First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Flickr images[edit]

Yes you are surely allowed to rotate an image under a CC license (with the exception of the ND variants, but those aren't allowed on Commons). The fact that the image is reuploaded rotated is probably due to the fact that the image was rotated by Flickr's thumbnail generation. I have tagged the image for lossless rotation. -- Bryan (talk to me) 14:56, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flag[edit]

Says it all really! Give someone a shout if you need to - cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:16, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I tend to wander so I picked some bits up. And stick around Commons if you don't like en wp (I am not a big fan) :) I'll see what I can do and it is on the watchlist now, cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:25, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Idiocy[edit]

[Idiocy redcated]

So you don't know the difference between a billboard and a mural? Says it all..... One Night In Hackney 16:44, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Difference is not so big from point of view of copyrights law. See Commons:Derivative works for details. --EugeneZelenko 16:49, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Blah, blah, blah. Should have known you couldn't actually explain it (wonder why?), instead I get a generic message to a page I already knew about. Crack on with the message on your talk page anyway! One Night In Hackney 16:51, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please address you question to Commons talk:Licensing. Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#United_Kingdom is not clear about murals. --EugeneZelenko 16:54, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So, you deleted my image claiming it's a copyvio while admitting you're not clear whether it was a copyvio in the first place? It's this simple - either restore my image or delete the rest as you can't have it both ways. One Night In Hackney 02:55, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So, let's summarise. You delete an image claiming it's a copyright violation. When asked to actually explain exactly why it's a copyright violation you can't actually explain it. Then when I point out that there's many, many images that are of exactly the same copyright status you do absolutely nothing? That sound about right? Idiots about[edit]

Again - sprot. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 14:43, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. It's this banned editor and prolific sockpuppeteer from en, who doesn't seem to like being banned very much.... One Night In Hackney (talk) 15:15, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
