Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Wiki Loves Food (WLF) is a public photo competition organized by Wikimedia India Chapter on Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation. The goal of this project is to improve the quality of pictures of different cuisines of India & the world.

Similarly for Phase II, The submission starts after 00.00 IST on 1st May 2015 and ends at 11.59 IST on 1ST June 2015.

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. Code issues in User:Jnanaranjan sahu/common.js

Hi Jnanaranjan sahu, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

1. You edited User:Jnanaranjan sahu/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.

Multilingual captions beta testing

The Structured Data on Commons team has begun beta testing of the first feature, multilingual file captions, and all community members are invited to test it out. Captions is based on designs discussed with the community[1][2] and the team is looking forward to hearing about testing. If all goes well during testing, captions will be turned on for Commons around the second week of January, 2019.

Multilingual captions are plain text fields that provide brief, easily translatable details of a file in a way that is easy to create, edit, and curate. Captions are added during the upload process using the UploadWizard, or they can be added directly on any file page on Commons. Adding captions in multiple languages is a simple process that requires only a few steps.

The details:

• There is a help page available on how to use multilingual file captions.
• Testing will take place on Beta Commons. If you don’t yet have an account set up there, you’ll need one.
• Beta Commons is a testbed, and not configured exactly like the real Commons site, so expect to see some discrepancies with user interface (UI) elements like search.
• Structured Data introduces the potential for many important page changes to happen at once, which could flood the recent changes list. Because of this, Enhanced Recent Changes is enabled as it currently is at Commons, but with some UI changes.
• Feedback and commentary on the file caption functionality are welcome and encouraged on the discussion page for this post.
• Some testing has already taken place and the team are aware of some issues. A list of known issues can be seen below.
• If you discover a bug/issue that is not covered in the known issues, please file a ticket on Phabricator and tag it with the “Multimedia” tag. Use this link to file a new task already tagged with "Multimedia."

Known issues:

• Search is not currently working on Beta Commons. Search is not needed for testing captions, but service should be restored soon.
• Language name display inconsistencies in multilingual file captions
• Language names for multilingual File captions can run into the caption value in the mobile view
• Deleting a caption field that has text that exceeds the limit does not re-enable the "publish" button
• "Edit" tab for past revisions should be "restore"
• When using the back button, recently added captions sometimes don't display in Chrome
• File Captions can't be edited on mobile browsers
• Wrong font weight for some language labels on SDC captions box

Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)

Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...

Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 November or Thursday, 10 November 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:

1. Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
2. Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
3. Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.

Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.

Structured Data - development update, March 2019

A development update for the current work by the Structured Data on Commons team:

After the release of multilingual file captions, work began on getting depicts and other statements ready for release. These were originally scheduled for release in February and into March, however there are currently two major blockers to finishing this work (T215642, T217157). We will know more next week about when depicts and statements can likely be ready for testing and then release; until then I've tentatively updated the release schedule.

Once the depicts feature is ready for testing, it will take place in two stages on TestCommons. The first is checking the very basics; is the design comfortable, how does the simple workflow of adding/editing/removing statements work, and building up help and process pages from there. The second part is a more detailed test of depicts and other statements, checking the edge-case examples of using the features, bugs that did not come up during simple testing, etc. Additionally we'll be looking with the community for bugs in interaction with bots, gadgets, and other scripts once the features are live on Commons. Please let me know if you're interesting in helping test and fix these bugs if they show up upon release, it is really hard to find them in a test environment or, in some cases, bugs won't show up in a testing environment at all.

One new thing is definitely coming within the next few weeks, pending testing: the ability to search for captions. This is done using the inlabel keyword in search strings, and will be the first step in helping users find content that is specifically structured data. I'll post a notice when that feature is live and ready for use.

Structured Data - early depicts testing

The Structured Data on Commons development team has the very basic version of depicts statements available for early testing on Test-Commons. You can add very basic depicts statements to the file page by going into the new “Structured Data” tab located below the "Open in Media Viewer button." You can use the Latest Files link in the left side nav bar to select existing images, or use the UploadWizard to upload new ones to test with (although those images won’t actually show up on the site). The test site is not a fully functional replica of Commons, so there may be some overall problems in using the site, but you should be able to get a general idea of what using the feature is like.

Early next week I will call for broad, community-wide testing of the feature similar to what we did for Captions, with instructions for testing, known bugs, and a dedicated space to discuss the feature as well as a simple help page for using statements. Until then, you're welcome to post on the SDC talk page with what you might find while testing depicts.

Structured Data - computer-aided tagging

The development team is starting work on one of the last planned features for SDC v1.0, a lightweight tool to suggest depicts tags for images. I've published a project page for it, please have a look. I plan to share this page with everyone on Commons much more broadly in the coming days. The tool has been carefully designed to try to not increase any workload on Commons volunteers; for starters, it will be opt-in for auto-confirmed users only and will not generate any sort of backlog here on Commons. Additionally, the tool is highly privacy-minded for the contributors and publicly-minded for the third party being used, in this case Google. The implementation and usage notes contain more information about these and other potential concerns as a starting place. It's really important that the tool is implemented properly from the start, so feedback is welcome. Questions, comments, concerns are welcome on the talk page and I will get answers as quickly as possible as things come up. FoP deletions

• Jnanaranjan, I'm sorry that you've encountered A1Cafel here and that they have been seeking to have your uploads deleted. If they have also been threatening you with blocking, then please raise that through COM:AN/U. They've done that so much in the past that there is a specific restriction in place [3] on them to stop them threatening people like that.

