Cat-a-lot with search results

As the father of cat-a-lot, I wonder whether you have seen my comments here. As usual other people have changed the world and cat-a-lot has been tripped up and the world has lost a great asset :-(. Is the surgery going to be difficult, or shall I give up on the patient? :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 00:13, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Bump :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 20:35, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Auf Flickr wird geschrieben "to license this image..."

--Magnus Manske (talk) 09:31, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Migration

Hi Magnus! Hope this is an easy fix. Images like File:Rudraksha 2.jpg transfered from commons has two probems. 1) "|Migration=relicense" should be changed to "|migration=relicense" (small letter). 2) no need for both "{tl|Cc-by-sa-3.0-migrated}}" and "|migration=relicense". Hope you will not slap me with a trout because I wrote here :-) --MGA73 (talk) 20:27, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi! So, I take it, your bot takes the commonshelper text to transfer images from Wikipedia to Commons. I've added a string replacement for 1), even though it wasn't an issue in the example you gave. 2) is more problematic, not only for parsing (find template start/end; parse parameters), but also which templates should stay in which form under which conditions. I don't see an easy fix for this. --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:43, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. My bot uses imagecopy.py and that uses commenshelper. We (Multichill and I) have had a lot of errors during the migration project wit images that is transfered to Commons. But now I finally did somthing about it (I asked you - hehe). And yes it was an issue in the image I just fixed it manually [1] :-) Thank you! --MGA73 (talk) 13:48, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

CommonsHelper

Hi. When a file with Self ( http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Self ) with "autore" (author) parameter compiled is transferred from it.wiki, in the author parameter on Commons there is the uploader name, but "autore" is needed. Could you please fix it? Thank you very much--Trixt (talk) 09:57, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Can you give me an image on it.wp that uses this self and autore in that fashion, and hasn't been transfered to Commons yet? --Magnus Manske (talk) 09:12, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Sure: it:File:Lake Pilato.jpg. Thank you in advance--Trixt (talk) 13:55, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Should work now. Will cause a double entry if it's in both Information and self. Hard to code around that, sorry. Cheers, --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:05, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

I would like to print and display an image from wikimedia It has a free cultural works license but how do I know who to contact regarding changes to the license stipulations? And how do I get hold of them?

Every information available is usually on the image description page and the image history. If it's a free license, you don't need to contact people at all. If that didn't help you, please tell me which image it is, and I'll see what I can do. --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:27, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I'm still here :) I need a fix for it.wiki: it:Template:PD-Requisiti is equal PD-ineligible here on Commons. Thank you in advance--Trixt (talk) 21:58, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

I am unhappy about the way your bot has moved my picture. The File history should continue to reflect the original upload information and source. Thus the user field should still list the original uploader, the original comment should appear before the detritus that you added. your bots infor should follow the original info  :( Saltysailor (talk) 01:32, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Geograph.org2Commons

Is it possible to adapt this bot to work with Geograph Germany? I attempted to here File:Forage_Harvester,_Alderton._-_geograph.org.uk_-_6554.jpg I got the German image (see file history) but the description was from the UK site. I hope I haven't caused problems with my over curiosity! I am posting this here partly to notify you encase any problems occur and partly in hope that you might adapt the tool to take German images. While I'm here can I just complement you in your bot Geograph.org2Commons which is excellent.Oxyman (talk) 05:20, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

FIST can now search geo.hlipp.de as well. geograpg_org2commons will understand it as well and should use the provided text. --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:21, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply, have started to use it, The other slight isue I have found is that Geograph.org2Commons refuses to upload images with the "&" sign in their title, not a complaint but you may like to know. Oxyman (talk) 01:13, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Troubles with your tools on my server

Hi Mr. Manske. I've uploaded your tools to my server to reduce a little bit the Toolserver's bandwidth. But appears that functions rarely. Commonshelper don't upload images directly. Can you help me?.

