This picture is from enWiki and it's under GFDL. If you want you can delete it. Yarl.pl talk 15:13, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't know that it was taken from English WP. If the picture was under GFDL, than you need to write that in the Image description because the GFDL requires to name the original author. Anyway, I think the image has been "misstagged" in the English Wikipedia where Fair use might apply to the picture. --Matt314 15:22, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Matt can you delete my image?--Matteo1993 13:49, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your images have been deleted by admins of Commons: [1], [2]. --Matt314 14:02, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I tried to source this image (Image:Mussolini.jpg) but it wouldn't let me edit, it just kept showing the no source tag. Please insert this source in it: [3]. Thanks. en:User:Kinneyboy90

The image has been deleted by now [4], if you feel the deletion was not correct you can contact the admin who deleted the file. Please note that the image was taken from a page that states "all rights reserved" (in German). If you uploaded the file because you assumed it is in the public domain because of age, you need to know that only photos whose creator has been deceased more than 70 years ago are accepted as "PD-old". --Matt314 16:50, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Morguefile[edit]

Thnks for your help... i see, this site should be public domain images source but they make things so complicated :( --Cyberpunk 02:57, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Morguefile again[edit]

You posted a message about the image I got from Morguefile, but probably did a mistake on the image name. The problem you pointed was probably about the Image:Angkor-Wat Library-1st.jpg rather than the one you cited.

Please do consider that Image:Angkor-Wat Library-1st.jpg, even downloaded from Morguefile, come with a written agreement from its author, which agreement was quoted on the image's page. In my mind it is no more a Morguefile image but an image from the author. Therefore I come back to an CC attribution licence scheme. --Lozère 17:41, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please see en:Template talk:MorgueFile for reasons why these files have been deleted. As the image has been deleted now, I cannot tell who uploaded them. If you believe the file was deleted by mistake, please contact the administrator who deleted the file. --Matt314 16:17, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Matt, you were right. I did not check the copyright nor the credentials of my sources properly and I do know now that I may be infringing on somebody else's copyright. I am newbie at all this, so call it part of the learning process. My mistake. Therefore, I suggest that you have the following two files deleted:

Sorry[edit]

Sorry. Wiki en users have done that so I supposed it was Ok. You guys can delete stuff fast? --Kimberly Ashton 02:36, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On en.wikipedia the file might have been allowed as fair use which is not allowed on Commons. The file has been deleted by now. --Matt314 09:44, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion[edit]

Thank you for nominating the images I uploaded, it's a good tactic for scaring away folks. I wás going to upload my images here so other wikis could use it, but seeing people act all difficult here, I'm reconsidering. Check the updated pages again (references to source found). Quick-delete.js[edit]

Hello,

You can disable the autosaving by adding:

nfd_autosave = false;
mnx_autosave = false;

in Special:Mypage/monobook.js somewhere after you include MediaWiki:Quick-delete.js. It's best to include the sitewide copy so that any changes that are made are passed on to you. Thanks, Alphax (talk) 15:48, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alphax, thanks for your message. I did disable autosave, but I forgot to empty my browser cache... I copied it to my monobook but put the mediawiki page on my watchlist, so I will notice any changes. --Matt314 16:25, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Admin?[edit]

Hi Matt,

I have noticed for a long time that you are making tons of very useful contributions, helping new users at the COM:HD and on their talk pages, and marking copyvios, not to mention uploads as well. Are you interested in becoming an admin? I think you would benefit the community greatly. If you like, I would be more than happy to nominate you, or self-nominations are also welcome. Let me know.

cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 01:50, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi pfctdayelise! Thanks for the message. I think it would be helpful if I could use the additional functions (e.g. to delete a picture after having moved it or to work on the nsd/nld backlog) and I would accept your nomination. --Matt314 11:26, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments in Lar's recent RfA![edit]

