetry in the known universe. I think it doesn't quite get that far, it's bad, but I figure I have heard even worse than this.

Is the poetry bad enough that it would constitute abuse on Commons ? Should I have my alternate and main accounts here blocked for the bad poetry, or for me marking my pen-name account as a legitimate alternative account of my legitimate alternative bot account PALZ ? I had to create Bitty as a pen name to upload and 'speak' in-character as a puppet of PALZ, because PALZ has a bot-bit on enlgish wikipedia and so cannot speak as a person, he can only do bot-like editing because it does not attract the same level of scrutiny as human edits do. So if he 'spoke' it would abuse the bot bit. But bitty bot is not a bot and has no bot bit. With no bot bit, bitty batty bot can talk like a bot, but with no bot bit to abuse, he can't abuse a bot bit, even if he pretends to be a bot.

Should I apply for a bot bit for Bitty bot ? because if he became a legit bitty batty bot, he wouldn't be able to speak like a person, but he could upload bad poetry which would attract less scrutiny by human beings, which, considering how bad the poetry is, that would be a good thing. However, for such a small amount of poetry, it would seem that a bot bit for bitty batty bot is not an appropriate bit, as bot bits are for bots that do a lot of editing, and I wouldn't want to create a bad poetry generating program just to make and upload bad poetry as I only needed what was already made and donated, nothing more.

Should I ask that Bitty Batty Bot be banned or blocked on commons ? should I ask for bitty to be blocked on Russian and Japanese projects as well ? What should I do about my other sockpuppet account called PALZ9000 ? PALZ edits and is currently editing on Russian, Japanese and German wikipedias, and actually he has more rights than I do too. Thank you!

Penyulap, thank you so much for your work on the photograph of George Simon. What you've done is exactly what I'd hoped for - thank you! Re. the artist: I didn't take this picture, but the problem is more with gallery spaces in Guyana (very few and very overcrowded). In fact the artist has been extremely helpful in supplying pictures for the article - this is one of the best he had (and he'd asked if I might be able to tidy it up as he thought it looked a bit of a mess too, but I didn't have the skills...) Again, thank you for your help. Lorelei (talk) 18:17, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Do you have a better version of File:London Zoo 011181.png?

Deutsch  English  español  français  magyar  Nederlands  polski  português  svenska  suomi  македонски  українська  日本語  עברית  +/−

Thank you for your submission of File:London Zoo 011181.png. While all submissions are useful, do you think you might be able to supply a better quality version of the same, or similar, content? In many cases, the largest and highest resolution possible is the most useful version to have available. (MediaWiki has automatic resizing functionality, so there is no need for multiple versions of the same image at different sizes, users can select any size and the software will generate and cache the needed resolution on the fly.)

If you can supply the same exact image as File:London Zoo 011181.png at a larger resolution (or media at a higher bitrate, etc.), please just upload it over the original, users will get the new higher quality version with no further effort on your part. If on the other hand, the content is only similar, it is best to select a new image name, as there may be uses already where some aspect of the existing media was key to the usage. In the latter case, if you can provide a crosslink reference to the new image in the older one and vice versa, that will be extremely helpful.

Again, thank you very much for your contribution, it is appreciated.

Checking it at the moment, usually takes ages to upload large files. Ages. Something about searching for dups I think. Penyulap 18:21, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, that's wired. I just uploaded the half of the image which is working for me. You could try another Browser and/or clear all of your Browser's history? --McZusatz (talk) 07:40, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
Can you try this, open that half in a image editor, cut and paste it so it is the same size as the original, and then upload that to see if it works. Penyulap 08:23, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
Already done. --McZusatz (talk) 09:14, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
Working to upload a smaller version, that usually works. I just can't upload files the size I want to on commons. Even when I can, it takes hours. Penyulap 13:21, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it, please read the text above again and follow the links in it,if you still need help ask at the ? ->Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 07:20, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

I bet it's cause your not programmed to. But that's ok, I forgive you I like robots. Robots are cool. Although, mind you I much prefer robots that are like 50 storeys high like in the day the Earth stood still. Actually, someone was saying the other day I am like that guy, how people don't understand that I'm nice and all, but only the smart ones can see that I am really really nice. Meh. I don't much care. I'd rather just be liked by the smart people, the other ones can do as they choose. whatever. Penyulap 07:28, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Please stop putting the QIC nomination of this image to the Consensual Review of QIC page. The Image guidelines clearly say that a Quality Image has to have at least 2 megapixel resolution, and if it has not, there may not be a consensus to promote. Besides, a deletion candidate is very unlikely to get a QI in general. So, I'm going to make the frame red again, please note that repeated reverts may be considered as disruptiveness and result in a block. Thanks - A.Savin 14:44, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Brilliant way to encourage artists to add to commons. First suggest that parody and satire should aim for photorealism, then assign personality rights to hair, then threaten blocks to get consensus. Way to go. This is why so many images need help and will never get it, and why most of these are fake. Penyulap 15:04, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Re: PenWho.gif Please be careful not to destroy the animation

Sorry, I was trying to fix it and I didn't notice any degradation. It doesn't show as an animation in my browser, but I guess that being the only user you can break its thumbnails if you wish. --Nemo 15:00, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Lol, no, I not break fingernails. No, the animation is like me, most people will walk right past and not notice anything. It is those who take the time to examine closely that would notice the interesting part. If it loads up the 3MB into your browser, all you need to do is wait about 30 or was it 45 seconds. That gives most people who goto my talkpage the opportunity to completely miss the whole thing. I like that. Penyulap 15:05, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

oh ok, I thought it was the 'no talkies because you irritate me' kind of thing, good to know that is not the case then. I DO appreciate people who make free music for everyone, it's important to fight those who'd leave everyone with nothing to listen to otherwise. Some extend copyright not because the work is financially viable, but on principle, the same way corporations tear out water taps anywhere near their businesses that sell drinks, just so that there is no choice.
When you know how to search for it, there really is a lot of free stuff out there, good to see you add to it. I was making a doodle and was pleased to find cool music for it. But I'm after someone to be a newsreader on their webcam now, so I can add them into the computer generated space station and do like a news or educational sort of video. I reckon that'd be cool. Haven't got there yet. Keep up the good work with that music and keep the award. Penyulap 17:41, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

how about now ?
remember you may need to press shift and click refresh to see the new version. Penyulap 18:44, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
Many thanks for the new version. Since the map is meant to illustrate historical relations bewteen historical Tibet and historical Mongolia, both Tibet and Mongolia should be larger. There use to be a Mongol-Tibet border. The map File:Historic Tibet Map.png shows that Tibet was larger than the actual Tibet Autonomous Region, and contained part of Qinghai and Sichuan. Similarly, the map File:Greater Mongolia.svg shows that Greater Mongolia contained both Mongolia and Inner-Mongolia. There was a border between Inner-Mongolia and Tibet as shown here for instance : http://tibettruth.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/map.png So, if possible, could you figure Historic Tibet Map and Greater Mongolia with a border region in north Tibet / south Mongolia? Thanks again. --Rédacteur Tibet (talk) 16:20, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
In progress. I shall start with something along the lines of the wordpress image, if you can find anything else which has borders more to your liking, or greater detail, please do so, I can use it as a source for the new image. Penyulap 16:30, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Dear Penyulap,

Can this map here also be updated with the borders of South Sudan? The new country of South Sudan can be coloured light grey like Kenya in this map which has a Muslim population of 10-15%. (not white--which would be 0%) Can you update this map? Just curious.

