File:HIP 13044 b.jpg[edit]

Hi, I saw that you added File:HIP 13044 b.jpg. Looks good, and I used it in the page I built for en:HIP 13044 b. Now, do you think the Telescope picture is also ok to download given that you seem to know the licensing rules? I also built a page for that en:MPG/ESO telescope and the picture will look good there too. Cheers. History2007 (talk) 23:13, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent, you might find different formats for MPG/ESO 2.2-m on line. --Jmencisom (talk) 12:04, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can certainly try to download that, but I just need a "yes" from someone that the licensing is ok, and that it can be downloaded. Do you think it is ok? History2007 (talk) 05:10, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please go ahead. Just make sure to use Eso in the Permission field and Attribution 3.0 in the Licensing field. --Jmencisom (talk) 12:44, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jmencisom!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Photo usage[edit]

Hello :-)

I just wanted to say "Thank you very much" for your picture: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_Slice_of_the_Sky.jpg

My name is Daniel, i used that picture in my little "travel around the world" puzzle game for android.

When a player sees your image (when completing a level) there is a short sentence describing the location visible on your panorama and also you are credited directly as "Photographer". Hopefully you are fine with that, if you want any changes please contact me directly. :-)

2012-08-08 User Sirleto / Wikipedia User:SirLeto

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for using one of our images on your game. Could you please use the full credit: ESO/G.Hüdepohl (atacamaphoto.com)? For more information visit Usage of images, videos and web texts. Let us know when you're done, perhaps we can promote your game our social channels.
Great! Thanks for reminding me about the full credit. chances are it's to long and might not fuly show up on (smaller) phones (somewhere cut of in between the domain name). i have to check that - if i forget and you find it in a future version, please just tell me again :-) the next version of the game will be released in september (i hope ;). thanks! --Daniel/Sirleto

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

I think the HP2116B picture you uploaded is actually a HP2000F timesharing machine[edit]

Hi, I am new to some of this wiki stuff. I looked at the HP2116 picture that you grabbed from ESO. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ESO_Hewlett_Packard_2116_minicomputer.jpg) That machine is not a 2116A/B it appears to be a HP 2000F. (http://www.hpmuseum.net/display_item.php?hw=411), or it could be a 2100A (http://hpmuseum.net/display_item.php?hw=98). ESO mislabeled the image themselves too.

I have done very little wiki editing so I just updated the text connected to the picture, but the title of the picture is still incorrect. The 2000F does share the 2116B architecture though, so it is not far off. I'll let you decide if there is anything else to be done.

Thanks for uploading the picture. I had fun chasing links and figuring out what it really was. Cheers, Kevin Szabo

Thanks for uploading File:Logo Codaltec.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. However, the license states: "This license does not apply if ESA material created after 2008 or source material from other organizations is in use." Hubble and ESO images[edit]

Hi Jmencisom, got a question for you. I see you've been uploading images from Spacetelescope and from ESO, which is great, but why do you only upload the smallest "Screensize JPEG" versions? I would ask that you use the native resolution "Large JPEG" files, so others don't need to go behind you and upload the full resolution versions, which is what Commons always prefers. Please let me know if you have any questions or thoughts on the matter. Huntster (t @ c) 03:46, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I'll do it. Thank you for the remainder. --Jmencisom (talk) 14:07, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there. I've asked before (directly above, actually) to please upload full resolution images from these sites, but you continue to only upload Screensize versions. Please, why are you doing this? It only makes more work for other editors here, and many end users may never realise that higher resolution material is available. Huntster (t @ c) 00:28, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Identifying unnamed galaxies[edit]

Thank you for your beautiful uploads of space. I don't know if you can help me, but I have been fascinated by File:QSO B0957+0561.jpg for quite some time and want to know if there is a name for the spiral galaxy seen face-on in the upper right quadrant, at about a 45° angle from the double quasar in the center. I've been on different sites that browse the universe, but I haven't been able to find the object on any of them ... I guess the sharp resolution we have in that picture only appears in still photos? Anyway, I'm just curious if there's a way to look up the name of an item in space based on its coordinates, even if that name is something uninteresting like POTW1403A-17N49E. Thank you for all your hard work, Soap (talk) 16:40, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Soap: randomly saw this question on my watchlist. The galaxy in question is referred to as ASV 3 in SIMBAD. Very little information associated with it. Huntster (t @ c) 18:33, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. Though I think I see now that you gave me the name for the smaller, brighter object near the corner, when I wanted the pinwheely one that's about 2/3 of the way from left to right and 1/4 of the way from top to bottom on that image. Browsing around Aladin suggests it may not have a name at all ... it's near YGKOW 53 but it seems YGKOW 53 is an object behind this galaxy, not the galaxy itself. I've learned a lot, though ... thank you for your help. Soap (talk) 04:20, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Soap, my apologies, totally misunderstood what you were referring to. Yeah, I concur that it appears that particular galaxy doesn't have a designation. YGKOW 53 is probably very separate, but USNO-A2 1425-07426810 likely refers to...a star? or perhaps the supergiant black hole?... at the center of that galaxy.
