DerivativeFX doesn't recognize CopyrightByWikimedia

Although it's not a free license, we do host files with CopyrightByWikimedia. Could you add it to DerivativeFX so I can more easily upload derivatives of the new Wikibooks logo? Thanks  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:40, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Done in r140.--Luxo 17:31, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! Can you add Gray's Anatomy plate please?  — Mike.lifeguard 04:11, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

I will do it. But it should be called PD-Gray's Anatomy plate if you want some structures in the license templates... Then it would be also accepted by the tool as public domain.--Luxo 16:07, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Also please add Cc-pd. Thanks! SharkD (talk) 13:17, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Done.--Luxo 13:21, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

The script for derived works on Commons insists "Sorry", that I am using a bad browser. The same happened earlier with SeaMonkey 1.1.x (Gecko 1.9) on the Mac, I think or Windows. Please fix. :)

Best not to sniff like you do, because lots of browsers don't have the user-agent string you are apparently looking for, but can handle your script anyway.:) It's only getting in the way.

And thanks for a great tool. --Mareklug talk 10:50, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

P.s. It turns out I can't use this tool at all on Debian. Make a suggestion for the user, that the browser might have trouble, but don't prevent editing. And please provide a "no, thanks, I know what I'm doing" button.

Hm strange, the tool don't check which browser you have. I assume you have turn off your javascript. Read the message: "You must have a browser which support the JavaScript-standards of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to use this tool." - but I see that this message is not very good, I will update it.--Luxo 15:32, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Problems identifying file

The derivative upload tool cannot find File:Szurdak&Pepin.JPG. AjaxSmack (talk) 16:53, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Specifically, I get a "File doesn't exist!" using Firefox and a "Loading...Please wait" that hangs using IE. AjaxSmack (talk) 17:16, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
Fixed, was a little bug because of the & in the title.--Luxo 18:09, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

More help needed

I've progressed a little further with this but cannot upload because of "Please complete author information for the following images: - File:Szurdak&Pepin.JPG". The original author is listed at that page -- what else is needed? AjaxSmack (talk) 19:59, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

it's listed at that page, but the tool can't detect it. replace PLEASE COMPLETE AUTHOR INFORMATION in the Summary with the original author, then it works. --Luxo 21:18, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for all your work on this. It recognised it this time and the upload went fine. AjaxSmack (talk) 01:17, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

The utility for derivative works failing

Need helpful programmer to help new programmer

Hello, French user fr:user:Blr is close to finish an application who 'generate SVG maps' by large series, according to data provided by users, and one SVG source map provided.

Blr is interested by :

  • toolserver.org : how to get his application working there ? can you assist him ?
  • your upload application DerivateFX : his application generated SVG maps will ALL be derivated from commons ones, accordingly, his application will be highly strengthen if able to directly upload to commons, using DerivateFX. How to process to make Blr's code and DerivateFX work together ?

OR,

  • can you include Blr's map generator code to your tool DerivateFX?, we are looking for ideas and solutions.

I asked to Blr to contact you, hope you may provide some keys to let the DerivateFX assist this other script !~ :] Yug (talk) 02:12, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

hi Yug. If he like a toolserver account, he can request one at meta:Toolserver/New_accounts. I cannot say if I'm interested about this because I don't understand what this application exactly does. But I can say that directly upload to commons from a Tool without saving the file on the computer of the user is technical not possible. Greetings, --Luxo 11:16, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Zwei Fragen

Hast Du Ahnung was schief läuft?

Gruss, --Luxo 16:39, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

derivativeFX translation

Hi Luxo,

is there a language file for derivativeFX? I would be happy to make a Hungarian translation.