PS: I live in Canada today but was born in Malaysia as I said here Its just a pity that some maps on Commons are out of date...but this map is used on wikipedia and it looks important. I hope you can help...but its your decision and I respect this. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:08, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you

Thank you for supporting Dmitri.

I'm sharing my latest post on user problems noticeboard with you here:

By the way, some of our friends considered Dmitri not as a buddy but a baddy on Commons because of what the user supposedly did on Wikipedia. Will this user or someone else gain some brownie points on Commons (appreciation, barnstar, whatever) for something good done on English Wikipedia? Also, why do we view Wikipedia = English Wikipedia? Will the approach of the admins would've been the same if Dmitri had corresponding events in, say, Zazaki or Volapük Wikipedia? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 15:31, 3 February 2013 (UTC).

I'm glad that you share with me. I think that there is nothing that we can do to bring him back. It is important that the community looks at what happened there, make amends and be vigilant, and I think many have done so, I don't see a need to do much more. It would be nice to have him return, but that is pretty much up to him, and having experienced that, I don't think it will be soon if at all. Penyulap 16:02, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Ditto on the thanks. I do hope he does decide to return. I gave some heavy-handed slaps at en:wp as well. I think it is more about jealousy/envy/image wars than anything else. Pictures I take for wikimedia may be lame compared to some, but I don't go out of my way to slam better photographers than I. I think I will just drop the issue for now before admin over there get to power-tripping on me with blocks etc. I do not regret any of my actions and wish policy allowed me to be far more firm with my reactions. Got your email and read the link btw.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:20, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. I do think it is important not to drive away people on either side of the issue. Best not to concentrate on anything except the show of support for people who are clearly helping the project. People who can admit their mistakes are very valuable indeed, so when that happens it's best forgotten altogether. After all, you wouldn't want the 'never admit I'm wrong' attitude that is destroying editor retention on en.wiki here as well. I applaud people who can apologise and you two should too. The lesson is learned if that happens. Penyulap 02:13, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank you 2

Thanks for your help,I don't agree upload images with just words,a lot of companies have logos without (take out) image, for exemple Qatar foundation is a sponsor F.C. Barcelona and on t shirt says qatar fountation non-tree.

I don't agree with fair use ,it's an illegal way to be legal, but it will do on englishwiki, because wikipedia from usa and americans (from usa) have paid this project,at least the most or half.

For us (wikipedia commons) free images, thereby ,i delete copyright and left image free, see even at stadiums ,tv,magazines, etc,we see that logos, and everybody know it

My question is,it is possible to change Typeface.--EEIM (talk) 03:56, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Yes it is, you could ask at the talkpage of this user, they have it in their signature. I can't recall all the ways to do things myself. I have some of it in my signature. Try asking this user as well, they're brilliant. Text can be rotated also using markup and you can add shadows. Penyulap 04:07, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

I figure as much, but you'll get people who find plenty wrong with anything along those lines. You've probably seen them pick out 'dust spots' which no human being can see, and no reader / viewer WILL ever see, EVER. I can have a bit of a look, but it is going to be like, patchy. There will be telltale marks galore from the cloning, there always are and of course, because there is the original, people who wouldn't even notice will complain. :D But yeah, I'll have a look if you like, no promises. Penyulap 21:35, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

ZOMG 18 Megabytes one image ? zomg are you kidding me ? Penyulap 21:36, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

My camera is a model or 3 lower and it does 15mp. It uses 95% compression I think, so the .jpgs are only 5-8 mb. If I download the RAW from the camera they are 20-30 mb. I have never used a clone tool in gimp. I just copy/paste feathered elipses and rectangles from areas next to what I want to remove.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:51, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
There is a LOT of work there, are you sure you want this ? It's a LOT of work looking at the image. Penyulap 22:37, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Don't worry about it then. ViperSnake151 is the one that is really trying to get it as an FP. The graphics lab already did some work on it. He should learn gimp or psp and try it himself. Should we create a few socks to vote for it so the matter will be done? It may go in a third time if someone does remove the feet.--Canoe1967 (talk) 23:15, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Four times if I remove the best foot first. I started assembling the zinc coated steel step in full CGI. I think the feet are feet, now, if they were dust spots we could lose control of our pedantry, but I don't know that we should actually know what our opinion is on feet, so we should just stick to the number of pixels (and not engaging the olde noggin). I also think the image is rather ordinary, this is a much better gallery of industrial pictures, but it's not free because we haven't asked nice. (It's the engine factory for the International Space Station.) Penyulap 23:38, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

I feel guilty that I dragged you into this. It may fail featured for other reasons. Should we re-enter your no feet version and sock vote it? It needs at least 7 support and 2/3 ratio over oppose. It is losing now and there is a time factor.--Canoe1967 (talk) 01:01, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Even though they are mandatory on En.wikipedia, I don't care for socks, that is why I got chucked, they looked at my socks and they were all public and legit, so a few bullies banned me against consensus. Not that I mind them wearing a T-Shirt that says they're stupid, it looks good on them. I just have work to do learning a few languages and programming a replacement website, same as I learnt to draw.
It's probably easier to ask me to draw some featured animation really. It would be a s**tload faster. You could look over the kind of stuff I have done and figure from that. Penyulap 10:33, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
I may join you full time here soon. A dikhed admin has me on ANI over at en:wp. It will give me a good excuse to work on images instead of trying to keep text decent over there.--Canoe1967 (talk) 11:33, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Ha! what did you try to do, edit en.wiki without giving an admin a bl**job ? Silly you ! Yeah, right now I'm trying to sort out python so I can fill up a new site all robotically. There is a lot to absorb in this language. Penyulap 11:40, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
A BLP requested we fix his birthdate at the help desk. The birthdate in the article had no source so I adjusted to the request. It turns out there are sources for both dates and an admin insists that we use his sourced date and not the sourced date from the person themselves, go figure.--Canoe1967 (talk) 12:01, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Translating an SVG map or Corel Draw map

Thank you for the explanation and example, I think I got what you mean: a single image for all wikipedias were extra text, drawings, icons, etc can be added through code in each wikipedia separately instead of modifying the original image in Commons. Did I get it right? Just a few remarks from my side:

  • I am very much in favour of SVG as a format for maps (specially as it can be edited as text if necessary). Can this sort of thing be done with an SVG image as a base? I would like to keep the map as an SVG file.
  • Can the location of the text be done with any graphical tool under linux? Calculating the right position by hand to enter it in the code would take ages when there is a lot of text to add (as in the map I want to translate).
  • Even if this works, the translating problem remains: as the text cannot be extracted as text from the original map the translation is very difficult (as I do not speak the original language). I can only think of trying to copy and paste the "text" into some pdf file or something of the sort and try to turn it into real text through OCR but I am far from sure it would work...