Thanks. MisterWiki (talk) 14:28, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Well, the problem description is a little vague :-) You'll need commonshelper.php, included files (and files included in those), as well as upload_bot.pl. For the latter, you'll need upload_bot_key.txt in the parent dir, and you'll have to adjust $username to one of your logins.
May I ask why you want to do all that setup? The toolserver bandwidth is fine AFAIK, and commonshelper won't max it out anytime soon. Cheers, Magnus Manske (talk) 18:56, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

CatScan2

Hi Magnus, it is a great tool. Just one thing: sometimes it could be useful if one could set a "depth" for "negative categories" independently of the one for (positive) categories. -- User:Docu at 14:59, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

You should be able to set individual category depths (both positive and negative) by appending "|" and a number to the line with the respective category. The manual page should reflect that. --Magnus Manske (talk) 22:58, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. I should be reading the manual more frequently. -- User:Docu at 13:37, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Hm, looks like I borked it yesterday. Sorry about that. Would you restart it? -- User:Docu at 17:12, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Upload bot

The category Steam locomotives of the United Kingdom is now full of ~500 (as of 12/12/2009) images, which all require recategorisation. Additionally numerous photos are incorrectly categorised in the wrong railway.

Would it be possible to instruct those that use the bot to take more time in categorising what they upload. Also many of the images are quite similar - could they also be requested to show some restraint.

The category is now junk and seems require manual sorting. Perhaps it would be possible to stop the bot from uploading any more images to this cat? Shortfatlad (talk) 02:09, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

I could add some instructions to the bot page, but I sincerely doubt that would stop anyone. Also, bogus category entries might come from WikiSense, which is used by default (and usually yields good results). For cleanup of wrongly categorized files, try another tool of mine (experimental; requires TUSC). --Magnus Manske (talk) 23:04, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
File:August_Fick.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Stand down!

Your bot is about to violate one of Asmov's rules. ARRRRGGG. Its massively tagged all the ligitamate pictures I uploaded from Flickr (and maybe many other people's pictures too) just because of Flickr's unclear public domain tags. The images I uploaded were all clearly PDold, and of no harm to anyone. Your bot needs to help clean up it's mess, its giving only 7 days on all sorts of images ... come on, reverese action please. Cheers, Nesnad (talk) 16:34, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

OK, first, I don't know which pictures you are talking about. Second, my bot can't figure out which are "good" and "bad" PD if it's not advertised in machine-readable form; it either tags them with one tag, or doesn't allow transfer at all. Third, it doesn't edit pages and therefore can't "clean up". Fourth, if you are operating my Flickr upload tool ("bot" is really a misnomer), then it's not me or my tool who should (or could) "stand down"; that is only an option for the operator which is ... you. If there is an alternative tag I can use for Flickr PD that's "safe", or you have any suggestion I can reasonably implement, feel free to suggest it. As it is, I do not have the infrastructure to mass-retag existing images, and currently lack the time to create one. --Magnus Manske (talk) 22:54, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
Your bot seems to have tagged a lot of my old legitimate uploads (and if I originally used your bot, thanks honestly for the help... but why go back and then retag them for deletion way after the fact??... sigh...) or someone tagged them in it's name. I don't have time right now to weed through all the ones that have been tagged. Whats going on. Hmmm. PS: Sorry for refering to it as a bot, but things that can edit my user page on their own seem robot-ish to me. I must be a bit old fashion, I suppose. Nesnad (talk) 11:55, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
OMG. OK. Embarrassing moment here. I got my pages mixed up. You're right, your nice upload tool wouldnt have been the one running around thrashing my uploads. It would be a different character, a real bot. I doubled checked and found out my mistake. My bad, I'm the idiot. Thanks for not totally thinking I am a lowlife. Cheers, Nesnad (talk) 11:59, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Critically evaluate Flickr licenses
File:Jennifer Elise Cox (501477839).jpg has been marked as a copyright violation. You may have preserved the information shown on Flickr correctly when transferring the image here, but the Flickr uploader is not the copyright holder of this image. Either the image was created by someone else, or it is a derivative of someone else's work. As stated in Commons:Licensing, only the copyright holder may issue a license, so the one shown on Flickr is invalid. Always remember to critically evaluate Flickr licenses. Photostreams with professional-looking photographs, album covers, posters, and images in a wide range of styles or quality taken by many different cameras often indicate that the Flickr uploader either does not understand or does not care about copyright matters. See Commons:Questionable Flickr images for a list of known bad Flickr users.

