Please categorize your images.[edit]

Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries) or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 08:50, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have tagged this photo as a copyright violation since the copyright owner do not allow unrestricted commercial use. Please take contact with the Gemini observatory to ask for permission for unrestricted use by anybody. Otherwise this photo may have to be deleted.

Please also go through your other astronomical photos to make sure that you have the necessary permissions. Regards, Thuresson 12:42, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfree media disallowed at Commons[edit]

Thank you very much. When accessing images for an article located on a different server, are there distinguishing factors? E.g. when I used the images I uploaded to the Commons on the pages I was creating I merely listed the filename into a template--if this image were uploaded on wikipedia, would the procedure be the same? Timothyarnold85 03:53, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, is there a way to move the images I mistakedly placed on Commons to Wikipedia? Timothyarnold85 03:56, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help![edit]

Hi Jkelly, thanks for your help in weeding copyvios out of the Commons! I noticed you tagged Image:1freud-anna.jpg as a {{Copyvio}}. I consider that this tag is more for very obvious or direct copyright violations, where you can point to where it's been copied from or it's something very modern and not likely to have expired copyright. "copyvio" is a speedy deletion tag, which should mean it's not necessary to discuss or consider it - it should be completely obvious. Since this is not completely obviously to me, I've change it to {{Delete}} which is a regular deletion request, and added it to Commons:Deletion requests. You're welcome to make further comment on it there. Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:32, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maritime command[edit]

Consider the category listing in "Naval ships by country.

In all cases, you can identify the country concerned. Maritime command is the accurate title, but very few people outside canada will know what that term means. I admit I had no great solution to the question. I categorized 3 dozen HMCS ships as Maritime Command, but as I looked at the resulting pages, I noted the problem again that few people will know what maritime command is without further explanation. Perhaps I should transclude a short descriptive note about what Maritime command means? That will cover the problem from image and Maritime command cat pages, but I am at a loss what to do with Naval ships by country- Maritime Command it is mystifying which country this subcat corresponds to.

I admit my solution was clumsy, but I didn't want to rename the category to something like Maritime Command (Navy of Canada) or some such without discussing it with interested parties.

Your solution? Maybe Josh has an opinion on this. He is a big advocate about rationalizing the naming of these naval categories. I really don't care what it is just so that everyone knows what the naming standard is. -Mak 16:28, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, there are not always admins easily available unfortunately. I was rather thinking that a block might be useful in limiting the amount of cleaning up we have to do after them. :) If they upload anything more now, let me know, and I will block them if someone else doesn't. Thanks for your help! pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:49, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for your message. I do not remember exactly where I got this picture from - I do remember that the source identified it as an anonymous painting that probably dated to the late 19th or early 20th century, which is why I felt safe uploading it to Commons, but that source is proving difficult to track down again. I'll try to do some more digging to get more exact information, but I'm not very sure if I'll manage in the next seven days. -- Arvind 09:58, 29 June 2006

I've added a note to the image page explaining that the artist is unknown, but that the painting dates to the late 19th or early 20th century - is that sufficient to save the image? -- Arvind 10:05, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Celtic[edit]

I put an exception marker in the affected cats as a safety measure- I am still harvesting adjectival names so without this marker it could be inadvertently added again. The marker has no display and will be eliminated when the switchover is complete. Regards -Mak 21:15, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Guys. The Canadian Government's Library and Archives site states:[1]
  • USE/REPRODUCTION:
    • Restrictions on use/reproduction: Nil
    • Copyright: Expired
    • Credit: Library and Archives Canada / PA-114781
What are you doing- are you saying that when the Canadian government asserts that the copyright is expired that you think they are wrong? Are you saying that you know copyright rules better than the Library and Archives folks do?

This is PD, because an official agency of the Canadian Government says it is. At the very least, you must admit that this makes it PD in Canada. -Mak 10:21, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Right, which means that if the creator is not a Canadian, they couldn't exert copyright in Canada, but could in the United States, where our servers are. That's the concern. Jkelly 17:16, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. But what about Bernes's rule of shortest... on second thought, I think I will just shut up. We have at least some of the major fascists due to the availability through Luce- the Italian propaganda agency. -Mak 19:59, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re:your query on vocalists

Yes I can do the vocalists switch as part of this. Just to be clear, all members of vocalists by country will be mapped to vocalists from [countryname], regardless if they formerly said singers. EG Category:French singers will get changed to Category:Vocalists from France.
If that's wrong, drop a line- otherwise, that is the way it will happen. -Mak

Image deletion warning Image:Goering, Mussolini, Hitler, Hess.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

thermographic images copyleft[edit]

Hello Jkelly,

Don't worry, I didn't put the images on the pages yet. I did upload a few thermograpics in Commons, are they alright like this? I made a page on nutscode.com / view images / wikipedia. It shows the tumbnails of a special wiki-selection in purple/yellow, including temperature data (this combination makes them more or less unique). Ofcourse they look a bit like other images on the site, but strickt technically they are unique. With a copyleft remark. If you are OK, I'll put them on the relevant pages. I think the best place is in the area about thermoregulation, coldblooded, warmblooded, pages like that, and sometimes the pages of the specific animal, like the bat, tarantula or vulture.

Greetings,

Arno

thermal images[edit]

Hi Jkelly,

I added the direct links and tried to put them all in the categorie Thermal images, to me it's not very intutive, so I hope it's OK like this. I put some images in the biology portal.