Good idea, though...--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 21:05, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Yes,
  • Yes,
  • no problem.

It can be svg I'm sure. But I don't do svg, I'm learning a bunch of other tools and languages like python at the moment. Svg is far down the list of things to learn. Adjusting the request at the image lab should do the trick, there are people there who can do svg and it should be easy to do.

I don't know, but there is an imagemap editor on some wikipedias I think you switch it on in user preferences. It outputs code for linking different parts of images to different links. As a side-effect, it would also tell you the exact co-ordinates of the point on the picture. google or help desk that one, I can't recall how I switched it on, Z, my master bot programmer helped me out on that one. Today though I do what you were going to do, I just guess, but I don't have a job to do on that image. The imagemap tool is the go, no installation required and you'll pick up more skills on the way, BONUS !

There are plenty of people who speak Russian, you can use those babelfish templates people put on their userpages to find them. Clicking on the template helps there I think, OR just goto Russian wikipedia and find a English template and click on that, OR use the embassies on either site to find people who speak those languages and can help with the translation. Or just ask on a help desk there are plenty here.

It will work no problem, help desks everywhere, help files first though, and google too I guess. If all else fails, ask. This is a simple task by comparison to some of the things I want to learn and am learning ! :D If you look at my uploads, you can see the progression I have made from non-artist to anim artist in a the short time the timestamps indicate. Nothings impossible, just know that you know nothing and read and learn everything. Penyulap 21:29, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention: translating the SVGs themselves is pretty easy and quick when text is real text (not turned into a path): there is even a tool for it in Commons. Or a run-of-the-mill text editor can do the job, inkspace... The problem starts when text is not text but an image...--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 21:10, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Ha! try to change the text in this. Anyhow, you have the solution today without the svg being modified, it is possible. Sure, the svg will be modified, but I'm a fix it NOW! NOW! NOW! kind of person :) Any run-of-the-mill newbie can search and replace the code in the edit window easier than learning another tool I figure. Either way is great. Penyulap 21:29, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Hello, thanks for volunteering, I think I have the way to translate and change the text in the SVG at last: adding the original text to a pdf and doing OCR of it turns the false text into real text I can translate. I just need a bit of time to translate it all. Thank you anyway!--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 11:11, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Opinion?

I was blocked for 48 hrs. over there. Other editors feel my combative style of editing is way off the mark. Would you mind popping over, reading a few details, and voicing an opinion here on whether I should be a total suck-up like many other editors are?--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:29, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I was looking down the talkpage and thought I got to it at the guitarist thingy, I went off looking at that to see where the personality rights problem was, and the edit war, and couldn't see it. (Actually, the photo used in the article gives an incorrect source today it would appear, the hair is different)
Now that I see your block, ZOMG what a frikkin GEM of a block that is, improbably esoteric and gawd, no attempt at all to even look like policy. That is hilarious and historical (although I would guess there have to be better ones we haven't seen, but you know, who can find them).
I think leaving it without an appeal is like me, someone shoves a foot in their mouth and you're like 'well, they did put it there after all, and they do look well, it's a bit obvious, do I need to say ?' yeah, that is hilarious what 'passes' for policy over there.
" for persistent aggravation of other editors unbecoming of a collegial editing environment." yeah, that is a historical gem. Well done. I don't think I could invent one as stupid as that if I was trying to at short notice, it sounds so much like a self-parody as it is. Penyulap 01:04, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
I think I will just let it slide and not make waves over it otherwise they may keep pushing my buttons. Btw any ideas for an animated map for w:Centennial Voyageur Canoe Pageant? It is one of my 1st articles. I was thinking of dates lighting up at each city and the rivers they used showing as blue highlight. Sections with portages in another colour. A zoom into each of the 24 legs with dates and communities showing at each end?--Canoe1967 (talk) 12:29, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
Something that size would need to be done as a video, there is a limit to how many pixels can be changed in total for gifs on commons. I often grind up against it. A video is possible. 90% of blocks of experienced editors are just plain trolling. Leaving the worst ones in place just returns the favour. End of the day, en.wikipedia failed long ago. Penyulap 15:09, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
Are there any free licence maps of Canada in that scale? 500px between communities type thing.--Canoe1967 (talk) 15:20, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
That's a good question, look into it :D
Can add together a series of smaller ones... Penyulap 15:23, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
If it's a video you can mix in a lot of stuff, a growing line drawing the route moving across the map, arrow moving along a river, photos of the towns and the entrants and so on. Just have to find a selection of all the bits you'd like... Penyulap 16:32, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I think I will start with File:Rivers-Canada-frame.png. Low res, but I may be able to scale and guassian it to make it bigger. I will make 22 frames with each waypoint marked so I have originals of each location, then try adding glowing rivers/arrows/dates/names etc. in tween frames.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:12, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Is there a commercial image somewhere showing the route ? Penyulap 17:58, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
I don't think they had ink in 1967. I gave up using that river image. I was too hard to figure out where all the waypoints are on it. I may just wait for a map that has rivers and cities marked well. The CIA one in the article may have to do until that happens.--Canoe1967 (talk) 23:34, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
But isn't there a copyright image out there on the web somewhere to use as a source ? or a list of localities and so on ? Penyulap 23:46, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
The list is in the article. I have never seen a map of them though.--Canoe1967 (talk) 05:42, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
It's do-able, but not today. Penyulap 06:59, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
No biggy. If my skills were better then I could create one that may make valued or featured image status. Btw that Times Square image needs one more support vote at this point to make featured status. If it makes it then other editors may have time to work on a version with no feet. I just got dragged to ANI again so I may have time if I get an extended or indef block.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:01, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
give the block to me, I need to put in more time learning programming so I can replace the project. Commons is pretty crap too behind the scenes, they had cut the feed of images to my little website (not the replacement site, but just a test site with about 6 pages). I'm figuring ways to create an alternative that can cope with everything that is thrown at it DDOS included. Takes a bit of time I guess, and more when this place distracts me and steals all my time away.
The times square on I myself just don't get it as being anything interesting, it looks dull to me, but that's just me.
The image for the race is ok, I want to make one of those images where the arrow grows and moves over the map like a snake, the arrowhead moving along to each place. I think you've seen that kind of thing as well before. I want to do one of those, I have sufficient skills. Penyulap 17:12, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Arbitrary break