--Tgr (talk) 20:43, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Tgr. Yes, you find it here. There is a plan to use the translatewiki.net for translating toolserver tools, so in future the messages will be stored there. Because of that I don't make ad to translate it, otherwise I must move all messages 'by hand' to translatewiki later. But you can gladly translate it, one language more or less doesn't make any difference. Greetings, --Luxo 11:55, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I've put the translated text below. AFAIK translatewiki can import gettext files, so instead of manually uploading, you can just do something like this:

require("language.php");
for ($lng as $langcode => $strings) {
  $f = fopen("$langcode.po", "wt");
  for ($strings as $msgctxt => $msgstr) {
    $msgid = $lng['en'][$msgctxt];
    $s = <<<STR
msgctxt "derivativefx-$msgctxt"
msgid "$msgid"
msgstr "$msgstr"

STR;
    fprintf($f, $str);
  }
  fclose($f);
}

and then have the translatewiki devs import the .po files. (Not quite accurate as you will need to do some escaping on the strings, and possibly add headers, but gives you the idea.) Alternatively, you could upload it via pywikipediabot.

Also, could you add uselang to the login link on the first page so that the user can see the form in his own language?

thanks --Tgr (talk) 19:10, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Added, thanks. For the text in the image ("%s kép feltöltve!") I have removed the special characters because the font don't have this characters. I will search a other free font which support this. I will also think about the gettext files, thanks for the idea! greetings,--Luxo 22:48, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

File:Coleanthus subtilis Thome.jpg

Was läuft falsch? Gruß und Danke im Voraus--IKAl (talk) 12:31, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Bildinformationen gehen verloren

Hi Luxo - the direction of the sun doesn't matter; the specimen is lying on the ground, and the sun could easily shine through from behind the photographer. The way I'd set the photo shows the cones in their natural orientation for a photo on a vertical computer monitor (open side pointing downwards, thick stem at the base), instead if upside-down. Tree branches don't get thicker higher up the tree! If you don't mind, I'll put it back - MPF (talk) 18:34, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes, they lying on the ground, but for me it looks like the image is upside down. :-) But I'll don't bar you to revert it, it's up to you. Greetings,--Luxo 22:28, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

rotate very little

Hallo. Kannst Du da 'was tun? Danke, -jkb- (cs.source) 12:27, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Gruss, --Luxo 21:45, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Spitze. Gimp habe ich mir notiert. Hab' vielen Dank! -jkb- (cs.source) 22:39, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Cropbot

Cropbot doesn't work, When I click on the crop button[1] it says: Cropbot File:

JavaScript and cookies must been enabled.--sk (talk) 16:19, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

It's not a browser or js-problem, this message (js and cookies) is every time there. The problem is the php session on the toolserver, ts-admins fix it shortly. Greetings,--Luxo 23:40, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
It's fixed, should not happen again.--Luxo 11:01, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

derivativeFX and OTRS

Hello there, I have a weird message pop up every time I try to use derivativeFX for file that have unusual license tags. One of the pictures that I've used while making this banner has special OTRS licence, and it seems like your tool doesn't know how to deal with it. Could you please do something about it? Thanks in advance. --Ahnode (talk) 19:20, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

the popup is fixed, reason was a Content-Type change of mediawiki. OTRS is not a license, it provides only a link to a verification mail that the image is really under the mentioned license. So your file is in fact a copyright violation because e.g. File:Jolanda keizer.jpg is licensed under GFDL, File:Poh Seng Song IVP.jpg and File:New York marathon Verrazano bridge.jpg under CC-by-sa, which are incompatible. OTRS was not right under "licenses" in the tool, I have fixed it. Greetings,--Luxo 23:26, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Does this have to do anything with compatibility? And even before when I used the tool it would sometimes dismiss some of the licences and put up one of the latest present. So if you have any suggestions for me, please, I'd be glad to hear them. --Ahnode (talk) 00:03, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
After such a license migration it should be possible; but I'm not very sure about that; can you ask for this at Commons talk:Licensing? Greetings,--Luxo 11:00, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

derivativeFX stalls

Hi! I'm trying to upload a new version of File:Zimelidine.png that has been changed into SVG, but derivativeFX just "hangs" on clicking the OK, next button when I entered the file name in that pretty display page. Is this something that has to do with the fact that I use Safari? Where next Columbus? (talk) 15:37, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Oh, nevermind. Several minutes (!) after clicking the button, it finally continues. Thanks for the tool, by the way. Where next Columbus? (talk) 15:40, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
sometime Toolserver is overloaded.--Luxo 15:29, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

