Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Re: Israel relief location map-blank

Hello.
What kind of error do you have ? I didn't see any.
Also: I don't understand why you created an exact copy of file:Israel_relief_location_map-blank.jpg, just with another name? Why not just use the original file?
If a blank map avoids any dispute about what is where, it doesn't show the reality of the area. Because of that, I think File:Israel_relief_location_map.jpg has the most neutral point of view as it shows the official boundaries and the disputed/occupied areas. One may not agree about their legitimacy but that's not in question here, the purpose being to show the reality of the situation. But that's another question which should be solved between contributors.

Thanks for the response. If you look at the discussion on it in the Jerusalem Talk page, you'll see why editors didn't like a map showing the reality on the ground, which I agree with you about, but they rather demand a map that doesn't support Israel's political position on current borders. It's an unfortunate and misplaced political battle as I tried to explain. But we are at an impasse and need to improve that map situation. I changed the name of your map so it doesn't say Israel in it, because a main argument is that Jerusalem is not in Israel alone. They'd prefer a map named "Israel and the occupied territories" and emphasis on the 67 borders, not the annexation borders. I thought the map name, "Dead Sea terrrain" would overcome this politicization and we could live with it not showing any borders, just for general location.

I inserted the map name "Dead Sea terrain" into the "pushpin_map" field in the Jerusalem page infobox, using the same method I saw in the location map naming (excluding the words "location map"). I continue receiving the following error instead of the map in the preview: (please look at the edit box of this message as the code hides most of it).

It seems there's something I may not understand about the template, but your original map works there fine with the same method. The only problem is that it inserts the border map along with it and is named "Israel".

A map like this one would solve the problem because it emphasizes the 67 borders, but it is not a location map which this template needs. I also think it's aesthetically ugly and overburdened with unnecessary details.

Frankly I don't see the difference between File:Israel_relief_location_map.jpg and File:West Bank & Gaza Map 2007 (Settlements).png, both showing the international boundaries and the administrative lines and the first, with its different color, shows clearly there's a “problem” with the Gaza Band, West Bank and the Golan areas. You had to rename the map File:Israel_relief_location_map-blank.jpg because it mentioned “Israel” in its title? I named it this way because it's an exact copy of the first one above but without boundaries. I could have called it “Judea location map” as it is its first purpose. Really, I don't see how people that stay stuck in such detail considerations (the map is only a tool in the article) can make neutral and constructive contributions in an article like this one. I think that's childish. But as previously said, that's not my war.

Going back to the main subject: you have to use the en:Template:Location map Israel (lol! Israel again!), because it's the one that has the parameters for the maps with those geographic extensions, and specify which map you want to display (in you case “File:Dead_Sea_terrain_location_map.jpg”). Take also a look to en:Template:Location_map#Using_Alternative_Map to know how to use an alternative map in a location template. Remember that the map you will use must fit exactly in the ones used in the template, so you can't crop a map or use a larger one (considering the geographic limits).

I couldn't agree more. There's a lot of heat around Israel right now and it's growing. We solved the problem with a compromise I drafted based on other maps. It's works fine.
