First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Pachycephalosaurus-01-ZOO.Dvur.Kralove.jpg[edit]

Hi. Could you have a look again at this deletion request and comment on whether FOP can extend to the inside of a museum, please? My reading of the wording is that it extends only to public places of a type similar to squares, streets, parks etc which would exclude places where the public has to pay to enter such as museums. Biodiversity Photo[edit]

Hello Mistvan,

My name is Rita Neves.

I work in Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, that is a Public Organism in Portugal. Actually, we are working on a road book of Biodiversity of Lisbon, for which we are going to produce a panel and a brochure. We found your photos on Wikimedia Commons and liked specially one of them very much, so we would like to know if you could allow us to use your photos, for free, to publish on this project, knowing that the brochure of will be for free distribution to everyone.

Photo usage[edit]

Hi, I'm working on an educational videogame with which I'm trying to build a bridge between animal awareness and Pokemon fans among others. It started out as something small and I talked to you before, but it's getting bigger and more professional so I wanted to know if you were ok with it. Also, because I want to make sure there's no misunderstanding, you are the original photographer correct? It sometimes happens that another person simply takes a picture from somebody else and uploads it to wikipedia with a license to distribute. That is why I'm asking.

I am helping to write Kenyan conservancy euthanises last male northern white rhino at Wikinews,

What is the name of this rhino? Is it Sudan? Could you please give the zoo a call +420 499 329 515 in the local language and ask them to confirm, or to provide a photo of the Sudan rhino for this news story.

They can send the photo to me, as they should already have a message from me (svetlana@members.fsf.org) in their mail box info@zoodvurkralove.cz, I would then upload the photo to Commons (or they can upload it to Commons themselves but then you need to teach them how to upload)