DW notice

It's nice to add DW notices on image pages (on which basis does the bot do it?), but it may look not so nice sometimes: [2] --Eusebius (talk) 06:55, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

DerivativeFX problem with modified image from US federal government source

Hi, I'm having a problem uploading a modified version of an image I got from Wikimedia Commons ("Illu01_head_neck.jpg"). Although this image is in the public domain, I'm getting a "License not found" message when I enter the filename in DerivativeFX. Would you have you any suggestion for how I can get it past this point? I previously uploaded another modified image using DerivativeFX and found it very convenient by the way. Thanks.

It was a bug in the license detection script, It's fixed. Thanks, --Luxo 14:15, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Worked perfectly. Thanks a lot!

Bot added other version field when one already existed

You may want to review this edit wherein the bot added another "other version" paramater at the top of the information template. This would've been OK if the other other version was a derivative as well, but it was the original. Perhaps the original is not supposed to appear there?xeno talk 17:37, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

It was a bug, problem was that the O of | other_versions = was upper case, because of that he don't found the existing section. He is now case insensitivity. Thanks,--Luxo 11:10, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

CropBot Anregungen

Hallo Luxo!

Lieben Gruss, --Nyks (talk) 15:19, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

--Nyks (talk) 10:59, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Genial, super ... vielen Dank! --Nyks (talk) 19:09, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Login problem with cropbot

Alleridings bekomme ich nur die Fehlermeldung "A user with the name prolineserver already exist! Please note that this tool use the same login like gWatch. If you have a account there, you can use the login datas from there for login. If you don't have a account there, notify User:Luxo on his talkpage." Wenn ich dagegen ein falsches Passwort eingebe, erhalte ich "username or password not correct. It seems that you don't have a TUSC account. You can create one here."

Ganz schön kopliziert, was? :)--Luxo 16:24, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Gruss aus Stockholm, Prolineserver (talk) 12:07, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi!
He will add the notice, see the button you checked: "Add a notice to the original file(s) about this derivative work. (by 'User:Bilderbot', at 02:00 UTC)"
a preview is not easy to develop, but I will add it to my ToDo-list, I will look what I can do.

Thanks and a bug report

Thanks for the upload tool, but I'm having a bit of trouble uploading a derivative of File:Mnemosyne_1.x_logo.png. It properly recognizes the license on the "original files" page, but when I go to upload it has GPLv2 only marked under "Unknown templates". --L33tminion (talk) 04:33, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi, now it know what GPLv2 only is ;). Thanks, --Luxo 15:15, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Derivative FX

Well, how to say... I must be stupid, or your tool [3] is really cryptic to use... Why isn't there any file picker ? What must we write after "file:" ??? Just wanna upload a corrected version of [4] (better centering) ...

--Tomates Mozzarella (talk) 07:39, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

If you like to overwrite the file, you don't need derivativeFX, then you can use the link "Upload a new version of this file" at the end of the description page. You can use derivativeFX if you like to upload it under a new file name. In this field you must enter the original file name, in this case it's "File:B1.svg" (direct link). Then derivativeFX creates for you the a description page for the new file. In step 3 you find your file picker for your work. :-) Greetings,--Luxo 14:26, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
Thx for your very clear response ;-) Then, in fact my problem seems to be elsewhere since I can't find any "Upload a new version of this file" link on file description page, and anywhere else... I just have a "Edit this file using an external application" a the end of "File history" paragraph. Any idea where does it come from ? Because of my recent registration on WikiCommons ? Hum, maybe, I'll wait a few days...
--Tomates Mozzarella (talk) 02:32, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Ah right that's the problem. You must have your account more than four days then you become the "Autoconfirmed"-flag to reupload pictures. This flag comes automatically after 4 days. Greetings, --Luxo 13:59, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

derivativeFX bug – filename doesn’t display properly in message

Hi Luxo,

Thanks kindly for your fabulous derivativeFX tool – my life is infinitely improved because of it!