Dear Matt314: I would like to thank you for your support in my recent RfA which passed 20 to 1. I really appreciate the trust you've placed in me. Please help me be a better admin by giving me feedback when you think I need it, and praise when you think I've earned it. Thanks for your support, much appreciated. I wish you all the best in your own RfA and I look forward to working with you. I'm guessing you are around MI somewhere, if we ever have a meetup, count on me buying you a beverage of your choice if you'll share some of your picture taking secrets with me. ++Lar: t/c 04:09, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I chose LEGO to illustrate my thank you messagess, because LEGO is a system that we build things with. Commons holds the building blocks that other wikis use to make great things. Without Commons images and media, other wikis would be much poorer. Let's help build the greatest freely available intellectual collection the world has ever known... together.

Hungarian Revolution of 1956[edit]

Thanks for the note. Yes, the AHF does hold copyright, and they state on their homepage that these images are offered for download to commemorate the event (which we are doing). Our tag is probably not the most elegant one (I am open to suggestion as to a better one) but its clear that we are allowed to use them for this purpose. I would welcome a suggestion of a better tag, and especially how to fill it in, as the main editors of this page are commons neophytes. Thanks in advance! Istvan 15:39, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matt, perhaps this may help - please refer to the statement of permission which is given on their 1956 portal -2nd paragraph[5] and they have also explicitly listed wikipedia here [6] (about 45% of the way down on the right, below the TIME magazine cover icon) as one of their coordinated activities (which it is)- that page links directly to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 page on the EnWiki. Please do not delete the images as there is clearly permission, and if there are further issues to be resolved please let me know - I will try to resolve them, as this article (56 revolution) is up for Feature Article Candidate right now and image deletion would be disasterous. Thanks Istvan 21:23, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Matt, we have asked the AHF to provide a statement, but have not heard back from them yet. I am happy to adjust the tags if that would help resolve the issue - hence the request for help - so there are possibly two or three ways of resolution. Can you suggest perhaps a different tag? hosting on the EnWiki? What precise information from the AHF is required for resolution? (when we do hear from them, we need to know exactly what to ask for). Thanks Istvan 07:02, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matt! I'm an administrator on the English Wikipedia. I was asked on my talk page to help Istvan and other editors to find a proper template. More of them tried to contact the webmasters, but no answers so far. I'm totally sure about that we can use these photos and the webmasters won't have any problem with "the reuse of their files by third parties". If needed, I take the responsibility for these images that we'll get a perfect permission from them in days, just have to get an answer. Removing those photos would ruin the whole FA Candidation, and just 8 days left before the anniversary. Anyway if you could propose a better template as they marked wiki as one of their coordinated activities, it'd be very kind of you. NCurse 08:08, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Matt, we finally made contact with the AHF who put a statement on (the upper left section of) their portal page [7] (the source of the photos) stating that those photos are public domain. Do we need a different tag then, or will the "Attribution" one do? BTW, Congrats on the Adminship.Istvan 20:05, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Istvan, if the pictures are in the Public Domain, then you can just pick the best fitting tag from Commons:License tags#Public domain. --Matt314 06:45, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to suggest to remove the dispensable warning (by using a template) on copyright issues IMMEDIATELY and to be more careful when arguing in order to provoke disputes, OBVIOUSLY.

Ich habe Deinen blamablen Einlassungen einige hoffentlich lehrreiche Antworten erteilt. - Aloismaierl 07:13, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Mr. Rumsfeld won't have any use for it any more, he just steped down from office... Still, the image taken from that space page is copyrighted, and their work has "Schöpfungshöhe". Other admins also consider this image a copyright violation, see here. --Matt314 19:01, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Plain NONSENSE. The only thing that has "Schöpfungshöhe" (which means: a level of creativity of its own) is the photo composition itself. - 84.146.202.27 14:48, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And you are making your statement based on what law? If you doubt this situation, feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or at the German Wikipedia (the users there are more likely to know about "Schöpfungshöhe") at de:WP:UF. --Matt314 19:06, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hola Matt314:

I thought[edit]

