some of the files have the author as 's on the end if you see that please correct. Im trying to fix them all but I might miss a few. Dec 10 2009 - I think I have gotten them all now.

Audubon[edit]

Hello,

This Audubon series is a great upload! Did you know that some of Audubon's birds are already present in Category:The Birds of America ?

Consequently, I changed the category on File:275 Noddy Tern.jpg. I also identified the species. According to this page, there are two different possible species for "Sterna stolida", the black and the brown noddy. As this one looked black I classified it into Category:Anous minutus.

Don't you feel files like File:275 Noddy Tern.jpg ought to be cropped in order to see the picture and caption better ?

Teofilo (talk) 03:08, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't realize that some of the birds where uploaded already. As for cropping it would probably be a good idea. They are 1:1 scans right now but I don't see why one would need a bunch of white space. When I get Time I will replace them with cropped versions. Sanguinsoftware (talk) 03:27, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I could not help myself with the cropping because these files are probably bigger than my computer can handle. I thought it might be possible to ask for help at Commons:Graphics village pump if help is needed. Teofilo (talk) 04:14, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah the files are pretty big.. unfortunately the they are too big in original png format so I had to convert to jpg for this site. Cropping would probably be better done on those so its not going: original scan -> jpg -> png ->jpg ->jpg as it is it has already gone two jpg conversions. Also if anyone knows of a more or less automatic way to crop them please let me know, preferably some way in linux, doing it manually will take me awhile. Oh and is there a way to edit meta data on files more than one at a time? Possible a third party program?, new to wikimedia. Finally is there a way to append my user name to these edits or is it all manual? Same question about edit time.

Please upload the original tiffs or pngs[edit]

Dear Sanguinsoftware , the files you have uploaded (from Birds of America ) are really great, however, could u please also upload the uncompressed files? These would help when we restore the images. Thank you.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 16:16, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop your upload[edit]

Dear Sanguinsoftware, please stop your upload. There are some things still to be cleared. Th description and categorization need fixing. Reply here as soon as possible.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 16:20, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ok for the categorization/ description what can I fix. As for the original tiffs / pngs they are 150 to 300 megs to large to upload >100 meg limit Sanguinsoftware (talk)

All the images should have Category:The Birds of America in them. The source parameter should have the direct link for the file, for example, File:70 Henslow's Bunting.jpg should have http://images.library.pitt.edu/cgi-bin/i/image/image-idx?view=entry;cc=audimg;entryid=x-aud0070 as a link in the source. The category "Birds, art, north america" should be removed from all images. In the description it should state the page number and the name of the subject. For example in File:70 Henslow's Bunting.jpg the description should have "Page 70 of Birds of America by John James Audubon depicting Henslow's Bunting". The permission field should be left empty. Before the information template you should have the BookNaviBar2. For File:69 Bay-breasted Warbler.jpg it's 68 Republican or Cliff Swallow.jpg so there would be an arrow forward and backward to each page. For your next upload (after the whole book) please have the numbers of the pages after the name and with the books name. For example "Birds of America 70.jpg" or "Birds of America 70 Henslow's Bunting.jpg" . You should also try to add specific categories to the files (which is mostly manual work) for example "Dendroica castanea" for File:69 Bay-breasted Warbler.jpg . I applied all the changes to File:69 Bay-breasted Warbler.jpg as an example. You can see the difference here. --Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 19:08, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help ill get to changing the meta data. Is there any tool I can use or just browser to edit?

I'll take care of the previous images u uploaded. Just apply the changes to the next ones please :)--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 19:18, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You sure, well thank you didn't mean to cause extra work.

Please don't upload restoration over the files[edit]

Please upload File:278_Schinz's_Sandpiper.jpg the restored version under a new file name like File:278_Schinz's_Sandpiper restored.jpg. So that in the future others can improve from the loss-less.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 19:43, 11 December 2009 (UTC)--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 19:43, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks :) --Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 05:32, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1-30 Meta info done[edit]

I corrected 1-30s meta info all but the individual bird name categories Sanguinsoftware (talk) 14:50, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good :) But could u apply this to the files you are uploading? I mean why not change the descriptions before uploading?--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 14:24, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

i've changed what I can and put place holders in for what I can't, unfortunately commonist doesn't let me put individual information per file other than description Sanguinsoftware (talk) 14:35, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Instead of putting place holders why not change the description in each file ? I mean u can copy paste and just change. I wonder how u managed to get the jpeg files? You can request a batch upload from Commons:Batch uploading however it might take time (months) since it's really backlogged.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 14:57, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A few further remarks[edit]

Hello again,

I have tried to improve File:278 Schinz's Sandpiper restored.jpg's description page a little :

 • page --> Plate (I think a plate and a page are two slightly different notions, so it is better to use "plate", like in the original)
 • Birds of America --> The Birds of America (I think "The" is necessary, like you say in other book titles : "The New York Times", or "The Merry Wives of Windsor")
 • Original caption : I think the full original caption is necessary. It provides useful information to categorize the picture. Because of the comment "View on the East Coast of Florida", I could categorize into category:Birds of Florida and category:Coasts of Florida. Of course, I also added the species' category : category:Tringa schinzii which I created (it is the first time we have a picture of bird from that species) and inserted that category into the genus' category : category:Tringa.
 • Author : I think the engraver's name (located on the file in small prints below the picture in the lower right corner) is important. It also provides the date of the engraving (1835). It is important also to write "Drawn from nature by" because it testifies that that bird was there when Audubon visited Florida, and that the landscape really looked like that at that time.

done

here is the info if any one wants to help copy and paste it into each file or if anyone knows of a way to do it programmatically

A way to move this[edit]

ps is there a way to move this ↑ to its own file or something Sanguinsoftware (talk) 03:59, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you need space, you can create additional user subpages, like User:Sanguinsoftware/Script or User:Sanguinsoftware/Sandbox1, User:Sanguinsoftware/Sandbox2. You can also create archives for your talk page like User talk:Sanguinsoftware/Archive1, User talk:Sanguinsoftware/Archive2, moving older talks there, so that your talk page remains small. Teofilo (talk) 17:47, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks thats just what I was looking for. Here is the Meta info now for the gallery [Metainfo] Sanguinsoftware (talk) 23:00, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sanguinsoftware,
could you try to re-upload this File:116 Ferruginous Thrush.jpg image? The page is empty. --Túrelio (talk) 15:47, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading right now Sanguinsoftware (talk) 02:27, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Filling in missing bird images right now should be finished soon with all of them. Sanguinsoftware (talk) 23:43, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mturtle!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Image File:83 House Wren.jpg now has a rotated subversion[edit]

Hello Mturtle,
I've saved a rotated version of the inner plate here:

I've not replaced the original. I think, the original's orientation is the "correct one" -- look at the birds droppings on the hat and the staggering of the cubs!