Hi Magnus, sometimes sum-it-up produces huge amounts of text. Could you implement an option to have it use Multilingual description? Thank you, Multichill (talk) 11:11, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Ideally, when creating a new category, there would be link that allows to preload the description with this and include interwikis and categories existing at Commons from the corresponding en.wp article as well. The preload could work a bit like the gadget for Information, except that it would work with https too. -- User:Docu at 13:37, 23 December 2009 (UTC)
If this requires too much changes/work, a simpler improvement like the integration with Collapsed would already help. Of course, an automatic include from en:wikipedia at category creation, would help too for categories that have the same name as the article, but I guess that this will become more and more rare. --Foroa (talk) 11:32, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
I noticed that sum-it-up includes the first paragraph of an article. Since in some wikipedia's, they tend to insert images as first paragraph, this results in non usable descriptions (almost systematic on the Swedish wiki). A work around is to drop descriptions that contain an image and if possible, to skip to the next paragraph. --Foroa (talk) 13:56, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Geograph titles

Hi Magnus, Geograph titles get mangled at the moment, see for example File:--en-1=The Roman North Gateway of Lincoln-- - geograph.org.uk - 46594.jpg. A Jira case was opened for this. Multichill (talk) 21:16, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Seems like geograph.org changed something which broke my "parsing". Should be fixed now. --Magnus Manske (talk) 09:28, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

Sabra.jpg

A problem has arisen when your bot transferred the file sabra.jpg (photo of a car) from the Dutch wiki to Wiki Commons. A file by this name already existed on the English wiki (a photo of the wife of a famous architect, William Lee Stoddart). As a result, the Dutch "sabra.jpg" (car photo) has overwritten the English "sabra.jpg" (photo of architect's wife). In the article William Lee Stoddart, there now is a photo of the car where his wife's photo should be.[2]

We have surpassed my technical knowledge of handling wiki image files. I don't know how to undo the damage to the article William Lee Stoddart. How can the two versions of "sabra.jpg" be kept separate, and how can the damage to the article William Lee Stoddart [3] be reversed? Canadian2006 (talk) 05:09, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Two ways: 1) transfer the file from en.wp to Commons under a different (better) name and request deletion on en.wp or 2) request rename for the file on Commons using . --Martin H. (talk) 05:34, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
Note: The problem was of different nature: The image on en.wp was deleted as invalid fair use - the image was a "shadow" of an Commons image, after the deletion on en.wp the image removal bot not cleaned up because he not knows that the image looks a bit different. Sollution here: Remove the image from the article. --Martin H. (talk) 05:39, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Forgot TUSC password

I just did a clean install of my PC but unfortunately forgot my TUSC-password. Could you nuke the entry so I can re-register (I understood that's the only way)? And could 'forgot password' perhaps not be a feature for the future? As otherwise you will might have to do this with any user who forgets his or her password. Or is there another option to retrieve the password for TUSC? --Hardscarf (talk) 18:20, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Done. I've also uploaded your example for testing purposes as File:Barack Obama, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.jpg. --Magnus Manske (talk) 11:10, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Please help replace this outdated license