I thought Wikipedia was fair use! Gosh..... >_< If we can't upload those files, then why do ya even have that option? OMG...Wikipicky 22:53, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wikipicky! Actually some Wikipedias do allow fair use, e.g. the English one. But images uploaded under a fair use rationale always have to go with some content. As Commons is only a media reservoir, the embedding content that fair use images require is missing. Furthermore Commons only allowes free media content, so it is a prerequisite that it is allowed to use media commercially and with modifications. You uploaded the file stating the image was "GFDL" (you checked "GFDL content from English Wikipedia" while uploading) but the image is not released under that license at the English Wikipedia.
It' not been a bis problem, as the file has been deleted. If you want to transfer an image from another Wikipedia to Commons just use the CommonsHelper, it fills in (almost) all necessary fields while uploading. Happy uploading! --Matt314 08:56, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

beastie boys' image[edit]

~Dear matt314, I remained rather surprised when I saw what you did about this image.Image:Bboysphotonyc.jpg. First, because the b-boys' page has recently entered in the group of the best articles in the italian version of wikipedia, and this problem about the image brings many doubts about its remain in this "class". Then, because it seems very strange, because I think that the permission is clear. So, I do not fully comprehend your request. I've used the same permission for the other beastie boys'images, so you should remove all them! Please make me understand the question better, not because I don't understand English, but for the fact that I'd like to have a clearer explanation. Thank you, Sconvolpi74

Dear Matt, first of all, thanks for the very fast answer that you gave me! Then, I wanted to tell you that I've fully understood the problem. So, I'd like to have some help by you. You have stated that magazine covers are copyvio on Commons and are not allowed. This is not the official policy per Wikipedia, especially with regards to Time Magazine covers, which have their own licensing template "TIME" and are considered FAIR USE, and not in violation of copyright as long as proper attribution is given. There is a complete catagory filled with covers as per "Category:Fair use TIME magazine covers", and Time Magazine covers appear in many individual articles.

Perr 21:14, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright on images[edit]

Hi Matt, I've updated the information on the images you noted. Please check if these now make sense. Thanks. Serouj 22:49, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the details, Matt. The Shahan Natalie images are from his book from 1928, which has been republished in 2002. Can a publishing house claim the rights of an author who has passed away and who wrote the book 78 years ago? thanks. Serouj 23:19, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Game covers[edit]

Could you just tell me what license I should use for game covers? If there is any possibility to upload it here. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nazin (talk • contribs) at 21:48, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RFA: Thanks[edit]

Thank you for your support on my RFA. Now that I have been promoted, I promise to be as hardworking and fair with the admin tools as I have been with the other areas here on Commons. See you around and happy editing. Zzyzx11 15:53, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License question "Crown Copyright"[edit]

On page [8] it says: "All topographic data featured in NZTopoOnline is subject to Crown copyright protection or is licenced to the Crown (DEM data used for hill shading is supplied under licence by GeographX Ltd). You may use, copy and distribute the information extracted from NZTopoOnline in any format or media without charge. However where the data is distributed to a third party, the source, date of extract and copyright of the Crown must be acknowledged eg (NZTopoOnline, extracted July 2002, Crown Copyright Reserved)."

Can such materials be used in Wikipedia, and what license tag is to be used? --Ratzer1 08:28, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo! You may use, copy and distribute the information extracted from NZTopoOnline in any format or media without charge.) --Matt314 14:29, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Etiquetando imagen Image:La_Carolina.jpg[edit]

--Pastranec 11:33, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Si tu has tomado este fotografía, puedes añadir "own work". --Matt314 19:39, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

about Image:Maooooto chi.JPG 謝謝您的提醒[edit]

Thank you for your concern! I have added the correct tag for this picture. This picture is a photo of a letter written by the president of a local gouvernment to the president of the Republic of China in 1938. According to Copyright Law of the Republic of China(The Republic of China still exists and proclaims the sovereignty over all territories of China), this kind of letter is in the public domain. 13:18, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

