Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Categories[edit]
The category system of WIkimedia Commons is totally different from the "tag" system of, for instance, Flickr. Please place your uploads in the most specific possible categories. In the case of your uploads, please place them in sub-categories of Category:New Zealand. For example, don't place a file into Category:Fishing but into Category:Fishing in New Zealand. This makes it easier to find for people who are looking for fishing in New Zealand.
Also, if you have already placed a file into Category:Whanganui River, you should not also place it into the main category Category:Rivers. Please read COM:CAT and COM:OVERCAT for more information about how the category system works here in Wikimedia Commons. - Takeaway (talk) 13:25, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
Your recent uploads from Flickr[edit]
MsWaverley, I reviewed your recent pictures uploaded from Flickr, and in absence of source, I found all of them and the license is still valid. So, please be sure to provide the exact source where you found these pictures; you can use the transferring tools like Flickr2Commons to ease the uploading from Flickr to Commons. --Amitie 10g (talk) 21:33, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
