I had put "CC & GFDL" in the description text, as is my habit, but I inadvertantly neglected to choose a license tag before hitting upload. This has been fixed. Jonathunder 18:26, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried but couldn't get decent sharpness without introducing too much noise. I like the picture but I think it may fail because of the low detail. If you want to try editing I recommend GIMP, it's free! --Calibas 02:59, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To explain the boilerplate copyvio notice more, you've uploaded a photograph, which you took, that depicts a copyrighted sculpture you did not author. This makes your photo a derivative, which prevents it from being uploaded to Commons unless you can show that the underlying work is in the public domain or that it is freely licensed. Hello, Jonathunder!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

System 3 keypunch[edit]

Thanks for uploading the image File:IBM System3.JPG. The object on the right of the picture is a System 3 keypunch, but it is partially cut off. I wonder if you have any other shots you'd be willing to share that would show the entire keypunch. Best, --agr (talk) 00:33, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:GoodFridayBishop.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

renames[edit]

Please use rename next time and also don't blank pages. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 14:40, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Why did you not wait till an admin moved the file? You now wasted another 3 MB of hard drive space. If a file has an incorrect filename and description you should _not_ upload it again but correct the description and tag the file with rename. That way the history of the file can be retraced. Uploading the file a third time was really idiotic. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 22:12, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Please be civil. The new file is larger, better than the old, and has a correct description. Jonathunder (talk) 22:21, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Look, if you want to upload a bigger version of a file just upload it on top of the old version, so you don't have to create a new filename and fix the links. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 09:07, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

You're now a filemover[edit]

Hi Jonathunder/1, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one.
 • Please do not tag redirects as Speedy. Other projects, like InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
 • For guideline when to rename a file, please see Commons:File renaming and Commons:File naming.

Miller photo copyright[edit]

Hi, Jonathunder on September 12, 2010 you proposed that the, File:JoeMiller.JPG, be deleted and your proposal was not challenged it is a clear copyright violation that I have also notice. However, two months later the photo has not been deleted so I was wondering if you could delete it or help in the deletion process as there are many more photo of Miller from Flickr that are usable. Thanks - Aaaccc (talk) 3 November 2010 (UTC)

It's good to know there may be free alternatives. Could you provide links, so we can look at the licensing?
Someone else made that deletion request. I only commented there; I would invite you to do so as well. Jonathunder (talk) 15:06, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well on the Commons, File:Joe Miller debate 2010.jpg is from Flickr with licensing confirmed here. Also a similar photo from Flickr is upload to the actual Wiki. Thanks, for your help and I will forward the deletion request to a full admin. Thanks - Aaaccc (talk) 4 November 2010 (UTC)
Could you please make links to the files you are talking about? It would make it easier for someone to assist, whether it is me or someone else. Jonathunder (talk) 22:47, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

haggis etc[edit]

hello next time I need to use a open source picture of haggis or other vegetables I will be sure to use your pics because its so much easier to link back to you every time i need a free picture of zucchinis or buildings or whatever else is in wisconsin... god forbid any one should ever use the PD tag because then its just not artsy enough!

You do realize real artists are content to let their work stand for themselves, and don't need constant reassurance and official references? Because really its not about you its about the FREE encyclopedia we are all trying to build. But hey those pics are great (seriously) even if no one will ever use them because of your useless licensing. 66.220.101.210 07:29, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Masking of a pie[edit]

Hello.
Sorry for decline this image, but this "work of art" deserves a nicer picture IMO. It is very possible and easy. This pie is very nice, and IMO better than mine (sharpness, colors etc...)
For all post processing works of my photos, I use GIMP, a FREE software, something like Photoshop. At the beginning, it looks like the instrument panel of a Boeing, but you may find many and many tutorials (even in french!) in video on Youtube or on other web sites, and step by step you may tame the beast. I use it for masking, and there are many technics and tools for doing that. I urge you to download the "Thing", and I'll be very happy if I can help you (despite my very bad english).
Have a nice day (afternoon ? night ? whatever you are in the world), I send you the best wishes from Paris, 01:00 AM tomorrow, if you are in America.--Jebulon (talk) 00:00, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice, and no need to apologize. As a chess master friend taught me, you don't learn from the games you win easily. I did try GIMP, some years ago, but it seemed very difficult to do the simplest thing. With your encouragement, I'll give it another go. Jonathunder (talk) 00:17, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
About GIMP, I have had the same experience, I used it some years ago, and resigned. Now I've re-downloaded it (with some new improvements), and it works good enough to me.--Jebulon (talk) 16:20, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello my friend.
Half an hour at work with GIMP, including uploading in "Commons", and here is the result. Not perfect, but not bad IMO. I hope you'll like ! (no worries if not !) Feel free in use of it, and maybe re-nominate (sure it will pass !!). It is an offering from me as a tribute to the anonymous lady who baked this marvelous "work of art".
Friendly from Paris, --Jebulon (talk) 23:36, 24 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Thanksgiving (absolutely unknown here in Europe...Poor turkeys...) !! The little steam vents (Yes I noticed the pattern): we do so in France too. I made a mistake about the species ID in the description page (we need to be ab-so-lu-te-ly scientific here !). It is not a "tArte" aux pommes (in which you may see the fruits), but a "tOUrte" aux pommes (closed, with the steam vents). A bientôt !--Jebulon (talk) 09:33, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Use your images in a photography book on Winona?[edit]

Hi I want to be sure to invite you personally to submit photos for the book that Chris Livingston at the local independent bookstore, The Book Shelf, is planning to publish on Winona, Minnesota, and its surroundings. We are still in the process of gathering shots. And I'd love to include yours.

