First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Deletion[edit]

It's clearly not a CSD. If you want to make a proper deletion request, feel free. ed g2stalk 22:19, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've blocked you for a day for calling Ed a vandal - twice. Please learn some decorum and civility.
James F. (talk) 15:05, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"He removed the tags and did not take it to normal deletion, thus it is vandalism (at least how i define it anyway)"

You really ought to work out what we mean by "vandalism". "Vandalism" never applies to good faith edits. Calling people vandals in such situations is uncivil and leads to unnecessary hostility amongst users. You have been warned about this several times on en.wiki as well. Defending it as your interpretation of the word does not help, it's how everyone else interprets it that matters. ed g2stalk 02:21, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your two edit summaries were "rv vandalism" and "rv vandal". Blanking notices when done in bad faith is vandalism. When you are adding ridiculous speedy delete claims just to annoy me, blanking notices is fully justified and not vandalism. You must learn to be civil, and assume good faith. ed g2stalk 13:30, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletions of for obvious copyvios. That is by no means an obvious copyvios (such as when entire images are copied from another source). If you actually think that image qualifies for speedy deletion then you are simply very wrong ("In any case involving doubt, use deletion request instead of asking for speedy deletion."). I suspect however you were just trying to prove a point. ed g2stalk 14:55, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Matthew was too quick to use the term "vandal" when he saw blatant violations of policy, but that is hardly a blocking offence. Ed_g2s and Jdforrester broke policy, not Matthew. The block is a clear case of admin abuse. An apology is in order. — Erin (talk) 23:04, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see any admin abuse here myself - there needs to be consequences for editors who aren't learning how to behave. Stan Shebs 15:49, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. You are an admin. — Erin (talk) 00:50, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Book cover[edit]

Book cover is copyrighted itself, so as far as you are not author of it, you cannot take photo, and claim any copyrights ...

Couse of that I'm going to delete it.

Images from Flickr[edit]

I deleted Image:Dakota Fanning.jpg being a copyright violation. Please note that most Flickr users don't have a clue about copyrights, so if you upload images from Flickr, consider whether this image could have been taken by the Flickr user themselves. -- Bryan (talk to me) 17:52, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Link on your user page[edit]

Maybe you should update it - it goes nowhere? Thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:00, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for notifying me. MatthewFenton 15:18, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
