First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Wikipedia proves to be a shitty place for copyright freaks[edit]

The picture of the arches in Quesada was from the German wikipedia page, the photo from Guardamar was taken with my mobilecam there and then (and you can keep it, i thought i spesifyed that), and the picture of "don carlos" was uploaded wrongly from my phone (i had a simular that I had taken, but mobile phone screens are not very good)and should be deleted.

The fact that I cannot control what I upload myself, is reason enough for me never to contribute in any wiki ever again. It is a silly meaningless system, only constructed to justify the existence of some vague organization, therefore I have decided never to write anything on wiki again.

conclusion: you may consider the picture of the beach in quesada public domain, the same goes for what I have written on no wikipedia about Torrevieja, Rojales and Guardamar del Segura; however I will never again contribute here, as wikipedia seems to serve its own self created feudalism, rather than the interest of promoting common knowledge for free for anyone to use.

Too bad you indicate that you are not willing to make an effort. Your view appears to be a bit disturbed on what the Wikimedia Foundation is trying to achieve. The images mentioned above have not been deleted up to now. Required information can still be added and hints on how to have been added in the messages above. Cheers! I know very well what Wikipedia was an effort to do...[edit]

The fact that I spent my valuable time writing useful information on the Norwegian wikipedia about three municipallies in Spain, and when trying to make things more readable and enjoyable for others by adding some pictures, one owned by me and released to the public domain upon upload, the second already released to the public domain by a German user writing about the same subject in his own language, and a third uploaded by mistake (which I wanted to erase immediately), is the problem.

This is the Internet. If someone has uploaded a picture to it, I am by law allowed to link to that picture. The ultimate responsibility will therefore be to whomever has placed the picture on the Internet in the first place.

The fact that I have to ask permission from some demi-god to remove a picture I have uploaded, is preposterous. Technically that was a violation of copyright laws, and I could have been punished for it, if I did not correct it immediately. Since legality seems to be the issue here, would not wikipedia be responsible for me having continued to violate this.

Personally I believe that Microsoft and the US have violated the copyright laws by not having presented a guideline and standard (like ASCII) for operating systems. Also, MicroSoft has never invented anything themselves, they have only recreated things others had invented before them. This is often the case with American new colonialism (Intellectual property), and I therefore see no need to respect their laws or opinions upon these matters.

I am not going to waste any more time on this. Do whatever you want to do. But be aware that there are complexed moral issues at stake, and I for one, will not take part of this.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