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

Category:Flickr

Hi Magnus,

As Category:Flickr is now about flickr, would there be a way to avoid that the bot adds it when uploading (e.g. at File:EK Holden panel van.jpg)? A flickr source category is added by template anyways (Admin reviewed Flickr images). An other solution could be to rename the category and delete that one. -- User:Docu at 09:36, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Magnus. Yesterday I started using the new tool "Commons Commander". I used file search to add images to newly created categories. It was fairly quick to select the relevant results and add them to the categories. Excellent work. I added detailed notes below. They are mainly about the specific task I used the tool for, not an overall assessment. -- User:Docu.py at 10:56, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Notes
  • I used a single pane "file search" tab for this. First I tried to start out from the category view. A link like this could help there. Obviously it doesn't work "as is" once there are subcategories. As the categories are new a simple search for the category title does it too.
  • When entering the search term, I pasted the names from the category creation log. Sometimes this added spaces (or tabs?) after the search term. The interface didn't trim those and there is no display that the search didn't return any result (except that the red field on the bottom left disappears).
  • For this initial sorting of images, it was possible to do a selection based on the file names (and the thumbnail). When using Special:Search sometimes the context and the view of the full description (with the "gallery details" gadget) avoids opening each one.
  • When choosing the category to add, pasting the name of an existing category and hitting enter works well. It was less effective to click "ok" instead (this searches first and requires one to select the only result. BTW it's quicker when using a not yet existing category). When typing the name instead, already "Loc" triggered a search and this slows things down.
  • At some point when moving 14 files to "Loch Loyal", I must have hit some throttling or it got stuck somehow. It wasn't possible to restart it from the "File Search" tab with the same selection. Earlier the same happened when adding files to "Loch Affric". Opening a second session to expand "Loch Ard" didn't overcome this.

Hi Magnus. During the last week, I used Commons Commander to categorize a few images (the type that can be done based on thumbnails) and some that can be done after reading descriptions in another browser window. The one click sub-categorization makes it so easy! Great tool. I added more notes below. -- User:Docu.py at 16:24, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Notes 2

Bugs

  • Some categories with diacritics can't be loaded in the category tab, e.g. Category:Niccolò da Tolentino fresco by Andrea del Castagno. This even when navigating along the category tree. It does work in the search tab though (i.e. incategory:"Niccolò da Tolentino fresco by Andrea del Castagno").
  • It tends to time-out/get stuck with longer operations (>30)
  • When moving files - once in a while - it happened to add a new category without removing the old one [4].
  • Possibly sort keys on categories are a source of problem
  • When adding categories, occasionally, it happened to add the same category twice
  • Sometimes the file search allows to view only the first set of results (gets stuck). It seems to happen always with the same search.
  • After processing a series of changes on large categories (>1000), it tends to go blank when returning to the category view.
  • It's possible to add the same category twice, once with " ", once with "_".
  • On the confirmation screen when processing more files than can be displayed on the screen, one has to remember to tab to the bottom of the screen.

Features

  • when moving files already in the target category, an easy way to remove the initial category would be good (this could be the default action)
  • once a series of images selected, it would be convenient if one could filter the list for that selection (to review them prior to processing)
  • when selecting a series of images, the possibility to view just an additional one would make things easier (to decide if to add or not)
  • for less experienced users, there should be a way to review the changes on a log (possibly applying the pretty log gadget with thumbnails on user contributions) and revert them easily (I had to fix several edits of mine too)
  • As the changes aren't added to one's watchlist, it isn't easy to see if someone reverts edits
  • To process larger categories, a sort "by date the image was added to the category" would be helpful (to review only recent additions). Not sure if that information is readily available in one way or the other.
  • The additional feature I'd love to see first would be the possibility to load a list of images for processing (or interfacing the tool with catscan2)

BTW, please reset my tusc account.

NUKE my tusc account

Somehow, in my brilliance when making a TUSC account my password is a bizarre typo I can't figure out. Can you please nuke it so I can start over? Thanks, NativeForeigner (talk) 04:44, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Done. I saw you had signed up with your en.wp account. Note that in order to use tools with TUSC for Commons, you'll need to sign up your Commons account as well. --Magnus Manske (talk) 21:05, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
In that case would I maintain multiple accounts on TUSC: one for enwp, one for commons, and another one for any additional language? NativeForeigner (talk) 00:09, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
Yes, for each language/project you want to use tools with TUSC for. My system predates SUL, so... If you only want it for Commons, sign up only for Commons. --Magnus Manske (talk) 21:57, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Translation

Hi, I would like to translate your tools to Hindi, and therefore request you to please provide me with the necessary terms that I need to translate. Currently I have finished translating Soxreds Edit counter to Hindi and am doing Huggle to Hindi. I have friends who are collaborating for other languages including Marathi, Samskrit and Malayalam. Please do let me know, if it is okay with you.. Regards, --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 20:14, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi! First, thanks for the offer. Sadly, I don't support multi-language for most of my tools - yet. There is CatScan2 and CommonsHelper that support it. This can be localized by editing pages on http://meta.wikipedia.org. See the tool headers for links. Cheers, --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:13, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