Thanks for considering the map project. How can commons block a feed to another site? We have links to sites like flickr etc. Is it a copyright/attribution thing? I just thought that if the ball image passed then it won't end up at the graphics lab again for foot removal etc. I am going to pop back and see If I can get the Playboy centerfold included in the Marilyn Monroe article as fair use in case I get blocked again.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:22, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Bah anything goes over there ;) they don't take fair use seriously.
They block it server side. Just add the website name to the list of sites not to send images to. It's good it happened when the site was so tiny though, it might have disappointed editors otherwise, if it happened later when there was content on the site. Now it's just something that is crossed off the list of things that can go wrong. Plus, it's an embarrassment for commons. Penyulap 17:27, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
I agree. They know little of images over there. I have seen long discussions to remove images that are actually on commons as public domain. A cute example that could easily be public domain and mess up our rules about some stamps. I found an image online of the 1953 Playboy issue that may not have a copyright. I emailed the seller to see if they would mind looking through it to check. See the thread at commons/pump/copyright. Can you keep changing website names to frustrate those that block them or would that be just a waste of time and costs?--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:05, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Criticism of the website is irrelevant, most sites have problems, but sites that suck as much as en.wiki does have a lot of problems. The wik suffers only from my neglect as it is not what I am after, I have/had been looking at servers and am learning programming when I'm not wasting time drawing asteroids (that's the one today, some asteroids) and playing computer games for the last hour, I'm terrible !!!
Images are not a problem, they can be sourced from a lot of different sites and mirrors or just uploaded to the site when i fix that. At the moment they can just fetch from flicker or on the front page i think i used the internet archive, It's hilarious is why I mention it though, I mean think about it, is the WMF so insane with paranoia over a site with half a dozen pages and users that they are shaking in their shoes figuring their replacement is imminent ? or is it just some nobody being spiteful from jealousy ? any way you cut it, it's funny is the reason I mention it. I think I should assemble the rest of that asteroid one now. Penyulap 22:25, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Programmer, eh? I have three ideas you may be able to profit from. Converting exported XML files from virtual worlds like Second Life for import into 3D editing programs like blender. Building in Second Life is fast and simple in 3D, the only problem is the objects are stuck in world. With 3D printing advancing as it is then a source for good models may be in demand. The other two are lottery schemes. Canadian lotteries are tax free. If someone opens a website where people can buy a share in blocks of tickets that have been chosen to increase odds of smaller wins, they could probably charge a 10% management fee to process them. There is software free on the net to print the ticket forms. If a program could be written in base 49 for the w:Lotto 6/49 that would find the largest 'block' of undrawn numbers, then print ticket forms in the center of that block then it should improve odds. Paypal could be used on the site free to a limit of $2500 free a month, I think. I may yet contact the main lotto office here in Edmonton to see if they will accept digital input instead of the ticket forms. The third is to have a program arrange all the 1176 possible pairs between 1 and 49 and stuff them into the lowest number of 6 number tickets. When 6 numbers are drawn there are 15 pairs. If two of these pairs are on one ticket, then that is a 4 digit match for a share of 2.75% of the prize pool. All the numbers drawn from June 12, 1982 are linked at the official website. I may digitize them in base 49 order some day.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:38, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

I thought we were pals, and now you're voting for my right to rename files be removed? And for what, because I put in a CommonsDelinker request? They're not even related. Fry1989 eh? 18:54, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Aww come on Fry, I was sure when they were by-passing talking to you on your usepage and not notifying you about the discussion and when I saw half the diffs (at least) were meaningless and the other half too hard to understand, that it must be one of those wiki-fraternity stunts where they sneak up behind you, pick you up off the ground and start flushing your head in the toilet. Look, I'm just not real good at it is all, I'm too polite, now I've been caught out, Dang ! Hmmm, I know it was wrong to vote to take away the tools, but if there is one thing that wikipedia teaches me it's that you NEVER EVER admit when you are wrong. you just go on looking for some chance to gang up and throw the person overboard at some point (sooner the better). Don't feel bad, why look at that professional photographer !! nothing wrong with his award-winning work, but he gets shafted doesn't he ? Happens to everyone with any talent or brains sooner or later. Yeah, hummm, yeah, you should really be thanking me cause it's sortof like a compliment that I voted that way, isn't it. Hey, why are you hassling me about it, you should be thanking me really, why, of all the ungrateful things, coming accusing me of doing what I did inste4ad of thanking me, I have half a mind to go and take it back again. Ungrateful so and so !! Penyulap 20:14, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Critique and invitation to an alternative wiki

http://wikipediocracy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=30583#p30583 – I've critiqued some of your contributions to Commons. I'm a sysop at Encyclopedia Dramatica. If a satirical image of yours is deleted, you're free to upload it onto ED. Your images are within ED's scope. ED has an article on Jimbo, so you're free to add your images to that article. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 02:39, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Actually, I did some digging, and the "Whambo.jpg" image violates copyrights: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Whambo.jpg&diff=91107061&oldid=91106661. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 03:05, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
Well the images I make and upload here are perfectly within scope too, the problem is using images on commons, some people think they are freely licensed, which is almost never the case. Makes no difference to me, I quite like the chance to refresh the image. It's getting like a monthly cartoon strip. Penyulap 03:22, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
Fixed that image, no legal problems with the GOAT in Jimbo's bedroom anymore. Didn't see much critique there, thanks for the invite. Penyulap 06:43, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
Alright. You're welcome. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 12:47, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Hey, I just had time to look over those comments again, and I notice that you (or sorry if it was someone else I can't recall) mention the Whambo image and the associations within the image. The image had to be patched up after the original one was changed. The original one had Jimbo in a mullet haircut, the sort of thing that might have almost passed as fashion when he was a teenager, it had context as far as the T-Shirt was brightly coloured with 'GO-GO WHAMBO' on it, a reference to a band and a song of the era, and the photo of princess Diana / george michael if you squint on the wall, along with the fan club thingy. I thought it quite amusing, and must have hit the spot as I got a barnstar for my efforts.

The image was deleted because of the haircut, it was uploaded by the now adult - then teenage boy who had the haircut back then. He had uploaded the picture of himself onto commons. Someone argued that he didn't have the photographers rights to his school photo, and efforts to contact him failed as he lives on a farm somewhere with his new family in a hippy-happy sort of way, and doesn't seem online nowdays.

I quite like the reasoning for the deletions, personality rights for a haircut and legal implications of having a GOAT in the bedroom... :) seems rather amusing in itself, a tabloid flavour to it. Penyulap 04:50, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

I do not know what information the map shows, which is inherent with the map showing a language I don't know, and me requesting a translation so I would understand it.
I wish I did, then I could just make the map myself without bothering anyone else, but I have absolutely no knowledge of Chinese characters. The map is displayed on w:Xin Dynasty, that's how I came upon it.