Greetings,

Arno

Welcome[edit]

Thanks for the welcome! It's good to see some familiar faces on Commons (well... not faces exactly)! I have been contributing for almost a year though - still, there's some good links in the welcomebox I hadn't been aware of. And thanks for your comments on the VP. I saw them at work today but editing at work would be dangerous for me, so I'll go take a closer look now. Tuf-Kat 01:27, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Hitler giving a speech National Film Board.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. categories redirect, how?[edit]

have been adding a few category names lately, and wondering whether we should be rather 'firm' or rather 'democratic' at reorganizing categories. Looking at:

question: is there a preference for the rather 'drastic' or rather 'democratic' approach - which one should be used?

Redner2 18:04, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As a rule of thumb, "articles" (image gallery pages) get a hard redirect, like Bird does. Categories need a soft redirect (like {{Categoryredirect}} gives), because we don't want to lose media that has been put into a category that no one will ever see because of a hard redirect. I hope this makes sense. Jkelly 19:54, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I had two reasons to revert your addition of Category:Nature in Canada to this category:

  1. Agriculture is a human activity, like hunting or fishing. I usually categorize it in Economy, as I do for other economic activities.
  2. I am moving the categories Nature in COUNTRY to Nature of COUNTRY.

I think that agriculture has no connection with nature, so it is a bad idea to put it in a nature category. I have not a such cut -and-dry position for zoos, gardens and parks. See the Ayacop answer on my talk page. --Juiced lemon 18:20, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
could you please have a look at Image:James Marsters.jpg? The licence-tag seems wrong, and the OTRS-stuff was not written by someone with access but the uploader himself, so I'm not too sure whether it can be used or not. And I also would be very thankful if you could have a look for the permission-mail for Image:Nakedraygun4.jpg which I sent on July 25th, 2006 (if that information's too vague to find it without problems I could also forward it again). OTRS question[edit]

Hi. I was asked by a user on Wikipedia about a couple of Scouting images - Image:Resica Falls 1980 camp patch.png and Image:Resica Falls 1971 camp patch.png. They are scans of Boy Scout patches and presumably copyrighted by whatever council owns the camp. The description pages say that there is permission to use them in the OTRS system. Can you check and see who it was that granted the permission? If it was merely granted by the owner of the website it came from, it's still a non-free image. (On the other hand, if the Scout Council granted released the images into the public domain, they would be fine.) Thanks. --BigDT 01:08, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Blanking[edit]

Yes, I get it - I'm sorry, I didn't realise this was against policy, I'll stop redirecting pages to categories. My thinking was that categories (e.g. Category:Rock bands) contain a lot of diverse images, and although people might want to just find pictures of a rock band, they're more likely to want pictures of a specific band for an article, so linking into a category seemed like the best way to help them find images
(Also, when adding images, it's easier to just add "Category:..." instead of needing to add the image onto a page as well).

But, like I said, I won't anymore; I'll revert what I already did. Thanks - Responsible? 18:32, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS Permission[edit]

Hey,

I was wondering why you reverted your addition of an OTRS permission to an image here. Was the permission not a valid one or something or did you just do it by accident?

Thanks, Yonatanh 19:33, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see. I agree with you, I don't think that if you request the user to release the picture under the GFDL so we can use it on Wikipedia and he says, "Sure, you can use it on wikipedia." it is a valid release of the picture(s) under the free license. Yonatanh 19:48, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr verification[edit]

Hello, I noticed you just confirmed the license of a Flickr picture I uploaded. Can you do me a favor and also confirm Image:Milwaukee Art Museum 1 (Mulad).jpg? The picture is currently a Featured Picture Candidate at en.wiki. Thanks! trialsanderrors 08:53, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:G8 2006 leaders 3.jpg and G8 2006 leaders 2.jpg I'm sorry but i havent heard the word derivative before and can't see why that license wouldn't work --Ssolbergj 23:15, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

G8 photos[edit]

According to this page, "You may view the photos on the web site and download any of them free of charge in high resolution. Published photos must include a reference to http://www.g8russia.ru/." Also, this website seems to be managed by the Kremlin, whose website allows free reproduction of all materials without permission. I would suspect that the same (or similar) usage restrictions apply to the G8 website as well, which is reflected in the link above. --Tom (talk - email) 23:31, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination for adminship?[edit]

I would like to nominate you for adminship. I think that you have demonstrated commitment both to the project and to our core values. Please let me know if you would accept such a nomination. Jkelly 18:55, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, thanks a lot for the thrust you put on me.
I avoid taking part in the Commons community. It's simply not the same as the en.wiki community. Once, a commons editor used words towards me that I'm sure would be considered Personal Attacks and Assuming bad faith in en.wiki. I reported him to AN/I and all I got was some jokes being made about me. Some few days later, this editor, that was already an admin, became a bureaucrat.
I don't have the guts for taking part in community work here. It seems we can't expect the same kind of mutual respect we're used to see on en.wiki. I still upload images, organize some info, but I avoid the Commons namespace as hell.
Thanks agains for the thrust. --Abu badali 16:00, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dates[edit]

Ok, I know that. Thanks for the tip anyway, but why are you telling me that, did I do something "wrong"? hehehe Dantadd 18:19, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh...now I see...but the preferences only affect the date logs and not the dates on plain text. Am I wrong? Dantadd 18:21, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I personally don't like and I will not use it, but I'm not gonna change when other use it. Dantadd 18:31, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

confirmation of permission request[edit]

Hello JKelly, Can you please confirm the photographer has given permission for free use of this photo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:2004-tsunami.jpg in printed publications? Should I credit him? Thanks, Bob

We do have a release into the public domain, but it would be courteous to credit the photographer. Jkelly 05:08, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance[edit]

When you get a chance, can you take a glimpse at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Acdclineup1994-now.jpg? I think your input would be helpful due to the fact you had deleted an image before as a copyvio that I think is the same as this one. Thanks! Moeron 03:50, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