[5] I love your tools, but I never seen such a mess. I don't think this one was quite ready for a public release. Besides the obvious template issues, it got the license wrong, didn't fill in the source, made up a "Location" parameter, spelled "Transferred" wrong, used the wrong header, and overall general sloppiness. Please take it offline until you fix these things if you're not actively working on it so users who don't check/care don't use it. Thanks. Rocket000 (talk) 01:20, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

geograph_org2commons new version offered

Please pick up the source code of g2c.php. [NB. Already out of date - use g3c.php - see below.] I believe that this is a plug-in replacement for geograph_org2commons.php. All it needs is:

  • add wf_funs.php to the directory
  • enable two exit() statements.

This version incorporates the following changes:

  • add the full description text from the geograph page - this brings this tool up to the same level as the GeographBot
  • add the "near to ..." or "3km from ..." line - this puts the tool one ahead of the Geograph Bot!
  • add sha1 checking - see below.

Sha1 checking will detect a case such as Geonums 426534 and 426595 which has been uploaded without a proper Geograph tag. Sha1 checking is applied by the GeographBot, by FileDuplicateSearch and by the main upload tool. I recommend that you incorporate it into all your upload tools.

The externallinks check should be retained. This will detect cases such as:

  • PucklechurchYOI.jpg where the photographer has uploaded an higher res version
  • Castle Tioram where an image 9920 pixels wide has somehow managed to reach the GeographBot!
  • West top, Wether Hill where the geograph version will not upload because of a known bug in the MediaWiki software.

Incidentally

Please see my version of database_functions.php. This is not needed in connection with the above mods but please tell me: is there a good reason why you do not use parse_ini_file() to get the password?

And please, why does error_reporting(E_ALL) have no effect? I am sick of my programs crashing with a blank screen!

Commons Commander

Just wondering, do you intend to develop this further? If yes, I would be available to do further testing. -- User:Docu at 19:57, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

I would like to, and you'd be welcome as a tester, but currently I'm a little short on time. I guess my next work on Commons Commander will be to port it to work directly within Commons, so that others can work on the code as well. --Magnus Manske (talk) 08:46, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

For me, the current version works fairly well (I did maybe 5k edits). Of the bugs listed above, problematic seem to be the one with special characters in category view (maybe elsewhere) and the one when moving categories with a sortkey. Maybe these make it stop on some images too. Thus, I hesitate to suggest it to less technically inclined users. Once these work, I could create a page about it here and collect more feeedback. Porting it to Commons would make it easier to follow its edits (maybe through a new usergroup), but I wouldn't be able to help much with the code. Obviously, for extensions that aren't activated, the port is probably the last time someone works on them ;). So, at least for Commons, toolserver is a core part. -- User:Docu at 11:04, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

geograph_org2commons - big images

Please pick up the source code of g3c.php. I believe that this is a plug-in replacement for geograph_org2commons.php. All it needs is:

  • add wf_funs.php to the directory
  • enable two exit() statements.

This version incorporates the following changes:

  • sha1 checking, etc - see above
  • detect when a Geograph image bigger than 640px is available and use it.

We have already had more than one case such as another Santander branch where geograph_org2commons has uploaded the low res version and this has had to be replaced by the high res one. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 11:59, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Mazedonische bilder

Hallo M_M. There are three photo albums on Flickr that can be uploaded on Commons. Can you upload that pictures with the help of your bot? The pictures are with Free Licence and it would be nice if they have the Category:Ethnological section (Museum of Macedonia). If it is possible, the bot can add the description: An artefact in the Ethnological section of the Museum of Macedonia, Skopje as well and I will go through them once again. Here are the photostreams: [9], [10] and [11]. Danke im voraus--R ašo 20:12, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Would I be honored by your answer?--R ašo 16:27, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
Hi, I'm doing things as fast as I can, wayyyyy to much stuff on my hands... Short answer: No, my bot can't do that. However, I might be able to write a wrapper around it so that it can. Give me a day or two here ;-) Another thing: If these images all have the same source (as in museum, not Flickr), wouldn't it make more sense to create a template for this, instead of adding a fixed text and category? --Magnus Manske (talk) 19:07, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
My point was the bot to upload all images with the existing description and category, and after that I will add proper description plus additional categories. I have many pictures that are ready for uploading, and with these 250 I will stuck even more. That's why I think uploading by bot is the best solution. Thanks--R ašo 20:40, 26 April 2010 (UTC) P.S. Dear Magnus,

I am currently putting some order in Commons' category Geranium.