請你再看看Image:Illu24.jpg. --Matt314 19:39, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
thank you again for your concern! I have added the correct tag for Image:Huqngg.jpg; Image:Illu24.jpg is a cash receipt signed by Mao in 1938, the owner of this receipt is the Third Communist Internationa. I am not sure which copyright tag shall be added beacause the communist international has ceased to exist for more than 60 years, anyway,I donn't think anyone will claim the copyright for this staff. Please help me to add a correct tag for it! (These pics have been used in the biograpthy of Mao and Chiang in WIKI chinise )--民國九十五年 03:32, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I think I tagged the picture as "own work" as I took the screenshot in my computer (from a free/open source program).

I will try to upload the image again and tag it correctly.

Translation from Italian:

Dear Matt, this photo is taken from www.parmaitaly.com PARMAITALY.COM s.r.l. [...] which is copyright holder.
In their site it is clearly stated that reproduction of the photos is allowed on Internet sites as long as http://www.parmaitaly.it is supplied as the source, and the link activated, which I did on the picture description page.
for additional safety I also asked the administrator of the site which holds the copyright (info@parmaitaly.com) for the explicit authorization to use on Wikipedia the pictures on their site in the section Parma che cambia the way I've already done. On 12, dec 2006 the admin (Mr. Dino Baroni) replied with the authorization to publish the pictures on Wikipedia.
I don't know which license to use (I'd be glad if you could clarify me on this point), but I think publishing here the photos from www.parmaitaly.com is entirely legal and authorized respecting the established terms of use.
Thank you for your support and clarifications (in Italian or French if possibile).

Matt, I'd suggest you to reply him in French, as he asks. Bye --ColdShine 15:11, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, on the image description page he quotes the license from the source web site, "E' consentita ai siti Internet la riproduzione delle fotografie citando la fonte http://www.parmaitaly.it/ e attivando il link.", which translates to "Reproduction of the photos is allowed as long as a link to the source http://www.parmaitaly.it is supplied and the link activated.". Lex2 states he followed this procedure, so this would seem to be the procedure requested by the copyright holder in order not to violate the license. --ColdShine 15:17, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
J'ai répondu sur User talk:Lex2. --Matt314 19:34, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Happy new year 2007 à tous le monde :) !!! --Lex2 10:51, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bye --Lex2 17:44, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lizenzfrage[edit]

Hallo Matt, folgende Lizenzfrage: Auf meine E-Mail-Anfrage "...I have been looking for a photo of ..., preferably in public domain or with 'creative commons' license to publish and distribute freely. I found this one: ... Please advise me about the copyright status of this image. If necessary, please put me in contact with the copyright owner." erhielt ich folgende Antwort per E-Mail: "You may use any photo shown on www.aspen-ridge.net (soon to be www.60South.net ) as long as proper credit is given to the person who provided the photo (in this case John Baxter) , AND to www.aspen-ridge.net / www.60South.net" Mit welcher Lizenz können diese Fotos in der Wikipedia verwendet werden?--Ratzer1 13:50, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matt, I have been contacted by this user after I left him a {{Nld}} notice. He's a German speaker and while I can read German, I'm quite incapable of writing more than two words. Could you please explain to him how things work (as far as correctly tagging pictures goes, that is)? TIA. Happy New Year to you, Jastrow (Λέγετε) 16:29, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jastrow, I left this user a message on his talk page to ask him to add source information for his pictures or to ask me if there are any more questions. Bonne année! --Matt314 19:34, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, sincerely by your notice. I believe that already is ready; was forgot me to place that its author died over 70 years ago. It so happens that, recently I am learning aqui.

Ok. There is not because to thank, I deberia to thank you, since has had a pleasing one (and comprehensive action). Jerzy Prokopiuk[edit]

Welche Lizenz sollte ich also waehlen? Frage zur Veröffentlichung von Pressefotos[edit]

Hallo Matt314! --Edward.Hopper 20:38, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Meine Bilder[edit]