<grin> maybe, if it is just a dozen or so bottles keep it for yourself as it is not much. If they send a truck, or your weight in sauce, ok I'll have some. :D
so that you don't over-indulge which could be unhealthy of course, your gastronomic health is my top priority you see, I don't think of myself at all. Penyulap 12:48, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your concern. Just the face section should be fine and cropped for her infobox. Upload as a new file in case someone posts the full size without watermark. I may email her and see if she has a copy she wishes to use as well.--Canoe1967 (talk) 12:52, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
There is a LOT of work around the eye, probably hours for the image, it's better to wait and see how the emails go first, and if nothing comes of it, it would be good to get an opinion on the copyright of the image too, because it is quite an investment. The type of watermark makes a big difference it would seem, the last few I did were clean, not fuzzy and they were very definite colours. Still, I look forward to it, as I can think of some extra skills to add to my arsenal as far as adding a negative of another watermarked image to that one as a possible solution, and I don't yet know how to do that the way I would want to. Penyulap 14:23, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
I sent an email to her agent so no rush at this point. Copyright is public domain the same as many press photos we have on commons. If they show front and back of image without proper notice they are fine here.--Canoe1967 (talk) 15:59, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

But any/all of the ones of horses in harness and the ones of people riding sidesaddle are easy for anyone to spot and where we over at WikiProject Equine definitely are lacking images! I'll try to peek at others, the ones of the "weird" breeds like the Akhal-Teke or other rare ones (Heather would know which these are) would also be a priority. The big thing is to fix categories so they appear SOMEWHERE in the horse categories (even if people just categorize them as "horses" - many are not - that will at least get them somewhere that we who work in that area will realize they exist! Another map

Hey, there was a request on ar wiki i could not replay to, so i moved it here, if u can help when u have the time. Thanks--باسم (talk) 00:01, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

The image source is difficult to understand, as it mixes many kinds of data all in the same black and white colours. Are there extra sources, or can you describe the overall parts of the image, like the dot dash line is a travel path, so I figure we can change the colour of that, yes ? Can you point me to a satellite or colour map of the region so I can get an idea of the landscape ? we can add colours for features like rivers, some of those lines look like either rivers or borders that follow rivers, or are they just roads ? Penyulap 03:57, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

It has been made on ar. Wiki, and i moved the file here, look the map. sorry for the trouble. Anyway i have added 2 new maps here. The 1st have eluded me for a long time and i couldn't translate it, as for the 2nd i have translated it, but ruined some of it in the process cause i had to paint some layers. can help please--باسم (talk) 17:20, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
boundaries remain, text removed

I've made the blank one, I mention some extra fix that can be done at the FX lab. Penyulap 04:16, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

what about like this ? it's a bit big at the moment, I have to make smaller versions to fit the article, wikipedias won't create different size versions of images like this, I have to do it myself.

Of course, we have to add all the spots, plus, is it the right direction :D

oh, btw, if you use Internet explorer, it makes all animation like this suck by running them too slow. Microsoft is like that. Use firefox or chrome or something this century. Penyulap 09:01, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Good work!. The arrow thingy would work well for a canoe map. I still haven't found a decent base map to work with though.--Canoe1967 (talk) 23:08, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

RE: Hi Michaeldsuarez

I'm pretty much neutral now. I don't see how the image will be useful. As I've said earlier, if you want to preserve the image, you're more than welcome to upload it onto ED. Sorry, but I feel that File:Chinese_large_orbital_station.png is cleaner (transparent / white background, less fancy stuff) and more accurate. Nevertheless, I appreciate the time and effort that you've placed into File:中國空間站二.PNG. I can't draw anything like that. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 12:31, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

fair enough, but the point is that if both images can't be accommodated where more people have expressed a preference for my own, and a single person is removing it, then what is the point of making another, better, image ? It will obviously end up unused as well.
I can now draw space stations down to the last cable, bolt, and antenna. Animate them in video to match the commercial copyright non-free videos of the Chinese program, and it's all going to waste on wiki. The USA has no money or knowhow to have a space station any more, so after the ISS, there is just the Russian and Chinese stations which we can't have photos or videos of on commons. AT ALL. I have doubts that 2 dimensional sketches will impress the readers. I have my own websites, but my desire to write and illustrate spaceflight has been overtaken by my desire to learn programming, just as I have learnt drawing, so I can replace the project as a priority. My writing and drawing spaceflight doesn't beat everyone being able to write and draw without the sociopaths bullying them, the creeps mutilating their work, the interfaces that make it too hard to bother. Better I become at least as fluent in programming as I have become in drawing in the time I've been editing.

中國空間站二 is actually assembled using public domain components, when I saw what the government artist did, I figured I could do it better. The station on the government site has shadows on the solar panels from modules that aren't there. But I've moved far beyond requiring any assistance from other sources to assemble images like that, I can now do a better job single-handed I am pleased to say. Penyulap 19:35, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

I guess that you're right, but I'm currently banned from enwiki, so I can't voice my opinion there. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 00:05, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=block&page=User%3AMichaeldsuarez – ArbCom case. I created an ED article on an enwiki user, and they called it harassment. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 14:35, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Wow, impressive, actual discussion and stated reasons. My block which functions as a ban has nothing of the sort. The more you dig, the funnier it gets. Blocked for editing legitimately on commons (uploading poetry), blocked for having a Bot with a bot flag which passed the bot approvals process and is clearly marked as my own bot all over it's pages, and some arb couldn't work out who it belonged to without using the checkuser tool. The bot was already blocked indef, but he writes checkuser block in the log anyway, which is a bit much. He blocked me with talkpage access revoked for making a legitimate complaint against him. Then there was the time I got blocked for inserting a space into an article in order to make a null-edit. Some people don't know what a Null edit is, so figured to block me until they learnt. They still haven't learnt.

Some of the funniest stuff you've ever seen is over there. Some arb said it was ok to revoke everyone else's access to my talkpage to 'disperse the crowds'. Yeah, they really don't like consensus developing against them. Their opinions of the community itself, like calling them 'Kibitzers' is something you'd find good reading.

I think you'll find it enjoyable reading if you like laughs, en.wiki is so sad that it's funny :D Penyulap 19:44, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

I've sent the new ArbCom a message about your complaint. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 12:35, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Actually, when it comes to copy and pasting, there is some new let's all go to flickr thing. Looks like this when you use uploadwizard

I notice something said on the village pump that indicates only some users might be able to see it. I would have thought that anyone can cut and paste stuff from the web, but apparently maybe it takes some kind of a level of skill to read the license first, lolz, though I think more likely it's some beta test and will stay that way if there is no automatic license check.

Occasionally I look at the news headlines for stuff to draw, but the world is often a bit boring. I saw some story about a satellite colliding with space junk and drew the satellite, it's unusual, kind of like a blob of perspex, or a ball of clear plastic inside another ball of plastic, looks like this. It reflects laser light.