I have a problem with your two pictures Geranium cantabrigiense 'Biokovo' (Geraniaceae) plant and Geranium cantabrigiense 'Biokovo' (Geraniaceae) flower. The flowers you are seeing on these pictures are not of Geranium ×cantabrigiense 'Biokovo' but of Anemone blanda, which is growing among the leaves of the not yet flowering Geranium.

I think you should revise the description of these pictures accordingly.

Restricting the use of the bot

I hope so, but in some cases it might be a bit harsh. OK anyway. Additional question, is there a way to track the pictures recently uploaded by a given user (through the bot)? Might be useful when it's not clear whether a block is needed or not. Thanks in advance, --Eusebius (talk) 16:14, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Duplicate uploaded from Flickr

Hello,

I saw that a user has just uploaded a duplicate from Flickr at File:Lift Off- Best Viewed Large.jpg by using your bot. Doesn't your bot check (and refuses to upload) duplicates as Bryan's Flickr upload tool is doing ? Teofilo (talk) 09:02, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

It checks by external URL on the description page. Maybe the URL was different, or there was none on the description page. SHA1 checking would be more complicated, and IMHO not worth the effort (identical duplicates are routinely removed from Commons, no matter the source). --Magnus Manske (talk) 22:02, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
It was duplicating File:Louise Docker - Lift Off- Best Viewed Large (by).jpg, I think. Teofilo (talk) 19:24, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Hello, Magnus Manske!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I visited the article about Lykurgus of Sparta an I missed some more information about the source of the foto / picture of Lykurgus, which you uploaded once. Could you help me and tell me please which book or other source the foto was taken from exactly.

Hi Jens, it would be helpful to include a link to the image in question, so I know which one you're talking about. If the image was transferred with my upload bot, then most likely I don't have anything to do with it; please check the image description for the original uploader (try the line named "author"). --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:32, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

thanks for your response. I'm sorry, I'm afraid my acknowledges on Wikipedia are too small, but I'm trying... This is the Link to the foto: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Lycurgus.jpg Maybe the author is "Larsinio", but I'm not sure. His page is deleted.

Thanks for your help und Bye! Jens

You are correct, the original uploader was Larsinio on en.wikipedia, whose user page was deleted, apparently at his own request. The Wayback Machine has a copy, though. Maybe you can track him down. Good luck! --Magnus Manske (talk) 19:09, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

CC and charsets

Hi Magnus, I tried to figure out how to fix the charset problem in the php code, but it isn't really my type of thing. Maybe it helps if I just list where it works correctly and where it doesn't. As test string I used "Antoni Gaudí" (e.g. Category:Antoni Gaudí).

  • Category view:
    • Show category with "Antoni Gaudí" displays "Antoni Gaud"
    • Show category with "Modernisme architects from Catalonia" displays the subcategory correctly, but clicking on it doesn't work
    • It's possibly to add the category "Antoni Gaudí" to files in other categories, e.g. here.
  • File search view
    • "Search files" with Antoni Gaudí works.
    • "Search files" with incategory:"Antoni Gaudí" works.
  • Category search
    • "Search categories" with "Antoni Gaudí" works, but clicking on categories doesn't.

