You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

File:Qualified countires to African Cup of Nations 2012.png[edit]

Hi, This is an article about sport, however we must put the correct political maps, Western Sahara is recognised as a moroccan's territory only by Morocco. It's not recognised by the United Nations or by African Union. Because this reason Morocco is not a member of Africa Union. and because this too, Morocco is banned from All-Africa Games.

Hi,

First : you confused with (FIFA / CAF) and (United Nations / African Union)
Second : Morocco participate in football competitions because no probleme with FIFA and CAF. However, Morocco is Banned from the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa and Supreme Council for Sport in Africa, because this it's not participate in All-Africa Games, reason is because Western Sahara.
Third : The map that u put is not a sport map, it's a political map right ?... so your map is not correct so you must don't put.

First : Try improoving your English
Second : All your affirmations are 100% wrong, morocco isn't banned from any african sport entity
Third : locals football teams in western sahara are considered moroccans and they play in the moroccan football championship
Fourth : Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a political referee

Edit war at maps[edit]

As edit wars to not help anybody (except that we two users being busy reverting each other again and again) please upload other versions of maps of which you know that they will be disputed under a new name and change the file name in the Wikipedia article if you think it is appropriate. If the old version of the map is that "wrong" that it is not useful please nominate it for deletion and it will be deleted if there is community agreement to do so. Note that maps will be regarded as "useful" as long as they are in use usually. Do you see problems with that way?

Another downside if that editwars is that the picture in all Wikipedia articles which use it changes every hour - not really useful. Wikipedia editors should be able to rely on the content from Commons to some extent. That happens if files with edit wars are included in articles: "argh. komplett durcheinander geraten alles. nun die Version ohne Westsahara" (English: argh! everything is completely mixed up here. Now the version without Western Sahara).

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
