Thanks for the Christmas review![edit]

Hi Muhammad Mahdi Karim/Archive2. I would like to thank you for the interest you have shown in my request for adminship, and for the time you have taken to review my profile. As a Christmas present I've just been given the admin tools, for which I'm thankful as well. I have understood all the remarks that have been made during the review period. I will take them into account and begin using the tools with much care, until I gain more experience and self-confidence. Thanks again, and Merry Christmas! --Eusebius (talk) 15:12, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Clean up your discussion[edit]

Hi Muhammad Mahdi Karim,
May you want to clean up your discussion page, because it's really big (70kB). If you do so, don't just remove them. Copy them into an archiv as you can see it on User talk:Aka.
The use of it is that the page is smaller (which is good, because you save the whole page even if you just edit a word) and because you find things easier.
Contact me if you have any questions.

Flash lighting and more[edit]

Dear Muhammad,

first off all ... put aside your flash :-) you don't need it, belive me. On daytime you allways have enought light available - so that's the name of the game: Available light photography which works best with insect macros. Even without a flashlight you can cause overexposure especially on the wings or bristles. To avoid that experienced photographers allways have a shade (similar to a reflector but semitransparent - womens stockings or silk paper) and reflectors with them.

Diptera.info is the best source you can find for identifying flies and other insects. Sometimes it lasts a bit, but with a bit of patience you will all your critters have be identified. If you are interested in seeing good macros and having a benchhmark you should visit this site. It's in german but for surfing in the galleries it should work with no german skills.

Right now there are -10 degrees Celsius here in munich and the insects taking a nap until april or march - until then I review FP candidates :-) .

Best regards Richard --19:47, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

  • I'd agree with Richard in that you need to improve your lighting. As you know I am not an insect photographer. I'd expect that Richard either goes shooting at a time of day when the insects are cold and not moving too much, or sedates them. However, there are many ways to skin a cat and flash photons aren't really different to natural light photons. You will also get far superior results with a flash bracket and perhaps a softbox. The off-axis flash method would also have a considerably higher probability of a sharp shot, and you don't have to mess around with tripods and so on. I think I even mentioned when you were shopping for macro lenses that the lighting was at least as important as the lens.Noodle snacks (talk) 13:22, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cycad cone[edit]

About File:Cycad cone.jpg I have been looking at so many scans of PD-old plant paintings. The paper has faded into the color of that cone and the leaves painted probably originally more green inks have turned more blue throughout the last more than one hundred years since they were printed, blue like the leaves in that image.

It is all I can do to not make almost the same color adjustments to that image as I am to the old paintings I have been working on.

Are you certain that the cone is that color of yellow/pink and the leaves are so blue as are in this photograph?

This is an apology kind of, for my eye right now and the feeling I have to alter the colors in that image. -- carol (talk) 01:34, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bellow[edit]

Ogonile Muhammad, A bellow is only a adjustable spacer ring. You have to buy a very expensive one when you like 2 transver the camera functions to the lens, otherwise you get feature restrictions with time-consuming adjustments. He's big and bulky but you can reach a larger image ratio, thats for shure. I would - if not having a MPE65 - prefer simple spacer rings (Kenko 1,4x Teleplus Pro 300 DG, Kenko 1,5x Teleplus MC DG) or a reverse mounted lense. Ask Alves Gaspar, he has experience with spacer rings in macro photography and did it well and ask User:Kevincollins123 the author of that picture which is done by a reversed mounted lens and a focusstack. Cheers, Richard Bartz (talk) 15:21, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, there is no limit. But every s-ring decreases sharpness and f-stop. --Richard Bartz (talk) 20:14, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A kenko extension tube (different to teleconverters) set will get you to 1.68:1 on the sigma 150 apparently. Noodle snacks (talk) 00:07, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of use of a valued picture[edit]

Dear Muhammad Mahdi Karim,

First, thank you for making your Kaa'ba image available on Wikimedia.

On Friday, 3 April 2009, at 9:00 AM Hong Kong time(UTC+8), I have a blog posting going up on http://e-cuneiform.blogspot.com/ which includes your image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kaaba_mirror_edit_jj.jpg, unedited, with both alt and mouseover attributions giving full attributions (description, description of rightsholder, source, and license.) I am wanting to be exceptionally careful because of the sacred nature of the image for so many.

You asked to be informed of uses of your image and I am respecting your request.

If you have concerns, please let me know, although I will be traveling in India for a peripatetic wedding and it will take me a few days to receive messages and make any changes.

I can think of no reasons why you would be unhappy with the usage of the image on the relevant blog posting and, if I am wrong, I will make all reasonable changes as swiftly as possible.

Best regards, Chris

I wanted to let you know I've used your picture of a Dik Dik looking for the background to some training materials I intend to send to people via email, and use in classes/workshops. They may, at some point, be made available online on our training page, in which case I will let you know about the new distribution format.

The material involves explaining what a reference file is, and the picture was chosen because the dik dik looks curious about something.

Hello Muhammad,

For this map, I said I'd be happy to do the translation. I think English will be OK for me (there are enough reference maps around), but for Swahili I could do with some help. Would you be interested? I am doing it for another map (File:Haiti topographic map-fr.svg) where a Creole speaker is giving me the Creole names and I will translate the map.

Do you think you can have access to a good reference for the Swahili names for Tanzania ? If so, what I could do is send you a table of all names to be translated and you could maybe fill it in, and then I translate the map?

If you are interested please let me know. Asante! le Korrigan bla 21:14, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Muhammad,

Well, there is no easy answer for night events.

First of all, some events require flash photography. The best tip I can offer here is to shoot in horizontal format (landscape) in order to avoid the side shadow that the flash produces when shooting vertical format. Generally, flash light provide very flat light, but when it is the only source, that´s what you get.

Second, with flash photography, watch out for objects in the first plane (front of photograph) because the automatic exposure will give you a reading based on those subjects, and not where you want the light. So try to get your subject with nothing in between you and him/her.

If the subject is very important and the opportunity to shoot low, the priority is in getting a good, well exposed photograph, even if the lighting (flash) is not the greatest.

Once you know that you have assured a good picture with good exposure, use aperture priority mode in your camera, select the largest aperture, and get a shutter speed reading, and adjust your ISO speed so that your shutter speed is 1/60 or higher, and brace yourself so you don´t get camera shake and blurr, especially when using large focal lenses.

So the secuence is:

1. Flash in horizontal mode. 2. No obstructions between camera and subject. 3. Existing light in Auto Exposure Mode with an ISO speed that will give you 1/60 or more... 4. Shoot, shoot, shoot...

I hope this helps.