Not much inspiring stuff to draw, what kind of stuff do you want/need that you can think of ? I should re-caption that one that shows the number of new editors on en.wiki, but ah, I just thought there are those graphics with how lame the different arguments are, with each topic and the number of edits on those topics. Do you think there is a graphic like that we can make ? Or how appalling the spending of donations is ? I would figure work like that is the sort of stuff you want, but I don't know what stuff your board likes / uses. Penyulap 10:30, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

I am still trying to find a good canoe map of Canada for the arrow thingy. Do you have any?--Canoe1967 (talk) 15:31, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Don't start here so much as start by picturing what kind of final artwork you want to end up with, should tell me too, cause I am probably faster than most at searching and finding images, on account of I read and write visually, much to the annoyance of trolls. Penyulap 15:34, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Too late. I found File:BlankMap-USA-states-Canada-provinces.svg that may work. I may work with rivers added in blue, cropped to just the route, borders left in and the waypoints marked only. I will think on it more though, no rush.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:54, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
It will need to be converted to png or jpg before processing, so don't be worried if you want mountains and so on on it. I was thinking I should learn to map terrain in 3d better. I do have a lovely 'Earth', from out in space, flare from the atmosphere, cloud cover down low, city lights on the darkside, with the water of the sunny side reflecting just right. Those arrows can 'bounce' towards the camera like a skipping stone on water.. but that's probably way too much frills for a article pic I guess... Penyulap 18:01, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Never too many frills. I think you and I are the only ones that read the article anyway. Getting the rivers and waypoints on the map may be hardest. All the waypoints have geo data, I think. Would that list help?--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:06, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Well if it's just you and me, I know you like all the canoeing stuff, but the image might be the only thing to keep me awake so I better make it a good one don't you think ? Something very gawdy and loud :)
Actually the best thing out would be any kind of marking at all on any kind of map at all, a screenshot or anything that you could make with any program at all. That's the hardest part, adding all the different places from the list onto a map. There is an on-wiki tool that could help, an imagemap editor, I don't recall how to turn it on in preferences I think, or maybe in one of those java page sub user-pages. Penyulap 18:15, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Dapete/ImageMapEdit#English looks like a script you need to add.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:50, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

That's the one. I use that for userboxes on en.wiki here, the train I think and a lot of other places. It's not too hard to work out with trial and error, well, not TOO hard. if the image can be marked with that it would do. I can feed back in the data and screenshot that, load it into my software and presto, I can mark the places. Penyulap 19:07, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Stuff where MontanaBW needs Penyulap to remove watermarks

I'm making a list of images that I'm using in articles and thus need the watermarks stripped. I'll must keep adding to this as needed. If you want me to bug someone else, just holler. Montanabw (talk) 18:24, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

any more ? I probably am faster than Heather cause she has a life and I have the whole limited mobility thing going on. I don't mind being bugged. Penyulap 01:08, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Well, you know, all of them! (grin). But seriously, priorities will be either the ones I've already placed into articles on en.wiki, or images where we need more images in wiki. I'd say, prioritize these in the following order:
  • (All the other nice-quality photos of driving horses, full-body side or front shot, in harness with cart all visible, not blurred, would be helpful)

That should keep you busy! LOL! Montanabw (talk) 18:29, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Wow ! you're not kidding, but I am not sure, do you know that Heather has the unwatermarked images, she can upload many of these if the list is posted on her talkpage as well. But I can get to work as well :D Penyulap 18:34, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
I don't know, but if you want to drop her a line and ask her, that would be great. I'm up to my eyeballs in projects, RL and wiki-related. Montanabw (talk) 19:26, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
same, but I'll ask.. Penyulap 19:29, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
While you are there, making sure that all images have at least ONE horse-related category (either something obvious from the title, or at least Category:Horses) it would help. Montanabw (talk) 21:19, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
hey, I don't even get that far, I use the upload new version of this file link, I don't edit the pages... I try to spread myself thin to get the most done by doing what other people cannot do and not doing what they can do... generally. Penyulap 02:39, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Understood. Well, I've tagged above the ones that I've already put into articles, which is probably where the priority needs to be. Anything you can do to help is much appreciated. There must be about 600 images...most poorly categorized or miscategroized. YIKEES! Montanabw (talk) 18:03, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
I think that is two more, also, one doesn't seem to require removal, this one doesn't obscure anything, it's quite discreet and I'd figure it's better in than out, it's more a signature than any kind of protection, what do you think ?
There is a cropped and cloned version of this pic in it's edit history, we can ask for it to be split out, it's easier than removing the watermark and serves the same purpose for that article I think. Penyulap 13:57, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
See above. Some WP editors are super fussy about watermarks. OTRS notwithstanding, it would derail a GA or FA run. (You know how some editors can get) I think that the Half-Arabian one could just be cropped at the bottom, easier and just as effective. If we could also fix that last costume image (chestnut horse, blue costume) that one is a dandy too. Montanabw (talk) 13:16, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
ok, if some are up for ga or something please bold them for me. Heather has, and is happy to upload originals as well, so that had previously caused (and will occasionally) give me reason to pause for thought. I'll do some more for now, I'll remove it as an incorrect caption because it's not our friend Heather. :) Penyulap 13:23, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Need a quick prioritization of File:Equitation Class (2797696553).jpg. Just put it up as a lead article image, but it's in danger due to watermark still being there. Montanabw (talk) 20:38, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

✓[OK] Penyulap 21:04, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

SVG?

Do you edit .svg files? This one has an error that a rep from the company would like fixed. The small dot beside the c in McIlhenny should be under the c like the temp image I uploaded: File:Tobasco Sauce 2013 logo.jpg. They may pay in sauce, lol.--Canoe1967 (talk) 23:25, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Hmm, it depends on what kind of sauce, if we were talking ketjap manis in a reasonable quantity or some lovely yakatori, It'd be done already, but I'll look into it, but the Tabasco better be worth it :D Penyulap 23:40, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
hmph, I've done what I'd consider to be a stopgap solution to the Svg, I've moved the dot and reduced and moved the c, however I noticed that it's fair use and on en.wiki, where they have me blocked, so that prevents me uploading the image there, and as it is fair use then I can't upload it here, so unless you'd like it sent to you via email, which you're welcome to it, I can't see an easy solution. Penyulap 00:02, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Tabasco Sauce
asking at the gfx lab seems the obvious thing, also, someone can adjust the geometry of the rest of the text to the usual fastidious levels of svg editors. I have at the moment just basic svg skills, which just improved, maybe I should learn more, but I'm determined to learn website programming tools and languages first. Penyulap 00:06, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
It can probably be uploaded to commons. The article shows the same logo in a 1905 image so it should be PD. If someone slaps a DR on it that may be fun.--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:09, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

well, I'll just have to add him to the list of "don't hold your breath waiting for a reward from these guys" like barnstars from Jenova20 or John Carter. Unless of course the sauce is waiting in the afterlife, like the clay warriors or Nile riverboats. Hmm, maybe I should ask for more in the afterlife. Hmm, maybe I work on the Genghis Khan images.. Scope?

