Could you please explain...

Could you please explain why you nominated File:Al_Qaeda_scrapbook_2.jpg for deletion, without leaving a good faith heads-up on uploader's talk page? Geo Swan (talk) 03:30, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Someone erased this image before I left my defense on the talk page. I am not challenging your good faith, but I believe you may misunderstand how copyright works. A wire service or newspaper does not acquire the intellectual property rights to a public domain image merely by publishing it.
I request your help getting this image restored. Geo Swan (talk) 04:31, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

I honestly believed it was not a free image. Sorry I forgot to notify you. It looks like it was never deleted. -- malo (talk) 21:44, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Malo!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Flickr-reviewerstatus granted

Hello. I granted you flickr reviewer status. Please see the instructions at Commons:Flickr images/reviewers and consider to add User trusted to your userpage. You can ask me if you need any help. Best regards. Kwj2772 (msg) 13:28, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Made proper changes

I made the proper citations for the image located at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gopalbrand5.jpeg#Summary. I found a more specific source and cited the correct author. No particular author exists, so I cited the MN state government. I hope this suffices. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Motleylos86 (talk • contribs) 22:45, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for adding the source, the problem however is also in the fact that this is not the work of the US Federal Government. Instead it appears to be the work of the State of Minnesota, which does not necessarily mean it is in the public domain. In fact it is more likely that this image is copyrighted. And if that is the case it would have to be used in a fair use capacity, which in turn requires that it be removed from Commons. -- malo (talk) 23:33, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

It would seem that the works of the State of Minnesota are in the public domain. This image should haven been tagged with Template:PD-MNGov. I do not think this applies to the other images you've recently uploaded though. -- malo (talk) 18:04, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Lagoven & Maraven

Dear Malo

Hi. I just read your concerns about the license of the Lagoven & Maraven logos. Let me explain my understanding as follows:

 • Lagoven and Maraven (as well as Corpoven, which I'm currently work on) are now defunct companies. As such, there will be no marketing conflicts by publishing visual reference to the logos.
 • Both brand names are property of PDVSA -certainly true. But they have now no commercial value at all as PDVSA is marketing products under different names now (mainly PDV in Venezuela).
 • The images were rendered by myself, in low resolution. They are only meant to avoid confusion and help people to know they reached the right article.
 • These images are closely related to the Venezuelan pop culture of the last 35 years. PDVSA is, ultimately, property of the Venezuelan nation. I believe no harm is done to the PDVSA assets here and that is -of course- not my intention.

I'm also aware that I did NOT created those logos -somebody else did it so more than 35 years ago- but I rather created some images "based" on the original logos.

I appreciate very much your concerns and I would like to know your point of view in regard to my interpretations.

Many thanks for your attention.

Typically logos such as these are under the copyright of that company. I'm not certain how copyright works in Venezula, however my understanding is that usually someone or some entity retains the rights for such images, even when the company changes names, becomes acquired but another company, or goes out of business. I don't know if these images qualify for Creative Commons licensing. I fear that they may be only Fair Use images, which would put them outside the scope of Wikimedia Commons. I would like a Commons admin to review the images and make a determination on their licenses. Thanks -- malo (talk) 18:09, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. Keep me informed about the status of the copyright - In the meantime, I'm removing the link to the images - better to stay on the safe side. Yix (talk) 20:50, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

We should probably ask the original uploader for permission instead of the Commons-mover. I'll leave a message at w:en. Hekerui (talk) 22:15, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Please be a bit more careful with nominating images for speedy deletion.

My bad, I'll slow down and be more careful. -- malo (talk) 20:55, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi, you added a note about the CC-BY-ND 2.0 license. Please nominate images with incompatible licenses for deletion immediately in the future. Best Hekerui (talk) 19:47, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

I did? when? where? huh? -- malo (talk) 21:25, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Tagging

Hi Malo,

Please use reason, reason or instead of pasting the entire template code on a page. Thank you, –Krinkletalk 00:33, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
