File:DonChowTacosLogo.jpg[edit]

Hello. Are you the artist who created the logo File:DonChowTacosLogo.jpg? Are you the copyright holder as well, and grant permission for everybody to reuse this logo in other contexts as long as they give credit to you per Creative Commons? -- Infrogmation (talk) 16:00, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh wait, I figured it out. I emailed you. Makenachiemi (talk) 17:40, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Got the email, and thank you for your quick reply. I'm glad you figured out the talk page. Sorry, but permission to post to Wikipedia is not sufficient (and is not what is claimed on your image description). Commons only accepts free licensed images; see the welcome message above for links with details. There are a couple of choices here: 1) You can get explicit permission to release the logo under a free license from the company. (I'd be a bit surprised if they'd wish to do that, since it would allow others to reuse their logo. However at present I will tag the logo as missing permission.) 2) You can upload the logo locally at en:Wikipedia for use in the article only, noting it is a copyrighted logo used under fair use for the article; see Wikipedia:Fair use. That's the situation with most modern corporate logos that incorporate artwork or creative design in Wikipedia. Thanks for your work, and please make sure your descriptions of authorship and statements of copyright are accurate; if you have questions you are having trouble finding an answer to, ask. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 19:59, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How do I do the second option? What is local uploading? (I can get a letter, but I feel like you're talking me out of it)? Makenachiemi (talk) 23:40, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not trying to "talk you out of it"; it is just unusual for corporations to release their logo under a free license -- meaning that not just Wikipedia, but anyone (including other corporations) can reuse it. Make sure that both you and the copyright holder understand that's what it means if you're going that route. You might wish to check out Commons:Licensing (the stuff towards the top of the page -- the list of copyright conditions in nations around the world isn't relevant to this) and Commons:Choosing a license. For uploading to Wikipedia (which would only make the image available on English language Wikipedia, not all Wikimedia projects, since many other countries don't allow the US concept of "fair use" of copyrighted material), check out Wikipedia:Non-free content: Images and [Wikipedia:WikiProject Images and Media/Non-free http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Images_and_Media/Non-free] for information; the image can be uploaded at Wikipedia:Upload pretty much the same way as you uploaded images here to Commons, but specifying a fair use rationale. This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:DonChowTacosLogo.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:DonChowTacosLogo.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Ownership of Don Chow Tacos photo[edit]

It's very tacky, and inappropriate, to claim as your own work a photograph you lifted from the Don Chow Tacos website that was taken by someone else. I took the original photograph, which I gave to one of the DCT owners, at a fundraiser. I can identify the location (easily verified by our own article on it), and the student in the CSI t-shirt, should anyone doubt my claim, given the metadata on the photograph doesn't display that it was taken by a Nikon P150 camera on November 17, 2010 at roughly 3:30 pm. I have chained the photo credit to my user name. I don't mind the photo being posted, just that someone who's never been near the truck claimed ownership of my photograph. --Drmargi (talk) 19:32, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Drmargi,
Apologies for the misunderstanding, I did not intend to claim your work as my own, and furthermore, I'm very aware of the seriousness of photographic theft. I'm very sorry that I did not attribute your work properly, it was a mistake on my part for my poor knowledge of wikipedia. I was given the photograph by the truck owners who received that photo from you, I probably did not know how to upload it and did so incorrectly. I've changed the source of the photo to your name and have contacted the truck owners to see if they can contact you as you have not left me an email and you do not have a user page. I've realized I can't take the photo down because I'm not a wikipedia administrator, but that would have been my first course of action until a time as you let me know what you'd like me to do.