It could be that the display part and the api part work, but the SQL one doesn't. Hope this helps. -- User:Docu at 17:41, 17 June 2010 (UTC), updated 06:09, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Good news: When calling category display through the url, "Antoni Gaudí" gets converted to "Antoni Gaudí" and displays the category. -- User:Docu at 08:29, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
As that workaround solves part of the issue, I started a documentation page at Commons:Tools/cc and made a request to add a gadget at MediaWiki_talk:Gadgets-definition#CC. BTW, for screenshots, what license must I use? -- User:Docu at 09:11, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

British Museum

Hi Magnus, nice to have met the man who makes the tools at the British Museum. Cheers. The follow up day on the Hoxne Hoard went well yesterday. I think an FA will emerge. What I think I have is an offer of hundreds - possibly a lot more - images from an employee/ Flickr user of pictures relevant to the BM. (This is not "a steal"). The BM allowed us to take approved pictures in the backrooms this time! So a) is there a way to get 100s of images moved from Flickr. Oh and I'm having a license issue reported from your Flickr2Commons tool but the picture is only "attribution only" - any ideas? Victuallers (talk) 09:36, 26 June 2010 (UTC) this flickr pic - solved (you?) the transfer of that pic problem Victuallers (talk) 10:49, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Glad that it worked, I don't think I solved it though - cc-by should have worked for many month now... As for the mass transfer - If it is the entire photostream of the user, you can try my other tool. Right now, I can't specify a subset, so it would transfer all valid-licensed ones; but if you can give me a tag/set/etc. to filter by, I could code something... --Magnus Manske (talk) 11:00, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Magnus, I suspect this will be all from that stream, bar those with the wrong license. I'll look and see what can be done. Back soon! Victuallers (talk) 11:08, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

I'm testing myself, but there seems to be a problem with the API. Trying to fix it now. --Magnus Manske (talk) 11:12, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
I added an option to use the user name instead of the stream URL. Using "portableantiquities" will work. --Magnus Manske (talk) 11:41, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for asking Magnus. I was away for the weekend. I left some messages for the owners on Flickr to see if we could get some cataloguing information that might tell us more about the pictures and make sure they we well categorised. However, no reply. I'm thinking of having a go tomorrow. Do I need to register with the "mass transfer people" or just DO it?

I'm guessing you may be able to help me delete the lot if it turns out badly :-) Victuallers (talk) 14:18, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

I don't have a "deleteobot" (yet!), but since the images are already (a) on a non-BM site, and (b) marked CC, I doubt we"ll cause much harm. Did you ask Liam for his opinion? --Magnus Manske (talk) 17:05, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Liam was aware. I'm sure there are no license issues. This was discussed openly at the BM. My only concern was making a mistake and realising it could be done better. 17:14, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Then it's "only" to think about a good description to add to all these files automatically (if any), good templates and categories. Maybe a special "BM coin collection" template, if only to keep it flexible and trackable after the deed? --Magnus Manske (talk) 17:36, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Magnus, I had a go and kept it going for the first 930 goes. There are 3,000 pics approx at Portableantiquities.

Questions
  1. All of these are loaded under my TUSC account - how can I see which one loaded successfully?
  2. Is there a way that I can load just some.... rather than all?
  3. I stopped it prematurely .... can I restart?

I had a lot of pictures that gave the message

Catchable fatal error: Object of class FlinfoRaw could not be converted to string in /home/www/kunden/ramselehof.de/wikipedia/flinfo/FlinfoOut.php on line 128

Cheers Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 21:56, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Point 1 and 3 complement each other - the tool shouldn't upload a file twice, so just restart and see. If nothing gets uploaded, it's all done :-) As for uploading some, just let it run for a while, then stop it. I'll add an option later. The error message is from someone elses tool (http://wikipedia.ramselehof.de/flinfo.php) I juse to generate wiki descriptions of flickr images. I've now prevented these buggy descriptions from being uploaded. --Magnus Manske (talk) 06:38, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
I have added a "maximum transfer" option, and a keyword filter matrix. Also, there's a simulation option that will run everything as usual except the actual file transfer - you can see what WOULD happen with certain settings. If you're bored, this shows a list of putatively damaged image transfers due to the flinfo bug (though I have fixed many of them manually) - find them on Flickr and put the URL in here, then copy the correct wikitext over. --Magnus Manske (talk) 22:55, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Well done. Seems to be a bug though as it does not add the categories that you allow users to specify. The simulation mode is excellent! Could you help? Victuallers (talk) 22:30, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Should work now. --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:55, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

--Martin H. (talk) 02:04, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