If someone were to take this file and overlay it to one from this cat would it be in scope for Easter?-- Canoe1967 (talk) 22:14, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

There is no link and there is no humour. I'm reminded of toilet humour, it's the most loved substitute for humour for people who have none, if you need to resort to potty words then you weren't funny in the first place. No, there is real humour and good clean fun to be had which offends no-one, it's just that on wiki it is hunted down to the ends of the project and beyond and killed with a zealousy and enthusiasm equal to the pain that levity causes for some people. Have you seen that movie Con Air ?
wow just looked at the article about the service depicted, and they have ten full-sized aircraft like this one. I wonder when it will get like those movies where whole cities are jails and there are drones everywhere ? the US is so alien. Penyulap 06:51, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
Easter is funny, it travels from dancing naked in the forest to church on Sundays to the local candy isle at the supermarket. I think we've been progressing backwards. Penyulap 09:59, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Question (24 March)

Hey. Sorry about taking so long with the map but I've been busy lately. Anyway i wanted to ask why the Assessment template in the featured photos on ar. Wiki appears gray while on other Wikis its orange. for example look at: this photo which is featured on ar. Wiki, and this one featured on fa. Wiki. Both are featured on just one wiki, but why does the Persian assessment template appears normal (orange) while the Arabic is gray? can you fix this? or guid me to some one who can? Thanks--باسم (talk) 14:51, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

on further examination, it is working correctly but not clear visually. The two images are featured pics according to two different projects. One is featured here and one is featured on ar.wiki. That gives rise to the different colouring. There might be a slightly different way to layout the template to make it easier to understand that. Maybe the logos of the different projects so the commons one comes up for one and the ar one for the other.
I think the source of the confusion is that the different logos are displayed vertically at the sides rather than horizontally the way people read. Penyulap 19:31, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
I fixed it! :-) thanks--باسم (talk) 22:30, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

The image has been history split so that everyone can be perfectly satisfied with their own version, and editors on each wiki may choose their favourite. This also means that an admin has looked at the reasons why the history split might have been warranted, and decided it was best. That's good, because it makes related admin actions regarding similar cases that pop up in future a little bit easier, so the next time an image needs splitting they already know most of the story. I don't find it quite as funny, because it detracts from another artists work I think. I think of the intentions of the original artist, and then I think, why go there, but that's just me. Penyulap 13:40, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
Oh, I just uploaded something very strange, I never thought I would make a porno, but meh, there it is. Penyulap 13:41, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
I think the Disney parody detracts from the Disney artists as well. That is why I may have my own printed and not pay $30usd for their smaller version for sale on the net. I may hang it in a local bar with a price tag on it of $50cdn depending on frame and print costs. Since it is a derivative work was parody then Disney cannot claim copyright. that's not funny, it just wastes admin time. (thinking of the good admins who do a lot of this like INeverCry for example) it just clogs up the DR pages. (there was a time I thought people did DR's to thrust my work into the spotlight though, like with the W:Innocent prisoner's dilemma but I'm not so sure that people do it for that reason, if you did, well I'm sorry. Though I still think it's not proper.) Penyulap 14:20, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, I take it back for this case, because it turned out to be a funny discussion and (almost) everyone seemed to enjoy it. Penyulap 21:04, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Regalia

Hi Pen, saw you at the debate over "costumes vs clothing." Just a heads up that when it comes to Native Americans, to call their traditional-style clothing a "costume" is really super offensive. Powwow dancers use the term "regalia." "Clothing" could cover the rest. To refine further is problematic, what makes something historic or traditional is probably edit war bait too. Just letting you know. (I'm not Native, but I live in a state with seven Indian reservations, so I have some knowledge of what gets people legitimately upset, anyway). What to do with white people dressing up to be Indians, that's a different problem. ([{Category: Non-native people pretending to dress up like Native people]]?) Smiles and hugs to you! Montanabw (talk) 20:37, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

thanks ! (smiles and hugz)
Yes, well I saw your comment a moment ago, and that confirms what a few people have now, that my initial thoughts that 'costumes' could be derogatory are correct. Though, I guess the idea can be applied to any real people. Penyulap 20:42, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
Yep. I suppose even things like someone dressing up like some other individual (thinking the rubber masks that look like various current or past presidents of the USA for example) carry with them the potential for mockery or satire, whimsy at the very least. Montanabw (talk) 21:24, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
I used to know Ernie Philip well. He may be still alive and I could phone him or his family for input. He was the best for many years.--Canoe1967 (talk) 04:06, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, consensus about "costume" seems to be to define a costume as something you wear when you are pretending to be something other than what you are. Thus, native clothing is NOT a "costume" because it is an expression of who that person actually IS. Canada and the USA have some different terminology. And calling someone you know is OR anyway. Also, one person from one cultural tradition may have different views than do other people in other traditions. (In other words, some people may have thrown up their hands on the "Indian costume" question or just don't care). However, if you want sources and evidence, I shall refer you to these few examples from multiple geographic areas (there are zillions more if you google): [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], some people consider wearing Native "costumes" to be as racist as white people wearing blackface, and examples, and even the Mardi Gras guys who dress like Indians (some of whom are, actually) don't like the term "costume". Montanabw (talk) 16:30, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

We need to move this conversation to the logical place to find it which will be the talkpage of Category:Costumes I would think. I've altered that page a little, a few extra alternative categories should be linked to at the top, to make it easy to find the most popular alternatives. Penyulap 16:49, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

I think the discussion is actually happening at the Village Pump; maybe your suggestion should be placed there. Maybe all that's needed is just some explanatory text on the category page. Montanabw (talk) 16:56, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
I was thinking to leave both, and we can copy the most pertinent parts, like those examples you link to, onto the category talkpage. When the discussion at the VP is finished, we should add links to it onto the talkpage. It is important that everyone who has said something can be have their comments found easily in the future. Penyulap 17:02, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
I've copied this conversation there, and we can add links or even copy from the vp, so later instead of trying to find it in the VP archives, people can just think category:costumes and get links and read everything there. Penyulap 17:30, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, it's still OR (smile) Bless him, but Ernie's web site sounds like he's a bit of a legend in his own mind (though probably a nice guy and all) and his supposed "Blackfeet name" and "Sioux name" sound a bit bogus to me, particularly as he is from British Columbia and claims Salish ancestry, so why does he need names from other tribes?! (LOL!) Practices in "other" countries are irrelevant here, as it's the Native People of the US and possibly Canada (maybe also Latin America, but there's a language issue and different cultures, so not going to go there) who are the ones who object to the word "costume". As far as the other issues, like WWE and such, I have no position. I do know that we can't violate the copyright law of various nations, which is a concern (and I think US law on FOP is dumb, but oh well), so I'll just duck that issue entirely! Montanabw (talk) 18:08, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
I mentioned Ernie at the Canada project on en:wp. I may create a stub on him and see if it survives AfD there.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:20, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Ping me on en wiki when you do; I'd say if you can find enough third party reliable sources beyond his own web site, and stay within the guidelines of WP:BLP (quick summary: source everything) I'd support you if there is a deletion spat. I mean, they keep stubs on guys who played cricket for one season in the 1980s for a team in Sri Lanka, for chrissake, so the notability standard is not that high! (That said, if you are not a male sports figure, preferably white, there seems to be a higher standard than for a male sports figure, however obscure. Go figure). Montanabw (talk) 18:48, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the offer. I may sneak it in on April Fool's when editors are keeping up with vandals. Here is my mention of it. If you really want to have fun on April 1, then goto the w:Got Milk? article and add a line: On April 3, 2012, this article was vanadalized with a picture of George Burns with the caption "Got cigars?" I may change the caption this year to "Got a life?" It lasted 3 days last year before reversion.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:39, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Reply et al