I’ve a bug to report:

  • The final “Thank you” message does not display properly if there is a space or & (don’t know which) in the uploaded filename.

Specifically, when uploading

File:Hastings & St Leonards RJD 100 - excerpt.jpg

the message I received was:

Your file Hastings is going to Wikimedia:Commons.

I suspect that this is due to the & (note the trailing space on "Hastings ") – perhaps an easy fix?

Thanks again, and hope this helps!

Rotatebot beschneidet Bilder

Hallo Luxo.
mfg --D-Kuru (talk) 17:10, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

--The Evil IP address (talk) 17:25, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Gruss,--Luxo 20:09, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
OK, gut bei diesen komplizierten Bots weiß man ja nie ;-) Ist jetzt entsprechend verschoben. --The Evil IP address (talk) 20:38, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Loading... please wait

Hallo Luxo,

--Studmult (talk) 08:43, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Luxo,

First: thanks for providing this excellent service. Once in a while I come across a image that needs rotating.

Second: as frequently, one thinks of the first one only when it doesn't work. Possibly this is related to problems with MediaWiki updates from last week. -- User:Docu at 13:29, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Please test it again; I've applied a workaround which fixes Commonist and probably resolves similar issues with other upload tools. --brion (talk)
Luxo would need to look into this. (To use the bot, one just applies Rotate and every 6 hours all images with that template are rotated and the template removed. User:Rotatebot/Log shows the last completed operations.)
Currently, it seems to rotate the same image multiple times as the template isn't removed. -- User:Docu at 06:43, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
sorry, wasn't here this week, next time ask a Admin to block it if he makes such shitty things... It's fixed, he works again. Tank you, --Luxo 21:03, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I watched it for two days and then asked someone to block it, but it didn't seem necessary to them either. It doesn't really matter in which direction the bumper stickers point .. and they were that way for two years ;) -- User:Docu at 21:12, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Please Note: ROTATEBOT is NOT working properly..... almost an entire day has passed since request for photo rotation, yet the photo remains in the WRONG position.

Guest disputant (talk) 18:21, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Luxo seems currently offline (see #Rotatebot above) and it may take some time until the bot will operate again. If it's urgent and as it's your own picture, you could rotate it and re-upload it. -- User:Docu at 18:30, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

My scanner has NOT been working -- and that is why I did not redo the photo scan. In other words, am dependent upon ROTATEBOT to do its magic but looks like it is defective. I suppose I should not be surprised, in all likelihood, the technology behind ROTATEBOT was never perfected, just a case of some tech promoter selling Wikipedia a program that probably never worked properly. I promised various concerned parties that I would rectify this matter but am wasting too much time addressing an issue that I rather doubt will be corrected. It's been my experience that Wikipedia simply ignores complaints when it is not motivated to pay attention to them.

Guest disputant (talk) 20:33, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Two entire days have passed and ROTATEBOT continues to be defective and WikiMedia continues to ignore my request for assistance. I would say my previous point has been validated.

Guest disputant (talk) 18:31, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Ok, appears that ROTATEBOT finally succeeded in rotating the picture. Not sure why it took so long but, in any case, it is done, thanks.

Guest disputant (talk) 20:21, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

...finally it was Common Good who did it, not Rotatebot. He is back again, see #Rotatebot above.. Greetings,--Luxo 21:06, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
ps: the technology behind ROTATEBOT is surely not perfect, but most of time it works. To sell this program to wikimedia is a good idea, after all a nonprofit organization must swim in money... If you like a better feature for rotating, I recommend you to click on this link to open up new vistas with mediawiki. Greetings,--Luxo 19:50, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

