Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear Jlvsclrk,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

Categories[edit]

Hey, try to categorize your images a bit more specifically and, ideally, in multiple categories. Category:Horse racing is a "diffusing" category, in that everything in that category should just be another category. It takes a while to learn what some of the categories are (particularly as many of the horse categories were first created by German, not English, native speakers!) and also how to activate the preferences that allow you to get suggested categories to propagate and other cool gadgets that speed up things, but see what I've been doing with your stuff and maybe figure it out from there. LOVE the images! Montanabw (talk) 03:48, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Preakness - Secretariat.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

I think I simplified things[edit]

I created categories for each Breeders' Cup year and moved all the images that had obvious dates (other than photos of stuff like the grounds, that do not change much) to the category for their year. I also added the location of the Races that year to the category, so now you can put an image just in "Breeders' Cup 2016" (don't forget capital letters and the apostrophe) and it will automatically be in a subcat of both Breeders' Cup and Santa Anita Park. This also should make it easier to find new images or images of specific horses if it's known when they ran. Where we can name specific individuals, we probably should create categories for them by name where possible. Montanabw (talk) 06:08, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Brilliant! Thanks. Categories are such an important organizational tool but I suck at using them. Going to work on pics for an hour or so, then its off to the airport from home. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jlvsclrk (talk • contribs) 15:18, 06 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just amazed that you stopped to upload images during your trip! That's dedication! Montanabw (talk) 19:18, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Crops?[edit]

Would it be possible for you to do a slightly tighter crop of the Irish War Cry photo and re-upload that version? The horse looks small at the thumbnail size in the articles and most of the content on the edges is just random people. Actually, this is true of some of the others as well. I could do it, but then I'd have to re-upload as a new image, which would be unnecessarily duplicative. I'm thrilled that you got this photos, though, so not intending to be too critical! Just WOW! You got them! Montanabw (talk) 20:54, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That was a nice crop, thanks. Now, Um... maybe the one of Girvin too? (humbly making an appeal)? Montanabw (talk) 00:06, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I cropped Girvin in the walking ring. In the winner's circle, I know two people at the head of the horse are owners, not sure about the lady in the dress walking towards camera - I could crop her out if you like. Jlvsclrk (talk) 00:38, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not a big deal, more all the people behind the Sharp family, unless there is some reason for them to be there... maybe this one would be a candidate for a separate upload of various crops. Not a huge issue, I moved around the images in the article. Montanabw (talk) 00:48, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I cropped the original then uploaded another couple of pics that show Grady leading the horse into the winner's circle with Sharp and Rosie celebrating in the background. Weird lighting though because of the shadow from the grandstand. Jlvsclrk (talk) 01:55, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You rock! Montanabw (talk) 03:47, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr2Commons[edit]

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first"). Elisfkc (talk) 03:01, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, anything to make it easier. Jlvsclrk (talk) 22:03, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

CropTool[edit]

In the future, I would appreciate it if you used CropTool to crop images. This tool allows users to crop images already on Commons without having to download the images. It also makes sure that, if necessary, the file has already passed license review. It also properly links the images to one another, in case an issue with them comes up later. Elisfkc (talk) 03:04, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome, thanks. Jlvsclrk (talk) 22:29, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open![edit]

Dear Jlvsclrk,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.

In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.

Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:04, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
