First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Houzhaofang in Guo Moruo Memorial.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. --Filnik 19:12, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the first version is a wrong photo. I uploaded a second version and there is GFDL tag in it. I don't know why the new version is still invisible. Probably just wait for some time and the new version can be seen. Thanks.--Neo-Jay 19:17, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I suppose it's a cache problem ;) Now seems ok. --Filnik 15:21, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
File:US Presidents by state of primary affiliation.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Mr. Guye (talk) 20:39, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Mr. Guye: Thanks for your notice. An outdated file can be updated. And even if it is not updated, it can be simply unlinked in relevant Wikipedia articles. There is no reason to delete a file for it is just outdated (see Commons:Deletion policy). Otherwise all historical maps should be deleted. I have posted my comment at the deletion request page. Thank you. --Neo-Jay (talk) 04:35, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr. Guye: FYI, I have uploaded a new version to reflect the 2017 Trump presidency although I do not have to do it. Thank you. --Neo-Jay (talk) 07:08, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. jdx Re: 11:04, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jdx: Many thanks! Sorry that I reply late. Because of the Chinese Great Firewall (I am in China), I had been unable to access Wikimedia Commons and other Wikimedia sites since 1 December 2019. I am using a VPN now.--Neo-Jay (talk) 17:48, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

Empty shelves during 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak in the United States has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Eissink (talk) 21:25, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Eissink: I have fixed the multiple redirect issue. Category:Empty shelves during 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak in the United States is a redirect category that is the result of multiple moves. It should be kept because "if the old category name is a correct old or synonymic or alternative name of the subject or a correct expectable name for such a category, it should be marked with a {{Category redirect}} template permanently" (see Commons:Rename a category#Should the old category be deleted?). I have posted my opion at Commons:Categories for discussion/2020/03/Category:Empty shelves during 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak in the United States. --Neo-Jay (talk) 22:33, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Eissink: Category:Empty shelves during 2019–20 COVID-19 pandemic in the United States was moved to Category:Empty shelves during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States per the discussion on Category talk:COVID-19 pandemic by country and territory. This old category should be kept because "if the old category name is a correct old or synonymic or alternative name of the subject or a correct expectable name for such a category, it should be marked with a {{Category redirect}} template permanently" (see Commons:Rename a category#Should the old category be deleted?). I have posted my opion at Commons:Categories for discussion/2020/03/Category:Empty shelves during 2019–20 COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. BTW, hundreds of categories were moved per Category talk:COVID-19 pandemic by country and territory. It's really unnecessary to ask for deletion of these old categories (like this, this, and this). I hope that I would not receive your hundreads of deletion notices on my talk page.--Neo-Jay (talk) 22:33, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that's fine by me also. Didn't mean to give you trouble and I didn't know old Categories have to be kept even if they are empty and obsolete. It was just that someone had assigned the 3-redirect Category to a file and I had gotten tired of all the messy renaming lately already. Greetings, Eissink (talk) 22:40, 21 March 2020 (UTC).[reply]
@Eissink: Thanks for your reply. I thought that bots would fix the double redirect issue automatically. Probably it would take a long time before a bot fixes it. --Neo-Jay (talk) 23:15, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Republic of Ireland[edit]

Hi, sorry for my changes – I didn't notice the discussions Commons:Categories for discussion/2018/04/Category:Ireland and Commons:Categories for discussion/2018/08/Category:Ireland and their conclusions. The confusing problem is that Category:Republic of Ireland has not developed yet its own fully structure of subcategories – and maybe, the whole Ireland inherited some subcategories which were originally meant for the Republic of Ireland. Generally, Commons use some simplifying or distorting terms, e.g. "American" form "from the US", "China" for PRC, "Cyprus" for the republic of Cyprus, formerly also Macedonia for the Republic of Macedonia (now Northern Macedonia) etc. However, the Republic of Ireland category misses subcategories related to health, epidemics etc. This categorization structure needs to be built. --ŠJů (talk) 13:08, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ŠJů: Thank you for providing the two discussion links, which I actually had not known before my reverts (e.g., this and this). I agree that some subcategories of Category:Republic of Ireland are missing and need to be created. Thanks for your contributions. --Neo-Jay (talk) 17:00, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We need your feedback![edit]

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
