Hello, M.Tarnowski!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Ppłk. Jan Tarnowski (ps Lelek, Waligóra).JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

File:Bohaterowie Grecji.pdf has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Re: Bohaterowie Grecji[edit]

Dear Ellin Beltz!

What exactly is the problem? Translations published in weekly "Ruch literacki" in 1876, so it's not a problem. The original from which the translation was made was issued in 1862. Pictures did I, my own camera, so it's not a problem. I did the a PDF file, so it's also not a problem. The file PDF contains all the translations published in the weekly "Ruch literacki" in 1876, so it's also not a problem. What's the problem? Do not make me guess the riddle of the Sphinx. Is the point that the translation does not include all the original chapters? I can not fix it, for lack of time machine.

M.Tarnowski (talk) 16:10, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings M.Tarnowski: I am moving your question here, under the deletion notification to put it all in one place. The nomination reads "Image of book, outside of COM:SCOPE." If you follow the link to COM:SCOPE, you will find that some things are within the scope of the project and others are not. This upload fell outside of the "Excluded educational content" specifically "Files that contain nothing educational other than raw text. Purely textual material such as plain-text versions of recipes, lists of instructions, poetry, fiction, quotations, dictionary definitions, lesson plans or classroom material, and the like are better hosted elsewhere, for example at Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wiktionary, Wikiversity or Wikisource." Perhaps one of those places would be a better host for the file? Just so you know, I had an image deleted too and felt hurt about it. I realize that the rules and limitations on Wikimedia Commons may seem harsh, but please don't take it personally? We do look forward to content you create which does fall within COM:SCOPE. With best wishes! Ellin Beltz (talk) 19:13, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ellin, I have to say that Commons:Deletion requests/File:Bohaterowie Grecji.pdf is one of the most ridiculous deletion request I have seen in a long time. Commons hosts over half a million of files of "text" files (just look at files using Book). Most of them are then used by Wikisource projects to verify the transcription of the scan. Files used on other projects are by default "in scope". The COM:SCOPE you quoted you forgot to include the second part of this policy: "However, Commons can be used to host such material if included in a shareable media file that is of use to one of the other Wikimedia Foundation-hosted (WMF) projects (so, scanned copies of existing texts that are useful to other WMF projects—e.g. to serve as the basis of a reliable, verifiable source—are in scope). Also allowed are files which embody something of value over and above raw text. For example, files consisting of scans of out-of-copyright books, newspapers and the like which preserve original font, layout, embedded images and the like are within scope." You have just caused deletion of file used by s:pl:Indeks:Bohaterowie_Grecji_(Yemeniz) and I have no clue why user:Fastily deleted the file. --Jarekt (talk) 19:44, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's the "of use" part of what you quote that I believe put the pdf out of scope because the files had to have shown to be in use for educational purposes. Reading the scope this file appeared to me to be out of scope due to lack of use. I was certain that one of the source projects would be able to host this file, but that it fell out of the scope by not being in use. I do not know exactly why Fastly agreed with me; I am sure they also looked and did not see a link to the use. What I'm wondering is why the link to s:pl:Indeks:Bohaterowie_Grecji_(Yemeniz) didn't show, and why no one mentioned it on the deletion nomination? Either one of those might have stopped the process. Commons operates under the "Assume Good Faith Rule" and of course there was no intent to cause any harm by the nomination. I am sorry you are upset, there was no intention to cause difficulty. Ellin Beltz (talk) 05:10, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, alright, let's not get into too heated a discussion. Tarnowski, could you please provide a link as to what page this image was used on? Then we can simply fix this by sending it to Commons:Undeletion requests. For future reference, Commons mainly only allows content provided they're in use in other Wikimedia projects, which are usually checked through the GlobalUsage extension. I'll make the request for you. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 06:35, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I sounded upset, It just so often I hear from people from other projects about how unpredictable and frustrating it is to deal with Commons community and how often they get their files deleted without understanding why. The reasons usually are related to copyrights rules which are incomprehensible to a lot of users. From wikisource user point of view: they are suppose to upload the book scans to commons, they need to get the license right and text should be by a notable author or about notable subject. I am sure a lot of book scans are not used yet on the wikisource projects, but they do not need to be used they need to be "of use" or in scope of the wikisource. It is the same as with photographs: they have to be potentially useful for educational purpose on one of the wikimedia projects, not necessarily "in use". Many people from other project are not active on Commons (which is often perceived as very unfriendly place) so they do not notice when their files are just about to get deleted, so you should not be surprised if nobody noticed this DR. I am just surprised that two admins would be misinterpreting the policy like that. I never assumed that there was any bad intentions, but may be we should move this discussion to the com:scope talk page and/or Village Pump to see (1) if my interpretation is shared among others and if so (2) how to clarify com:scope so it is harder to misinterpret. --Jarekt (talk) 15:47, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Zdjęcia - fotoszopki - a obrazy[edit]

Masur (talk) 17:39, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi, I undeleted the files now, but raised a regular deletion request for them. In short: Your authorship an sources should be clarified through Commons:OTRS. For details see the deletion request page. Your comments there are very wellcome. regards. --JuTa 20:00, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
M.Tarnowski, JuTa doesn't hate you, they're merely doing their job as an admin here. We regularly delete images like this - we are very concerned with copyright here, and sometimes that means we can delete things which may be ok, because we don't know that they are ok. That is the case here. We actually do this for the painters out there - we don't want your hard work released into the world for free without your permission. -mattbuck (Talk) 21:36, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Incredible, they deleted my files where the copyright has expired, whose authors died often in the nineteenth century! Therefore, never more my own images on Wikimedia Commons. And on my side already are or will be published.

Thanks for uploading File:Pok+-j Towarzyski fot. A. Ring.jpg.

Thank you.

And also:

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please check my FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 19:32, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Krzysztofa Stopki „Z Prac Archiwum Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego” – 3 tom w serii C: „Corpus Studiosorum Universitatis Iagiellonicae in saeculis XVIII-XX”, Archiwum Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie, Księgarnia Akademicka, Kraków, 2015, str. 31.).

136 ([2]. Widzisz możliwość uzupełnienia braku (najlepiej wgranie pojedynczej strony w formacie jpg)?

Pozdrawiam Draco flavus (talk) 20:38, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Drogi Draco flawus! @Draco flavus:

 2. W tym konkretnie wypadku Steganacyny, to jeśli macie lepszą ilustrację to wstawcie.
