First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

"copyright violation"[edit]

Hello. You created a lot of cycling icons adapted from a set of SVG Icons, which were uploaded as GFDL/CC-BY-SA. You can not just upload these as "your own work" and "public domain". Normal copryright violations get deleted - However, in this case they can stay online if they get rebranded as GFDL/CC-BY-SA - I started a discussion on Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Copyright_violation:_derivates_of_GFDL.2FCC-BY-SA_re-uploaded_as_own_work.2FPD.... Your account will be renamed[edit]

Hello,

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Maillotero. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Maillotero~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.

SVG Cycling Jerseys[edit]

Dear Maillotero,

You uploaded a number of cycling jersey PNG icons to Wikimedia Commons, thanks for that. However, the shape is exactly the same as the file:Jersey yellow.svg that I created, and uploaded under CC-BY-SA. This means that if you create derivative works, you must

  1. credit the original creator(s), and
  2. share it under the same license

Could you make changes to the images you uploaded?

You can do this very simply by adding the following two lines to the icons you originally created (and removing the current license template line}}

If you based this icon on another icon than File:Jersey yellow.svg, you can substitue that and credit the creator thereof.

Also, I would reccomend you upload small icons like this in SVG in the future. SVG is a better format for icons like these - they are easier to edit and to scale.