The derivative works tool

Hi, I tried to use it, and added 5 original flickr works with the same GFDL license, but it dost work. It asks me to open a php page, which doesnt help. What might be the problem? Thanks. Suede67 (talk) 10:05, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

hmm can you specify which images?--Luxo 16:37, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Sorry for the lateness. I managed to figure out what the problem was, incompatible licenses, i got thme figured, and te tool worked, thank you! Suede67 (talk) 12:01, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I'm trying to use the tool. I have modified file:Hild Bede Boat Club Blade.svg to produce a new blade image. I input (using copy and paste) the original file name and it starts doing its thing asking me to wait. It then sits there for ages until I give up waiting. Help please. Thanks, --Teach46 (talk) 16:09, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

I can't get it to work with IE9 or FireFox. FotoPhest (talk) 23:41, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Can you explain your problem a bit more precise? Which image? Which error?--Luxo 14:16, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

I'm afraid I'm having trouble with derivativeFX as well. Below is a list of the images I am trying to put into the tool's form. It is able to determine the licenses correctly, but after I hit "OK - Next", nothing happens for a long time, then I'm asked to save a PHP file. I'm using Firefox 3.5.4 on Linux. --LarryGilbert (talk) 00:38, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Addendum: I get much the same result with Firefox 3.5.4 in Mac OS X, except that in the end I'm given a blank page with the same PHP file name in the URL. --LarryGilbert (talk) 14:31, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
Hi LarryGilbert, thank you, the problem should be fixed. The problem was that derivativeFX search for each image categorys with commonsense, and commonsense is slow -> php stops the process because of the long time. Greetings,--Luxo 20:08, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Re: Unlinked images

I did the unlinking for purely practical reasons: Links to image description pages aren't useful on the upload forms. The copyright issue isn't something I considered. Given the fact that images used as icons (such as File:Cscr-featured.svg) generally do not link back to the image in usage on WM projects, I think my edits reflect the current conventions. Seems like my edits triggered a discussion over on the VP (and I wasn't informed about it...). I suggest discussion goes there rather than our talk pages.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:39, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Cropbot not working

Hi Luxo, just to inform you that Cropbot appears to be malfunctioning. While it will successfully upload the image and allow for cropping, when the crop preview window opens, nothing is shown, and it errors out if you try to save. It looks like the cropped image isn't be saved internally by the bot, but that's just a guess. I really do love this tool...perhaps my favourite of all toolserver tools. Huntster (t @ c) 22:08, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

hmm here it works. Which image generates the error?--Luxo 22:22, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Specifically, I was trying to crop File:Oasis of the Seas, October 30 2009.jpg using lossless (went ahead and manually cropped it though), but I'll note I've not been able to successfully use the bot in several weeks, with this exact same problem. I'll hit "Ok - crop this file" and it will appear to be processing and then just give up. Huntster (t @ c) 22:31, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Addendum: Appears that it is the lossless function that is messing up. I just tried three different images with lossless, and none worked. Tried the same three images with "crop exactly", and it did seem to work. Huntster (t @ c) 22:35, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Ok, thanks, I've found the bug > https://jira.toolserver.org/browse/TS-379 . If it's done it should work again. Greetings, --Luxo 10:18, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Fantastic, thanks Luxo. Huntster (t @ c) 16:42, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

derivativeFX not working when new image is derived from two images

Twice I had two images that derivativeFX failed to upload. Both times, the images were derived from two separate images (a PNG providing visual information and an SVG providing map data). The last step seemed to work, but the page that should have contained the image didn't exist. The final page simply sent me to Special:Upload rather than the image page. Will (Talk - contribs) 15:05, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

If the last step works, it's irrelevant how many images are provided, the data type too. There is no error message on the Special:Upload form? It could happen if your file is broken, but then you see a error message there. What browser do you use? --Luxo 17:40, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

danke! what is the max filesize rotatebot can handle anyway?
also, a heads up; this cat: Category:One_Hundred_Poets has a number of large files requiring rotation. there are also lower-resolution version of the files which have been rotated, apparently. however, i think it's probably desirable to rotate the higher-quality versions (some of which also should be joined together, to make complete images). the files under 2mb i shall add to rotatebot; the rest i leave to you?
