Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 04:23, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Panoramio Review[edit]

  •  Comment: When you upload an image from panoramio, you are supposed to type in {{Panoramioreview}} so that someone can mark and confirm the licenses at upload. But since you forgot to do that, Commons cannot confirm that the images were free at upload and so I suspect the images will be deleted sadly.
  • Someone has recently created a panoramio review bot which should mark your images from panoramio within 1-2 days of being tagged with the {{Panoramioreview}} template. When an image passes panoramioreview or flickrreview, it is usually considered passed for life...even if the copyright owner later changes the license or deletes the image. See this image which was marked before the copyright owner changed the license. No one marked rausis75's images unfortunately before he deleted his images since you did not type in a {{Panoramioreview}} for images from his account. USMC images[edit]

Hi. Turns out, after a bit of searching, that those USMC image codes were correct, per the Marines website, and the EXIFs are just in error. I fixed the source links to point to the correct location of the images on the USMC website, that gives the codes that were currently being used for the filenames. Annoying, but not your fault. Bots[edit]

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Category:Ropaži parish[edit]

Do not add such category to images because in Latvia Ropažu pagasts since 2005 don't exist. This category is only for historic materials (COA etc). TIA --Kikos (talk) 13:44, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Uploaded with UploadWizard[edit]

Please do not add this category to any image. It has been decided at Commons:Categories for discussion/2016/08/Category:Uploaded with UploadWizard that this category will be deleted. The category is no longer added automatically by the Upload Wizard and should also not be added manually. De728631 (talk) 16:23, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cropping images[edit]

Hello, I have a quick suggestion for you: use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences under Gadgets to crop images. The CropTool will then appear on the left side of your screen... saving everyone a lot of time since it automatically transfers all of the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It will leave a backlink to the original file and vice versa. Using this tool makes sure that all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the copped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. Commerce photos[edit]

Hey Maliepa, I uploaded a higher quality version of Catherine Keller. As I'm sure you figured out, much like the State Dept. ambassadors, if you play with the url for the Dept. of Commerce, you'll be able to get the larger photos. Here is the link for the higher quality version. The difference is I removed styles/scale_250w/public/ from the url which produced the larger version. Just thought I'd let you know for future reference... Corky 19:04, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

McCain[edit]

Hello. Will you upload all the photos? --Engelberthumperdink (talk) 12:11, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I can upload them, but cleaning them up will take a while because the description fields are blank and the bot doesn't insert the proper license tag. – Maliepa (talk) 12:24, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Thank you. --Engelberthumperdink (talk) 12:27, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jeong Kyeong-doo[edit]

Hi Maliepa, the description for the photo says that the person in front is Jeong Kyeong-doo. Is that not him? (to be honest, I'm not 100% sure either) // sikander { talk } 🦖 14:52, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a photo of Jeong Kyeong-doo in his ROK Air Force uniform taken during the same ceremony. The gold shoulder braid on the junior officer in the first photograph indicates that he is an aide to a senior officer or government official. – Maliepa (talk) 17:37, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

category for files you have uploaded[edit]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Maliepa: as I created the Category:Melvin Colvin Hazen, I added the images to that category Melvin Colvin Hazen (Q18025726). Do you think a redirect to that category would make sense, or would you delete it? Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 15:04, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Lotje: I looked over the linked pages and converted the old Commons category into a redirect myself. All best – Maliepa (talk) 15:49, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you ever so much Maliepa. Lotje (talk) 16:16, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Identification of admirals[edit]

Been trying to identify all the individual Wikimedia categories for most of the ppl in this Symposium image in 2021. Most of the higher-ranking U.S. admirals I can identify, but may I ask if you can help in adding as many of the others you can identify? SuperWIKI (talk) 13:35, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SuperWIKI: I'll see what I can do, but the resolution is probably not high enough for extracting individual headshots later. – Maliepa (talk) 13:48, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh you don't need to extract any actual images for this. I meant if there are any individuals in this image who you can identify, could you add their Wikimedia category to the bottom of the page? SuperWIKI (talk) 13:58, 20 September 2021 (UTC)ː[reply]
@Maliepa: Oh, that's what you're doing. Never mind, carry on. Well doneǃ SuperWIKI (talk) 15:45, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@SuperWIKI: I added Wettlaufer and Hughes in the back rows. I don't see Black there. I can't identify the American rear admiral (lower half) and naval aviator just in front of Copley. – Maliepa (talk) 14:38, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Maliepa: I believe Black is the admiral to Copley's immediate left, just behind Admiral Morley. Secondly, could I also ask if you could help identify individuals in this photograph? EDIT: Seems you've already started on that. Apologies, please carry on. SuperWIKI (talk) 15:40, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting Army pics, advice[edit]

Was wondering if there is a way to request Army portraits by emailing a certain recipient. I can't seem to find a high-def portrait of Cavoli in Army greens. Do you happen to know of any such ways? SuperWIKI (talk) 02:17, 19 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SuperWIKI: No, I don't have any contacts in the Army Public Affairs Office(s). I guess that I would try sending an e-mail to the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Public Affairs Office. – Maliepa (talk) 11:38, 19 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

University and college yearbooks[edit]

Category discussion warning

University and college yearbooks has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Renaming creator templates[edit]

a) is there in fact a creator template for a 19th-century general named Daniel van Voorhis? If not, there's hardly a reason to disambiguate the one for the silversmith (just like how there's no reason for "creator:Bob Satterfield" to specify "these cartoons were drawn by the Bob Satterfield who was the cartoonist, not the Bob Satterfield who was the boxer").

b) when you renamed the template without leaving a redirect, you broke its use on 52 pages.

c) I look forward to you providing a convincing argument as to why I shouldn't put it right back where it was before you moved it. I'll wait a week. DS (talk) 14:11, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry for the damage. I was just trying to break the link between Category:Daniel Van Voorhis for the general and Creator:Daniel Van Voorhis for the silversmith. I couldn't get the creator page to link to the new Category:Daniel Van Voorhis (silversmith) any other way. If you know a better way, please go ahead and do so. - Maliepa (talk) 16:29, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That sort of change should be made on Wikidata (and I'll do it for you). DS (talk) 16:44, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