A1Cafel enjoys getting things deleted, so most of their edits here are to do that. Oddly they also like to bulk upload images with just the same problems. But 'deleting stuff' is seen as a good thing on Commons, so they're allowed to keep on doing it: Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#Subject: Request for Permanent Block of A1Cafel.

Some of the problem here is that A1Cafel does not understand copyright or FOP, but they keep claiming that they do when using it as a deletion reason. Now these topics are complicated and it's fair to say that nearly all new editors coming here won't understand them (Commons is one of the few places on the web that does care). For that reason we need to be patient in explaining them and generous to editors who have inadvertently breached them. Certainly A1Cafel's attitude of "Can I get to block someone now?" is inexcusable.

To explain (sorry for being long-winded, but I'm trying to be complete): All things here need to be freely licensed. Please read COM:L, but even that doesn't adequately explain the limits of free licensing. There are images that are usable on Wikipedia but are not acceptable for Commons, because they're not free enough (so please put them on Wikipedia). Commons doesn't have the same goal as Wikipedia: Commons prioritises free reusability over knowledge, Wikipedia is the other way round. So things to go on Commons need to be really free, so that anyone can re-use them in the future.

To be free, an image mustn't be encumbered at either of two levels. The photograph itself is probably the copyright of a recent photographer, like yourself, but we encourage such photographers to license it freely through Creative Commons (it's still in copyright, but we now have clear permission). Also the subject of a photograph needs to be free. A photo of a tree or a mountain is fine, but one of an artistic or creative work can be a problem. There is copyright on paintings, sculptures, architectural buildings. This lasts (in most countries) for some decades after the death of the artist. So a photo of an old statue is OK, but a new building might not be. Although some buildings are so crude that it's arguable they don't have any copyright attached to them. This is often an issue for a sign. Is it just brief text? (not protected) or is it a complex graphic work (protected) ? To simplify this, many countries have 'Freedom of Panorama' which says that if you put your copyrighted work out in a public space, where members of the public can see it and photograph it, from public spaces, then you can't expect to still restrict its copyright. This gets very complicated, and it varies by country. Some famous examples (the Eiffel Tower is out of copyright but its lighting at night is still protected) are very obscure. A1Cafel likes deleting things and has posted many deletion requests that misrepresent FoP in order to delete more stuff.

In brief, FoP allows you to photograph copyrighted subjects in public places, without being subject to that copyright. It isn't available in South Africa.

But, which A1Cafel regularly ignores, you don't need FoP to photograph something that doesn't have a copyright anyway. If a subject is now public domain because of age, or it never had a copyright applied to it, it doesn't matter if there's no FoP.

Now for these, Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Jan Smuts Statue in Company Gardens, A1Cafel is probably right. The statue will remain in copyright until 2043, so we can't use it. See Category:Statue of the Little Mermaid (Copenhagen) for a similar example until 2030.

Looking at the museum overall, we see photos like this File:SA National Gallery - panoramio.jpg where there's a sculpture just visible in the centre. However in this case we could claim de minimis as an excuse (rather than FoP). This is a photo of the museum rather than the sculpture, the sculpture appears, but is incidental. This is another topic that A1Cafel does not understand.

There are many photos on Commons that should be deleted, many for these reasons, probably some of them are yours. But please don't take it to heart – there are many good photos that can't be used on Commons, because of the way Commons is purposed. That's no reflection on the photographer or uploading editor. We have a big problem here where some editors and admins have no respect for photographers, they see them merely as obstacles to the great purpose of getting as many things deleted as possible.

Hey @Andy Dingley Thank you for your concerns. This is the incident so far.

1. A1Cafel tagged some of my images for deletion and I think that is valid.
2. Another user Jeff G has warned me of getting blocked for my uploads of copyvio. The message said that it was my final warning before getting blocked.
3. I have raised concern regarding the this on commons help page, one admin talk page and the user's talk page. My concern was not about the delete request but regarding warning and any action that is needed by me for my past uploads.
4. On all replies I just got message regarding the FOP and that I should be careful about the uploads. On one reply Jeff written that "should have used {{Fcs}} before {{End of copyvios}} because you did not have a recent enough {{Copyvionote}}".
5. I got panicked because of the block warning and added delete tags to many of my uploads of which some may have no issue with copyvio. Like this. I have withdrawn deletion request from many DRs I have made in panic.
6. The admin I have contacted has removed the blocking message from my talk page.
7. I also wanted to be sure about my past uploads and proper action I should take so started discussion on A1Cafel's talk page where you also had your inputs. I wanted to get educated or may be reviewed by someone so that I will add delete tag to my own photos and don't face the warning in future, but to be honest I felt like got very generic reply. I expected some more knowledgeable suggestion from someone who is curating images. But that is not a concern and I reviewed my own uploads.
