Consulting the oracle.

Here I am again. :P This time, it's about a file I found whilst categorising the recent batch upload of US Navy images. What are your thoughts quality wise? i thought some of the commons regulars would appreciate a look at what their military counterparts havve to go through to get their shots. Sarcastic ShockwaveLover (talk) 10:05, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Fantastic picture! I'd support it as it is, but I believe you have even better chances if you do a careful denoise first. There are no sharpness problems, my only complaint is the low resolution, but that is easily mitigated. Cheers, JovanCormac 10:35, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

FP promotion

This image has been promoted to Featured picture!

The image File:NASA Mars Rover.jpg, that you nominated on Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:NASA Mars Rover.jpg has been promoted. Thank you for your contribution. If you would like to nominate another image, please do so.

That's the cleanest rover I've ever seen, and so are the rocks! Unfree (talk) 06:32, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

That's because it's a render -- JovanCormac 09:43, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Denoise?

Hi, yesterday I put a photo "Lizard in Ibiza"

to the candidates. You wrote that it needs a denoise. Now I'm very sorry to say that I don't know what that meens and how to do that. I cut and sharpened the picture before with ACDSee, perhaps this was wrong. Should I add the original one? Kind regards, --Schnobby (talk) 10:07, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello! en:Image noise might help you. A good program for denoising is Neat Image. Cheers, JovanCormac 18:37, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
Hi, thank you for your quick reply. I'll try that. Cheers, --Schnobby (talk) 07:39, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
Hello, JovanCormac, you wrote that you liked this photo, which my husband took this year in Shanghai, where we've been to see the total solar eclipse (it rained, however).
I always thought, a good photo is a good photo, but now I see that it is important to add denoise, HDR and other things too. As we are very old (in your eyes, I suppose), it will take some time to learn everything about these techniques. Thanks again for your recent tips, I'll try that as I wrote you. You seem to be a friendly person and I thank you for promising to support, if I do all these image processings, but for the moment I can't. I can make them darker, sharper, smaller... but I promise you, I'll learn it. Regards, --Schnobby (talk) 15:43, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for your kind words. Please note that denoising is not something you "add" in any way, nor is it a technicality. At low lighting levels, most digital cameras produce some kind of image noise (something not found in traditional photography). Image noise, when present in large enough quantities, can significantly affect the beauty of a photograph. In the case of the Shanghai photo, strong image noise is visible in the illuminated areas (the "grain"), and should be reduced digitally to improve appearance. High dynamic range imaging is a technique that allows for a much higher dynamic range than is possible with traditional photography and may even look unnatural. HDR is controversial; I myself don't like it very much, and it certainly isn't neccessary. But noise reduction and perspective correction do matter in my opinion, and should be done when possible. I wish you the very best of luck learning about it. Cheers, JovanCormac 17:03, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Aerobatics

Hello. Perhaps you, as {user en}, will be able to halp me out, because no dictionary was able to. What do you call an aerobatic manoeuvre shown on the following photos: File:Zlin Żelazny Góraszka 2.JPG, File:File-Red Arrows mid-air kiss, Radom 2009 edit.jpg, File:Breitling Jet Team 7.jpg? Is there any name for it at all in English? And if not, how would you call it? I'd like to make a category grouping such pictures. Wolf (talk) 12:25, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I'm really sorry but as you know I've never been to an airshow and do not know a single aerobatic maneuver by name in any language. How I would call it? "Extremely dangerous" comes to mind -- JovanCormac 18:56, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
OK, let me rephrase the question: do you know, by any chance, where to start looking for it or which user to ask or... whatever? :) Wolf (talk) 19:14, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
Well, the only thing that I can think of is the Wikipedia article on aerobatic maneuvers. Not only does it provide links to relevant sites, its history is likely a list of users who are interested and/or knowledgeable in the subject. -- JovanCormac 08:03, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

OK, I think I've got it. It's called head-on pass, and that's wgat I'm going to call the category. Wolf (talk) 22:22, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

About math symbols

Hi, Jovan!
Look, please, this:

Non-typical symbols for russian math high-shool used in this diagram.

Thanks for pointing it out. I also found some symbols unusual and left a comment. Cheers, JovanCormac 07:36, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