I only mentioned calling Ernie Philip because he is well known as an international native figure and can probably find opinions from many countries. The links above should suffice though. I had an idea last night after the massive deletion reviews for WWE trophy belts. I am not a wrestling fan but many are upset at en:wp because they will lose many good images for their articles. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Real WWE United States Championship.jpg I was thinking of a few options: We could create an image to place in the main infobox of articles for organiztions that refuse to respond to email on these images as a protest similar to the SOPA one. A big black square with a 'The subject of this article is being selfish and ignorant' type message in it. We could also create categories for sculptors that have provided permission for images of their works and those that have not. There was one DR that this actually happened with: Commons:Deletion requests/File:NewarkJustice1.jpg Sculptors may start jumping on the bandwagon to email OTRS with permissions. We could create a licence template for their categories like: Category:Anja Christine Roß with a statement that images of all their statues are allowed on commons if the OTRS licence states that. I have no problem with my statue images from Canada but the USA and other countries do not have FOP for 3D works. Thoughts? --Canoe1967 (talk) 17:42, 29 March 2013

well for the 'selfish and ignorant' thing you could use existing images, like but how can you do it without violating NPA? and then there is the moral question, that some people may not want their works sold by the WMF to potentially pay for lawyers to defend staff responsible for causing suicides, if that ever happens.
Those deletion discussions all seem proper to my eyes, I would do just what you've done there. Penyulap 17:57, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
I think most of the people in the wrestling project are upset at this. If they seek project consensus to protest with their articles and then take that to the village pump for approval then it may succeed. Each article may need a 'sticky note' at the top of talk pages to explain and provide input for the idea. If they included protest images in infoboxes like Hulk Hogan and others then the wrestlers them selves may notice and pick a side on the issue. If a wrestler sends an email to OTRS that he does want to have a protest image then that should override consensus to remove it. Any ideas on what the protest images should be if we do get consensus to move forward? I feel they should be harsh and effective but at the same time tasteful and acceptable to increase chances of getting consensus.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:20, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
I don't believe you can do that in articles, but anything goes over there now-days. I would figure the most obvious thing to do is what you do with any image in this situation, which is blank or blur the design in question. Just pop a few images into the FX lab and I can give you examples. I've done some similar things. Penyulap 18:33, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
I just made a quick sample for one of your skills to have a quick laugh at: File:Protest info image draft.png. I mentioned it at the wrestling project here: project talk page]. They are wondering if it can fly.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:58, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

You mentioned a self-requested block at AN/U; I don't know if there's any particular "line" on this on Commons (I can't find anything written), but I'm OK with the principle. You could post a request at COM:AN and see how that goes. Rd232 (talk) 19:37, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Well on en.wiki an admin called Bishonen does them and has a sub-page with her guidelines for them, it's of course important that the summary is correct, not saying something stupid, and that the duration is something I can't take back. They are a good idea I must say.
Though right now I don't feel any stress at all, I feel everyone is happy with me or concerned that I'm ok, that's the feeling that I get generally. I would have to make sure that I've tidied up any discussions that I have started off before taking a break, and need to check for artwork that needs uploading (I don't think there is any at the moment).
I should try to hunt down that subpage of Bish's for you. I think it is important that we have some admins consider the idea and provide it to the community because it would really help people who get too stressed. That is something we really do need, things that make it a safe working environment for all of us. Penyulap 19:48, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

"that he closed it for personal reasons"

No, I didn't do it for personal reasons. The sentence you quote without context simply means that I don't want to waste my time in discussing an issue I'm not interested in (unless you, who is really interested in it). My point is simply that the decision was clearly explained and that, as you haven't come to my discussion page for any explanation, you're not interested in getting any further explanation, but to escalate the issue. Therefore, I'll leave my fellow admins to make any decision on the undeletion of the picture. And BTW, my mention to the way you spend your time here is nothing but a rough analysis of this. You seem to prefer a constant discussion on almost anything. I don't (and I've been quite busy trying to sort out the mess that our friends of the WMF has created). And BTW, I didn't notice that the image belonged to a "barnstar", but if including an out of scope picture in a barnstar is a way to circumvent our policies on scope, it seems to me a clear case of en:WP:POINT. And that's all. Best regards --Ecemaml talk to me/habla conmigo 22:03, 5 April 2013 (UTC) PS: I'd suggest you to create a barnstar using this file. A text such as (sorry by my English) "I'm a volunteer. They aren't" would be nice.

Well as someone who has received one Barnstar in seven years, I don't think your going about getting another one the right way, people often go unnoticed for a long time, like Look2See1. Being friendly as well as competent is the key.
  • You're having an ongoing dispute with Tomas, whose Barnstar you deleted. example, and yet continuing to use the tools in an INVOLVED situation example.
  • Deleting things from his talkpage example needs to stop when you get to the awards.
  • If you have a problem because the WMF is rolling in cash, smiling for the cameras, drinking champagne, on $4,000 a week salaries and free concert and jet-plane tickets to everywhere, grants like tens of thousands of dollars to 'study editing', then I don't see how deleting people's Barnstars is going to effect anything. Can you help a total dweeb - me?

Penyulap, I don't appear to have the toys to make an .svg file save off of a .doc file without the damn border. SeeFile:Hennecke_chart_fat.svg, I uploaded a .jpg as a hack for now, File:Hennecke fat deposits.jpg, and maybe the .jpg is all that's needed. Anyway, any chance you could either get rid of the white border of the .svg or else give me the nod that the .jpg is good enough, even though it's a .jpg and the gods of charts swear we are only to do these in .svg?? Many thanks, whatever the result. Montanabw (talk) 22:47, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

don't use svg at all for that picture, it is unsuitable and makes the file way larger. Use Jpg or PNG. If you wanted to have the circles over the top done in svg, then you'd use an overlay, however there is no reason at all in this case because the image is only useful in a non-thumb format. There is no need for improved readability at a tiny thumb size. Just stay in Jpg for sure. Penyulap 22:53, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

It is part of my push to get more images under a free licence as well as change the FOP laws in the USA. I just tried to remove the 'skip to bottom template' at the top of this page but broke something and reverted it. Feel free to remove it so others can read your message.--Canoe1967 (talk) 01:23, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
It's ok, message and skip to bottom both look good in my browser. I can't recall where my mobileviewing tool is, but don't worry bout it. Is good. Penyulap 01:34, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
I put the skip template up there a while ago. I thought you noticed then. It may take a while but I think eventually the USA will allow FOP. The more images we delete from the projects, the more readers will wonder why. "But the Batmobile was here last week Ma! Honest! Why is it gone now Ma! This is 'Merica and the Batmobile is 'Merican, why did WMF delete it! WMF is 'Merican! Tell Daddy to vote against the WMF!!! Are you allowed to vote too, Ma?"--Canoe1967 (talk) 01:45, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
I saw it, I don't mind it at all. Well maybe a template can explain to them why and that there is hope for the future and give them the home and mobile phone numbers of the appropriate congressmen as well. Penyulap 03:11, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

w:David Ferriero really likes us. He has at least one faction on commons. Should we contact them for thoughts about FOP changes in the US? They probably have many statue images they would like to upload. We may get a political 'feeling' about whether this is a big or un-heard of issue in the Excited States.--Canoe1967 (talk) 03:29, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
