First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

oh oh... How much to keep you quiet? How about if I fix up some of your categorisations??? ++Lar: t/c 11:45, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on those orphan categories and images[edit]

You're really doing great work!

Are you having trouble telling/remembering which images you've already categorised? What if once you catgorised it, you moved it to another category (that still retained that it was related to BetaCommandBot) to show that it's been looked at. If that sounds like it might be helpful I can ask around (or you could)... ++Lar: t/c 20:46, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've answered you there. Thanks for your hard work categorizing images and categories. ++Lar: t/c 14:49, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Edit-countitis[edit]

You may find this interesting... but, (quoting from Kate's tool)

A novice was once curious about the nature of the Edit Count. He approached the Zen master and asked, "Zen master, what is the nature of the Edit Count?"
"The Edit Count is as a road," replied the Zen master. "You must travel the road to reach your destination, and some may travel longer roads than others. But do not judge the person at your door by the length of the road he has travelled to reach you."
And the novice was Enlightened.

a typo?[edit]

Hi... I think Image:Little Pilgram Masthead1866.jpg‎ might be spelt wrong? Easy fix is to reupload with the desired name, copy all of the contents from when you edit the old image over to the infobox... then tag the old image with {{speedy|bad name, has typo, new version at Image:Little Pilgrim Masthead1866.jpg, identical content‎ }} and an admin will delete it. ++Lar: t/c 22:11, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I missed it. (I am very tired today) - Epousesquecido 00:40, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks all sorted now. :) ++Lar: t/c 12:10, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Since you have several Mowatt images now, maybe set up an category:Anna Cora Mowatt category for them? (subcat it in "american playwrights" maybe?) then move the images to that subcat? Or make a bot request :) ++Lar: t/c 15:36, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pics[edit]

Well I am flattered to think that someone finds them of value to the project! I see what you mean about the Dartington Hall article (strangely not on my watchlist) - it reads more like a tourist blurb than something encyclopaedic. I'll certainly take a look but I'm not sure I have any worthwhile reference material on it. Parts of it are very old - that I do know (& the gardens are good too).

You really should work here some more you know. Some great material needing organising so that folk can find it. Galleries to create/improve and some really nice people too! A great antidote to "you know where" :) Thanks & take care --Herby talk thyme 08:59, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New user name[edit]

I have recently requested my user name be changed from Epousesquecido to Josette on all the Wikis where I edit (and a few others that I don't). Also posting here to let Rlevse know. Thank you - Josette (talk) 01:42, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Background image on your user page[edit]

Hi Josette, on your user page you are using File:Biandintz eta zaldiak - modified2.jpg as a background. Please note that this image is licensed under the CC-by-sa 2.0, which requires attribution. As you do not link to the file description page of that image, you do not provide proper attribution to the author of the file. Please change that, e.g. by directly linking to the image or at least mentioning user name and license of the image on your user page. Thanks and best regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 22:38, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How nice of you to point that out to me - I'll take care of it. - Josette (talk) 01:08, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done - Josette (talk) 01:24, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