We will use photography from the area in and around Winona. You name it: flowers, fish, furry critters, boats, and buildings.

I'm attaching Chris's rationale for the project along with the submission information. Your photos would be a terrific contribution to the support of an organization that does much for the Winona community.

Please feel free to forward this invite to other photographers you think would be interested in helping.

Thanks! Steve Nagel stevenagel@gmail.com

Announcing Our Publishing Initiative: Book Shelf Editions

Since our store’s delightful “marriage” with The Blue Heron two years ago, The Book Shelf has many more Winona visitors coming into the store. Several times a week these folks ask for a gift book with photographs of Winona. Winona organizations and businesses, too, are looking for gifts to give visiting dignitaries and to bring with them as gifts when they go abroad.

So over these last two years I have assessed publishing as a complementary, even necessary, activity for The Book Shelf. And, with considerable assistance and guidance from friends with publishing experience, I have decided on a trial effort at community-based publishing, adopting the publishing imprint “Book Shelf Editions.” The mission of this publishing entity will be to publish quality books of specific interest to Winona and southeast Minnesota, titles that will be available in our store and through regional vendors and organizations.

Winona: Minnesota on the Mississippi, our first title, will be a 96 page, full color photography book. This is exactly the publication my store has needed these past years. It will be a perfect souvenir of a trip to our region. We believe that visitors and residents alike will find value in this edition.

Photographs for the book will be acquired through an open call to the public as well as by direct request. Submissions, as digital files on CD, should be made no later than November 30, 2010, to The Book Shelf. All images that make the book will receive artistic credit. Please read through the details of submission on our website to learn more about organizing and titling your submitted photos.

We plan to publish Winona: Minnesota on the Mississippi in a paperback edition. To accomplish this and to initiate our publishing plan, we need to secure working capital. (Just to say: The purpose of this publishing venture must be to support, not tax, our store financially.) So we will first publish a hardcover, gift edition of the title that will sell for $35. Sales of the first 500 copies of this edition in advance will pay for its publication. The sale of the remaining copies of the first printing will finance the paperback, commercial edition.

We invite members and friends of the Winona community to pledge to purchase copies of the hardcover edition in advance by signing a pledge card at The Book Shelf. Individuals, organizations, or businesses that commit to ten or more copies will receive recognition in the book. Purchasers of fifty or more copies will be acknowledged on the book’s title page.

Thank you for considering this proposal. I hope I have been clear about my purposes: Not only can publishing these books satisfy a demand in Winona, but it can help secure The Book Shelf’s future.

Chris Livingston, The Book Shelf, 162 West 2nd Street, Winona, MN 55987, 507.474.1880 www.bookshelfwinona.com

Submissions

For our inaugural publication, Book Shelf Editions is placing a public open call for photographs of Winona and its surrounding environs. Whether you are a professional, amateur, or even recreational photographer, you can have your work published inWinona: Minnesota on the Mississippi. We are looking for images of landmarks, architecture, and the environment of Winona captured in all four seasons. From Sugarloaf to the Interstate Bridge, from Lake Winona to Garvin Heights, from Latsch Island to Homer, and the Lamberton Home to the Penguin Zesto, we need them all. All photos that make the final publication will receive artistic credit. To submit your photographs:

1. Please submit your photographs in digital JPEG format, on CD, to The Book Shelf by November 30th, 2010. Please use the following naming convention for all photos submitted: Lastname_Firstname_Number_Keyword.JPEG (for example Smith_John_0001_Courthouse.JPEG).

2. Your submissions must be accompanied by a signed Artistic Agreement, which is downloadable using the link below. Copies of the agreement may also be picked up at The Book Shelf.

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Falco sparverius cinnamonimus.jpg[edit]

If the tail is so important, I accept constructive criticism. I have another version with the tail more visible. What do you think?.

On the other hand, I have not seen a better picture of a hawk on Wikipedia.

Greetings --fedaro (talk) 22:08, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can see now why you cropped it that way. Even without the full tail--which is unfortunate--it is a good photo. I think it could be approved as a valued image of Falco sparverius cinnamonimus, and perhaps a quality image as well. Jonathunder (talk) 22:23, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comments The walls are not completely straight, it can be a little disortion but also that the house is old? The composition is very good, maybe it would have been even better image with a more dramatic sky. Is it possible to increase the contrast a little?--Ankara 21:28, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting Permission to Use Image File[edit]

Good Afternoon,

I work for a 501 C(3) non-profit organization called PAC (Play Place for Autistic Children) we've recently shot a two minute introductory video about the organization for our facebook page. One of the people that the President mentions in the video other than her son who is affected by autism is Temple Grandin which is someone she respects and admires. I was wondering if I could use this image that you have of Dr. Grandin to show people who she is, underneath the image I would include a link to the wikipedia page which is linked to the image you've provided them. I just wanted to double check with you to make sure it was okay to use this image to avoid any legal action being taken against us.

Best Regards.

APritchett

You are certainly free to do so. The image is here if you'd like to link it directly. If you have any questions, please let me know. Jonathunder (talk) 00:25, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
