First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Kalamazadkhan!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Please take a look at:[edit]

Please take a look at File:Curry Duck from Trinidad and Tobago.JPG which is categorised under Category:Cuisine by country. It seems to be an image of a Marcus Garvey, not of "curry duck". Also, please don't categorise images under "Category:Cuisine by country" but under the country cuisine itself, such as Category:Cuisine of Trinidad and Tobago. As the image File:Divali meal.JPG does not carry any information about 'where it was made, I can't recategorise it in to the correct category. Please do so yourself. - Takeaway (talk) 10:29, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Over-categorisation[edit]

Please carefully read COM:OVERCAT. For instance, if you put a file into Category:Doubles (food), you shouldn't also put it into Category:Street food in Trinidad and Tobago because it will be considered over-categorisation due to the fact that the category for doubles is itself already placed into the streetfood category. Thank you. - Takeaway (talk) 08:13, 16 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you again for all the images of Trinidad and Tobago but please read COM:OVERCAT. If a file is already in a correct subcategory (or subcategories) of Category:Caribbean, it should NOT be also put into Category:Caribbean. For instance, your upload File:Manzanilla Bay, Trinidad - The effects of coastal erosion and flooding.jpg is already in Category:Beaches of Trinidad and Tobago, which is a subcategory of Category:Beaches of the Caribbean, which in turn is a subcategory of Category:Geography of the Caribbean, which itself is a subcategory of Category:Caribbean. COM:OVERCAT states that this file should ONLY be placed into Category:Beaches of Trinidad and Tobago, and NOT into Category:Caribbean. I have removed those files in the meantime. - Takeaway (talk) 22:41, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Buljol[edit]

Moin Kalamazadkhan, how's d scene? ;-)
Do you think you could organize a photo of Buljol for Wikipedia? Not sure if there's food stalls that have it listed, but maybe you know someone who'd prepare it and you could take a photo...? It'S one of the few Trini dishes that don't ahve a photo yet.
Thanks a lot and kind regards, Grueslayer (talk) 20:11, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for the picture, Kalamazadkhan! It's already in the English and German Buljol articles. :) Kind regards, Grueslayer (talk) 06:48, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Breadfruit Oil-Down[edit]

Moin Kalamazadkhan,
another request! :) I've just finished an article on breadfruit oil-down in the German Wikipedia. Once again, no photo available on Commons. :( Do you see the chance to take one?
Kind regards, Grueslayer (talk) 08:17, 2 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
