Removing football players from Ilves players category[edit]

Hello there! You are removing football players from category "Ilves players". Why? FC Ilves went to bankrupt in late 90's and that name doesnt exist anymore. Nowdays we have main club Ilves (which takes part in football, futsal, ringette and floorball). Ilves Hockey OY is an limited company which uses same logo etc and they have an ice hockey team. In my opinion football players should be in "Ilves category". If you dont want to mix those with hockey, then hockey players should be moved to "Ilves hockey player" category. --BEAT (talk) 06:41, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for stopping to chat, and my apologies for being unable to speak Finnish. All I wanted to do was separate the football players from the hockey players, as they have separate category structures for teams as well as players (ie, this category for football players in Finland and this one for SM-liiga hockey players.) I don't want to favor hockey over football or vice versa, so I looked through the various Wikipedia articles to try to see how they were distinguished from each other, and it looked to me that some articles referred to the football team as "FC Ilves" (such as the French and Lithuanian articles demonstrate). However, none of the articles on the hockey team used anything like "HC" in their titles. As a resident of Tampere and a photographer of Ilves players, you obviously know much more about the club and its supporters than I do, so I think you should make the call on what to call each team. Perhaps we can then change "Category:Ilves" to a parent category into which the hockey and football teams (and perhaps the futsal, ringette, and floorball teams at a later point) can be categorized: a good example is provided by the category for CSKA Moscow. One point in terms of naming, however: football uses the format "Players of TEAM NAME" while hockey uses "TEAM NAME players", as you can see with the first two category links (for football players and SM-liiga players) that I gave. As long as we obey those precedents, "TEAM NAME" can be anything you think is fair. Just let me know and I will be more than willing to do all the category changes for you with Cat-a-lot. Thanks again and take care! --Michael Barera (talk) 21:02, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

The only thing I can do is to thank for recognition. I am very satisfied and I will still contribute a lot. --Bruno-ban (talk) 10:12, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Category:Ubuntu_fonts has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Thanks for the Barnstar[edit]

Hello,

Thank you for adding the barnstar to my page. Altering the colors was no big deal, I was experimenting with a new free program, Picasa, another editor told me about on WP. I was hoping to get a lot of the common yellowing cleaned up from the ice hockey images but have fallen off on that goal. Anyways thank you for uploading all of those images. Cheers--Leech44 (talk) 20:42, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Boston streetcar 2001.jpg[edit]

Do you happen to remember where you took File:Boston streetcar 2001.jpg? I would like to sort it into the proper Green Line branch, but there's no destination sign nor identifiable buildings in the photograph for me to backtrace. Even if you only remember the approximate location, or even just which branch (B,C,D,E) it was, that would be awesome.

(Respond here; I'll watch your talk page.)

Cheers! Pi.1415926535 (talk) 16:51, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Great question: I was 11 years old at the time, it was my only visit to Boston, and I unfortunately did not keep detailed notes, so I'm really not sure. The only clue I have is that the next picture I took was of Fenway Park, so I think it was somewhere in the vicinity. I'm sorry that I can't be more helpful. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 00:41, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and no problem. I suspect it might be Fenway station, but it'll just have to be a mystery. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 05:03, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding categorization of FOSS typefaces[edit]

Hi Mike! Given that I noticed your reply on this discussion almost a month later, I preferred to respond here.

I think creating Category:Free and open source typefaces (may have another name) is a good idea, and I embrace your idea of making subcategories for distros. For example: images of Ubuntu Font Family could be categorized into “Category:Free and open source typefaces” and a child category called, for example, “Free and open source typefaces in Ubuntu”; and images of Fifth Leg can be in “Free and open source typefaces in openSUSE”, Cantarell in “Free and open source typefaces in Fedora” and so on. These names are long, though. —Fitoschido [shouttrack] \\ 16 October, 2011 [06:26]

That sounds good, but to shorten things up we could perhaps call the child categories "Ubuntu typefaces", "openSUSE typefaces", etc. If you're okay with it, perhaps I could go ahead and create the category and subcategories? Michael Barera (talk) 17:20, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please go ahead, that’s sounds nice to me Fitoschido [shouttrack] \\ 19 October, 2011 [03:59]
Alright, I have just created the parent category, but I can't find any openSUSE typefaces to put into it, so right now it just contains the Ubuntu Font Family files. Please go ahead and add as many other typeface samples as you want to! Michael Barera (talk) 03:16, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

D.C. United photograph categories[edit]

Hey Michael, I noticed you removed numerous categories from all the images I uploaded to the commons, which I had listed here. Would you mind explaining your edits? ~ Fopam (talk) 00:49, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In a word, redundancy (take a look at COM:OVERCAT for the details): for instance, most of your images were of players, for example take File:Ngwenya-crew-rfk.jpg. The image is of one subject, Joseph Ngwenya, so it should be categorized under his category (as it is). Now, take a look at each of the categories I removed, and I'll explain why each was inappropriate:
  • Category:D.C. United - Redundant, because the Ngwenya category is within the DC United players category, which is within this category
  • Category:Columbus Crew - Inaccurate, because the image does not depict anything that has to do with the Crew
  • Category:Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium - Inaccurate, because the image does not depict the stadium itself
  • Category:Major League Soccer - Redundant, because the Ngwenya category is within the DC United players category, which is within the MLS players category, which is within this category

I hope this makes sense. Michael Barera (talk) 02:05, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PS: thanks for uploading all those photos, they're really quite good! Michael Barera (talk) 02:08, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the thorough explanation. I assumed that the inaccuracy, as you describe it, was one reason, but I didn't realize the categories were contained in a hierarchy. I'll go over them and fix any mistakes.
Yah, I was really happy that the photographers were so willing to change the licensing and provide copies without watermarks!
Thanks again, ~ Fopam (talk) 02:14, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem: it takes a while to get used to the categorization structure, but once you do it really works well! Michael Barera (talk) 02:16, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks.[edit]

Thanks for further categorizing the many pictures I put in the categories "Association football" and "American football". These were uncategorized before and I enjoy knowing that images are sorted correctly. Badzil (talk) 11:28, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely! I actually clear out those categories (and a few more) once a week. Just out of curiosity, because there were many more than usual there this week, where did they all come from? Were you doing some serious work in the uncategorized media backlog? Michael Barera (talk) 16:59, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I started using Google to track down uncategorized images that contained keywords associated with football. The query I used was site:commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File +"Media needing categories" football (Google). Badzil (talk) 17:12, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that sounds like a good technique (and one I was unfamiliar with before now)! Thanks for the tip! Merci! Michael Barera (talk) 17:14, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for helping![edit]
