Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries) or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. Critters in the city

Yes the improved description helps. But I still don't think it has that wow factor to turn it from a QI into a FP. In the list of criteria I suggested for illustrations:

1. Highly detailed or photo realistic or animated
2. visually appealing
3. use colour well
4. Often of something familiar but showing detail not illustratable by a photograph

I think it scores on the first, but I don't think the colours are appealing or really bring out the subject (they may or course be realistic, but then its difficult to make a visually un-interesting thing into an interesting one :-). It half achieves the fourth - it illustrates something well that would be difficult to show in a photograph - but it's not of something familiar, so doesn't grab peoples interest (and hence no 'wow' :-). Lastly I must acknowledge Alvesgaspar and agree that the cut away edge is not clear, there should be edges/corners where the cutaway section surface goes from the front end around to the side and where the side cutaway stops and the parapod cutaway starts (I suppose technically I think there should be edges where the section plane surfaces intersect). Do you know what I mean?. I see you've now got enough support votes to get it promoted, so you don't need mine just yet :-) --Tony Wills 10:41, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Your Namibia adventure

Hi Lycaon, you are going to go to one of my favorite places on Earth!
Namib desert and Sossusvlei region in particular will give you an unforgettable experience.
As a landscape photographer I consider Sossusvlei 2nd only to Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni.

Definitely you'll have to be in Sossusvlei at sunrise when the gates open.
At sunrise and sunset dunes are ochre, half shaded with edges well delineated, under midday light they are only dull yellow hills.

Do not stop at Elim Dune first unless a spingbok is there to pose for you.
Elim is the prettiest dune closer to gate and you can spend there your last hour until the gate close.
At first drive directly to Dune 45, the most photographed one, put on your tripod and begin your photo journey.
When people around you are too many, take a deep breath and begin to climb that ugly dune.
When you'll have reached the top your efforts will be rewarded with a stunning view with rows of dunes as far as you can see.
Do not forghet your compass! Passed the first row of dunes you'll be alone and you can easily get lost.
On your way back don't forget to take some picures with people climbing, or no one at home will trust you on real dimensions of this "beach".
Now head toward Dead Vlei, an hour walk over soft sand from the 2WD car park. Even if you have a 4WD car leave it there to enjoy the sand.
Obviously there is a lot more to see in Sossusvlei and in Namibia but these have been my favorite spots.

They were somewhere lost in process. I used a HDR-Tool to generate a Pseudo-HDR from the RAW, that generated no EXIF-data, I think. After tonemapping, exporting and postprocessing with Photoshop, there were only Photoshop-tags in the metadata. Bye --LC-de 06:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

FP identification

Sounds good, though maybe 'essential' is a bit too strong as I could envisage the occasional exception, for example a really good picture of some organism where species-level identification is very difficult. What about "For photographs of living organisms, identification to the species level is normally expected. The proper scientific (Latin) name should be stated". --MichaelMaggs 16:10, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Specifying 'species' level would bias FP toward higher organisms as it is much more difficult with insects and other lower order animals (you probably need the animal dead and a microscope to examine it, and be an expert). I think identifying things to a reasonable degree, and actually fitting them into the scientific naming scheme somewhere is the important point, then the people maintaining that branch can use their expertise for finer classification. The other point is that FP reviewers are probably not qualified to determine whether the classification is correct (and if we are then why not correct the classification rather than failing the image! :-) --Tony Wills 21:15, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Partly agreed. At the other hand, I almost always do feel qualified to confirm an identification, but not always to provide one. I would expect everyone to do at least the effort to identify the organism on her/his picture. Asking other users qualifies for me as a valid effort. I just don't appreciate flower with (or without) bee pictures that turn out to be a simple daisy with a hoverfly. I got a scholarship to study in Taiwan on 2007-2008, and I plan to go back to live for 5 years in this island (2008 ? => 2013 ?), to improve my Chinese. I encourage you to keep in touch with me, especially around 2010. By this time, I will probably be "healthy" enough (have time to have vacations) to received some friends, guide them across the island, and learn many things from them on the way ;).

Railway Viaduct perspective

Hi Lycaon,

Google for 17. Oktober 2006, Kübelbachviadukt, Dornstetten, Deutschland to see a few more views of this bridge. Even from further away a planar perspective introduces quite some distortion making the pillars look unnaturally wide. Probably not relevant for FPC, but even further back houses get into the way, and from the other side of the bridge you do not get proper sunlight. Animals of xyz

Hi, I do not understand your reason for this type of edit? Are you assuming "Animals of xyz" categories are only for animals photographed in those countries? Rather than categories to allow people to find collections of species that are found in those countries? --Tony Wills 12:58, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tony. Yes, that was indeed my assumption. The categories would become unwieldy. It is a good idea to do that in Wikipedia with articles (there is e.g. only one article about a lion) not with individuals pictures. It might also be conceivable here in commons with articles covering a single species. If we had to categorize every single picture of a lion (e.g.) under every category Animals of xyz which would be applicable together with every picture of every other species that occurs in that particular country, those categories would become huge and totally impracticable. Hi, thanks for copying your reply to my talk page, I had noticed your reply but have been suffering from a bit of 'flu (the joys of winter ;-). But my head is just about back to normal now :-). Yes I agree that classifying every animal in these categories would be excessive, personally I would classify each species in these categories rather than individual images. But it does have its pitfalls, for instance with widespread or migratory animals - eg some birds migrate from the siberian tundra to New Zealand, it does not make much sense having pictures of them feeding in the tundra turning up under a "Bird of New Zealand" category. Your interpretation certainly has merit although I think the categories would be better named "Animals in xyz". Perhaps we need both types of categorization, perhaps neither are actually useful ;-) --Tony Wills 22:04, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

White balance

• What editing software did you use to change the white balance? I have looked in Gimp and Photoshop CS2 and I couldn't find anything to change the white balance. --Digon3 ^talk 15:07, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
  • I use Corel Paintshop Pro XI. The tool is called colour balance and it does some pretty nifty things. I'm sure CS2 must have an equivalent function. BTW, I very much appreciate these tools & tips :-). Lycaon 16:51, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello Lycaon, you may already be aware of the FPC status of this panorama of yours. Really nice view, but I think you should stitch it again and either before the stitch or in the stitching process itself correct the vignetting of your lense. I personally use hugin, and the latest beta 5 actually determines the correction all by itself. If you have a Mac, then I can tell you where to get this latest beta binary, otherwise I could offer you some help. -- Klaus with K 20:01, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

There is an older snapshot that has
the vignetting correction function available at:
http://hugin.sf.net/snapshots/windows
however, it has problems with 16bit images,
but the vignetting correction should work.

I see you have uploaded a newer version of the Sossusvlei panorama. At full size I notice that some flaws or dust specks in the sky have disappeared. But what I do not like, and I noticed that already at less than full magification are some kind of horizontal lines that appear in the sky. Looks to me that you applied an anisotropic filter. Also the grain (well, noise with a digital camera) is missing from the sky. -- Klaus with K 17:21, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
